I have so many seeds to start and not enough hours in a damned day these past couple of week.

I'm not gonna complain about having too much paid work, but the URGENT ITEMS list is making it a challenging to get to the IMPORTANT ITEMS list.

I could use fewer things running around on fire right now.

I've got some interesting experiments to do wrt starts, and some really cool tomatoes I want to try this year, and I'd really like to get them started. I keep telling myself that, "maybe I could take an hour and start with the seedlings," but this ABSOLUTELY not a one hour task.

We are currently compiling a comprehensive list of what we do, both for the granting process and our site. Inl would say 75% of what we do is effectively invisible.

At Protests

• Quick KYR Training;
• Watch and document cops' behaviour;
• Arrange for legal support if there are arrests.

At Police Stations

• Arrest/Jail support (function as the point of contact between legal team and those awaiting for arrestees to be released);
• Accompany people when they need to get fingerprints and photos taken, or to do turn-ins.
• Accompany people when they have to file a report.

In Court

We attend court or just accompany people to the courthouse, typically during the self-rep stages, to help manage expectations and provide moral support, as well as to help navigate the system where appropriate.

Other

• Facilitate workshops around police and the broader carceral system, particularly with youth and marginalized communities;
• Provide one-on-one information about what to expect in various encounters with the carceral system;
• Connect people to supports;
• Track trends in police behaviour vis-à-vis activists and protests;

Confused as to why I would be upset at Caryma Sa'd's footage going "viral internationally" when:

A) She arrived hours after the fact (it wasn't HER footage — attached — that was stolen by Andy Ngo and that caused Harry Faulkner to weep), so all she could leverage was a certain numpty trying to behead it, not the actual toppling. And

B) I thought she was a normal, if misguided, human being for another month, until it became clear that Chris Sky's sinophobia was a FEATURE not a bug of bringing him to the Chinatown Centre.

Which is weird, because I had already blocked her on Twitter by this point (June), and I unblocked her (!!) during this. And then reblocked her a month later. I can only imagine it was one of her many examples of anti-Black racism that caused the initial block. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Mercifully, Mastodon lets you leave notes for why you block people. No need to second-guess yourself.

Everything I say below this point does not apply to people living at subsistence levels. You're already out of the system, you just don't know it yet.
Or more likely: you do.

I see a headline like this one and my brain goes off in five different directions. But I think the most important one is for us to start consciously appreciating how we participate in the system, because every purchase, every hour spent working, every item coveted for anything other than its utility or beauty, is propping up this society.

So the first question is, what can you do to reduce your participation by 10%?

And the second question is how fragile do you think the system is? How many people withdrawing 10% of their energy and attention will cause a dent?

Most people think the system is robust: It's something that you can't fix or alter. I maintain that it is a lot more fragile than people are allowed to consider.

And I say "allowed to consider" because the point is to keep people too distracted and too busy to mull any of this over.

We're supposedly in the age of disruption.
But the disruptions are entirely superficial.

The disruptions are designed to leave everything the same, except funnel the money into somebody else's pocket.

But what if we actually disrupted shit?
What if we took a step toward not requiring currency, AND not requiring a digital version instead.

But that's another conversation for another day.
For now let's leave it at 10% less participation in this immensely problematic system.

For at least the past 2 years, Adam Lee Wasserman has been expressing consternation at the fact that I am not currently in jail despite his and Caryma's best efforts.

It's only recently that I've understood exactly HOW he acquired his understanding of the criminal justice system. Discovering that abolitionists exist must have been like Christmas to someone who has faced double-digit quantities of harassment-related charges.

I don't know if you caught it, but a few weeks ago Harlan Sanders' grandson decided to share the KFC secret recipe with the world. I don't know the context of why he did such a thing, but I'm totally willing to test it out. Mind you, I haven't eaten KFC in rather a long time so I'm going by my memory here.

1. Sage — 1 tbsp and ¼ tsp
2. Cloves — ½ tsp
3. Nutmeg — ¼ tsp
4. Cinnamon — ½ tsp
5. Red pepper/Cayenne — 2 pinches
6. Coriander — ½ tsp
7. Ginger — ¼ tsp
8. Garlic powder — 1 tsp
9. White pepper — 1 tbsp
10. Black pepper — 1½ tbsp
11. Cardamom — 1 tsp (secret ingredient)

Add salt and use 3 cups of cake flour.

Well I don't have cake flour on hand at the moment, so I'm just using unbleached all purpose, and it does taste like I remember.

Served with a Greek salad (minus the feta) because I'm going to be eating these damn tomatoes for another month at least, before I even have to break into the home-canned tomatoes. Yes, it's yellow and brown tomatoes in the salad tonight because that's what's ripe at the moment. It is a proper Greek dressing with lemon and oregano, though.

I was mulling over the enraging phenomenon of Black cops (and judges) and how HARD they cape for white supremacy, and it brought me to mulling about the conclusions people draw around the concept of "whiteness" and the myriad ways in which it is NOT about skin colour.

Black people who fervently desire acceptance within white supremacist structures and systems rightly understand that Black people are not afforded individuality, the way white people KNOW they are.

That is, the negative actions of one white person are not held to be representative of all white people the way the negative actions of one Black person are considered magically connate to the entire race, while the positive actions/contributions of one white person are magically connate, and those of a Black person are considered the exception.

But the conclusion they draw is that they must stomp out any "bad" behaviour in their kin much harder because it "reflects" back on them, rather than the system is fundamentally, critically flawed.

They will NEVER attain whiteness, no matter how hard they may punch or punish a young Black person.

Never.

I have more thoughts on this subject, but this bus ride is almost over. I am deciding how to consolidate these thoughts into something that can be used to affect change.

The fifth action of the day (yesterday) produced some wild juxtapositions.

Videos were projected on the side of the Bell Lightbox itself and the Scotiabank theatre.

Cops threatened people with mischief and *vandalism* for projecting on a building, demonstrating why I tell people that cops are gonna overcharge and know full well that that shit won't hold up in court.

The process IS the punishment.

And I would love to announce what we're working on as pertains to the subject, but I would also like to avoid having the "I have a weird, rabid stalker" conversation with yet another org for as long as possible.

Today's multiple shorter protests certainly demonstrated the promise of pop-up protests. They were all organized by different groups, but this definitely could be a thing.

The two that were either regularly scheduled or publicly announced were the only ones with timely police presence.

The close proximity of the latter two undoubtedly accounted for the extra cops at the earlier of the two, where normally there are like three cops.

Somewhat surprised by the paucity of cops at Indigo, but there were likely more staged close by. The Court Services van certainly appeared shortly after the wrap.

Heather did warrant actual "brass" appearing, though. Fucking Toe Beard. That shall evermore be his nickname.

Rolling protests are the way to go, really.
By the time cops arrive at one, people are on their way to the next one.

Potato Day part 2.
(You didn't miss photos. I never got around to posting them last night.)

I dumped my potato bags yesterday and then started helping my friend with the potatoes I planted in his yard, but then we discovered red ants.

I've already had two red ant bites this summer, and I'm good with never experiencing another one ever. I don't know why something so small makes a bite that feels like 10 mosquitoes bit you on the exact same spot. But I don't like it.

So picked up with the potatoes today, also started sorting for seed potatoes. I guess I'm going to need to make a thread because I want to attach a bunch of pictures.

Also:
WTF eats potatoes UNDERGROUND? That last photo of the set, I dug it up that way.
