Context
- At the moment, Piefed instances are not fully supported by lemmy-federate. Piefed instances can register as ActivityPub clients, but the auto-subscription does not work
- Piefed instances currently monitors !newcommunities@lemmy.world to identify new communities and add them to the known communities, but that does not solve the issue of Lemmy instances now knowing about new Piefed communities
- The lemmy-federate owner would accept a PR that would provide full support for Piefed ( https://lemmy.zip/post/47043209/21035643 )

Links
- very rough issue: https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/issues/761
- current discussion on Zulip: https://chat.piefed.social/#narrow/channel/4-developers/topic/Lemmyverse.20Community.20Discovery/near/4966

It could bring all E2EE messenger apps like Signal, WhatsApp, iMessage, and others into scope.
> >
> >Whittaker said there is no such thing as a backdoor for E2EE "that only the good guys can access," however.
> >
> >"Either it's a vulnerability that lets everyone in, or we continue to uphold strong, robust encryption and ensure the right to privacy for everyone. It either works for everyone or it's broken for everyone, and our response is the same: We would leave the market before we would comply with something that would catastrophically undermine our ability to provide private communications."
>
> >Sweden launched an investigation into its data retention and access laws in 2021, which was finalized and published in May 2023, led by Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer.
> >
> >Strömmer said it was vital that law enforcement and intelligence agencies were able to access encrypted messaging content to scupper serious crime – the main argument made by the UK in pursuing its long-term ambition to break E2EE.
> >
> >The inquiry made several proposals to amend existing legislation, including the recommendation that encrypted messaging must store chat data for up to two years and make it available to law enforcement officials upon request.
> >
> >It would essentially mirror the existing obligation for telecoms companies to provide call and SMS data to law enforcement, as is standard across many parts of the developed world, but extend it to encrypted communications providers.

Just randomly sharing my experience here. My sister told me a few weeks ago she was going to change for a new phone (a Motorola, she likes AOSP-like experience). I noticed that her new phone wouldn't get a jack.

"Yeah, I know, I hope I can make it work with a USB-adapter". She has nice headphones that she likes to use, so USB-C earplugs were not an option.

Fast forward to today, she told me the adapter she got starts to malfunction:
- she has to twitch the jack in the adapter for the thing to work
- when she plugs the adapter in, Google Assistant takes over and randomly starts skipping songs.

She's now considering getting wireless earbuds, but she's not a fan of having to recharge them to be able to use them, and is also cautious about the e-waste potential.

I have a Moto G84 which does the job. It's not the best phone in the world, I'm eyeing a flagship from time to time and keep the G84 as a "connected walkman", but would it break today, I would probably get a G55 (https://www.notebookcheck.net/Motorola-Moto-G55-smartphone-review-Inexpensive-doesn-t-have-to-be-boring.932900.0.html)

That's it for me, do you have similar experiences to share?
