Henley & Partners recently described a bitcoin wallet as a “Schrödinger’s asset.” It exists everywhere and nowhere, until the owner converts it to fiat or declares it to authorities.

I like the analogy, but I think they’re missing something.

What happens when the owner dies?

The box opens, whether the owner planned for it or not.

Now there are questions that didn’t seem to matter before. Which country’s inheritance laws apply? Who is legally entitled to the bitcoin? And who can actually move it?

In many countries in Europe and Latin America, children have a legal right to part of an estate, even if the will says otherwise.

But here’s what makes bitcoin different. A court may decide who is entitled to it, but that doesn’t mean anyone has the keys to move it.

Do you know which country’s inheritance laws would apply to your bitcoin? And would your heirs be able to access it?

This is part of the work I do at The Bitcoin Adviser, helping families think through custody and inheritance before either becomes a problem.

https://thebitcoinadviser.com/dalia

Henley’s essay:
https://www.henleyglobal.com/publications/crypto-wealth-report-2025/digital-offshore-and-future-cross-border-wealth

Ledger’s guidance to CryptoBilis buyers on Friday was precise: don’t initialize, and if you already did, move to a new signer with a new seed.
New seed, not just new hardware. The working assumption is that someone else already knows the seed, so restoring it onto a clean device changes nothing.
That is the single-sig problem in one sentence. The device that generates your entropy is the whole security model, and you can’t audit it from the outside.
The Coldcard entropy flaw in August had the same shape. The coins that got swept sat in single-signature addresses.
If your seed was known the day it was made, single-sig has nothing left to stop anyone. On multisig, how many of your keys were generated on hardware from the same vendor, bought through the same channel?
I do custody and inheritance work at The Bitcoin Adviser, so weigh that accordingly.
https://www.theblock.co/news/business/2026-10-09-ledger-cryptobilis-fund-losses-418163

      We’ve spent years debating CBDCs.

I think we’ve been debating the wrong object.

If what people actually fear is universal identity resolution and centralized visibility, you don’t need a central bank liability. You need a directory.

That’s the argument I make after digging into Colombia’s Bre-B, Brazil’s Pix, and the digital euro debate.

One of the more surprising conclusions: every statement I quote from the institutions involved is technically true.

https://substack.com/@sovereigndwp/note/p-207175790?r=1mz29t&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=notes-share-action
