2 months and 2 follow-ups later, Kaiser is insisting that I pay $340 for an annual wellness visit that, without any warning, was turned into an "office visit" (code 99214, which is supposed to be used for "moderate level of medical decision making").

The PA told me: "I won't sign your form, and if that's what you came here for then we can skip the tests, but while you're here do you have anything else you want to talk about?"

Then I get charged $340 for answering her question? What a scam!

I drove to Portland and got the form signed by my PCP this morning (this time I consented to Abridge to see it in action, but the screen only indicates that it’s recording audio; it doesn’t generate live transcripts or anything) ✅

But then a $340 bill for the useless PA visit landed in my inbox so I spent 30 minutes calling Kaiser again to nicely ask that this be counted as one of my “preventative $5 copay” visits (I think everyone gets 3 per year?)… this is such a ridiculously broken system 🫠

They asked me why and complained that this will only take up their time, claiming “it’s not really AI, my husband is an engineer and he said they shouldn’t even call it AI”. The Kaiser PA didn’t want to sign the release form for my Oregon Tradeswomen program application because my left hip issues (from falling off my bike… twice in 2 years) are in my medical records and they’re worried about me lifting 50 pounds and bending/squatting repeatedly 🙃

Apparently even my primary care physician can’t sign this, because it’s simply not something they do; they told me to google for places that provide “functional (or physical) capacity exam” services 🙃

The other day a woman at my indoor cycling class asked me “how do you grocery shop on a bicycle?” and I was so taken aback that I couldn’t quite express how much I can carry in my Timbuk2 Tuck backpack. #BikeTooter

Honestly I respect all the Portland runners and bikers, because I hate city running and very scared of all the visually obstructed intersections (though I know they’re working on daylighting)… I’ve been to a few NOPO Run Club and Deadstock Run Club runs, and it’s so hard for me to relax and get into my running zone/speed, because of course I have to slow down and stop every single block to make sure I won’t get hit by cars, e-scooters, etc. 🥲 (though running in big groups is helpful for this!)

Everyone else is making turkey and mashed potatoes and such today, but I made super fluffy vegan bao! 💖 (There is a lot of filling inside this one, they just somehow ended up at the edges… also my baos are ugly so I gave up and made one empanada style.)

I grabbed a box of sanitary pads at Costco because I thought it'd be easy to find a place to drop it off, but it turns out that the online version of the Street Roots Rose City Resource guide isn't very usable/item-specific, and it's surprisingly difficult to find a women-focused, non-religiously-affiliated place.

I spent a chunk of money at a completely underwhelming local business today that was honestly the picture of gentrification, and because it’s the holiday season, they had set up a donations box for items like sanitary pads for homeless women. So now I’m feeling bad that I spent money that I could’ve simply donated to far better causes than filling my belly with overpriced mediocre bland food, at a kind of place that asks for default 20% “tip” upfront so their employees won’t complain about pay 🫠
