under the hood, the measurements were all based on imperial, and they were supposed to do an invisible conversion to metric for display. HOWEVER, the accuracy of that depended ENTIRELY on the level of precision each manufacturer had set when creating the 3D models of their kit.

i used to do MEP design for a living and we were regularly forced to use autodesk revit, *spits*, to design buildings in 3D. the idea was that the client would get a 3D model of their building that was accurate and each item in the model would contain maintenance information etc. you could also use it to do takeoffs for pipework, and create a bill of materials for a project. amazing, right?
