As you've seen on the previous image, the compound covering about half the die underwent chemical transformation due to heat, aka charred. Boiling the sample allowed it to detach itself from the pad, as well as removing most of the char.

The site of the catastrophic failure can be seen in detail now. Pin 1 is apparently top right corner.

Yes, the "responsible" disclosure was designed to push as much responsibility to whoever finds The Bug and absolve everyone else. It is an emotionally-charged term, and I think purposefully so. You are supposed to feel bad about *not* doing it or doing it in a way The Company disagrees with. I mean, think of the children^W^W^Wusers! And then when you, in your silliness, try to do the supposedly right thing, and get a legal threat back -- well, folks, that ain't kind of the responsibility I remember ever taking upon myself. If I get threats and violence for doing supposedly good, I ain't doing good no more, sorry. Not interested. Maybe someone else will, I don't care. So I say we treat vulnerability disclosure as proper journalism, according to Orwell: "Journalism is printing what someone else does not want published; everything else is public relations."

Yes, the select few have made a fortune on bug bounties or whatever, but the vast majority gets breadcrumbs and the feeling of Doing The Right Thing. That feeling is where they got us. Taking responsibility for someone else's fuck-ups and feeling guilty for not being responsible enough, that's so weird, man. I didn't put the bugs in there, you did, dear company, by hiring the cheapest contractors to do the job and firing the one person who actually cared. We all know how it goes. After all, nothing a company does is in the interest of the end user or anybody else but the company itself and/or the shareholders.

So yeah, got a 0-day? To full disclosure, or sell it off if that's your thing. At least remember you got a choice here.

Good day to you! It is the first day of May here in Copenhagen, it is Friday, and it is hot like summer. This means, it is a good day for #nakeddiefriday so without further ado, here it is.

This is one Zilog Z765APS, a floppy disk controller chip of 1984 vintage made in NMOS. This one is very similar to NEC uPD765A; I am not sure if Zilog licensed the maskwork. What I find particularly interesting about this one is a relatively huge microcode ROM on the left side of the die. Wouldn't it be interesting to learn what they needed so much code for?

Let's experiment a bit: how about you guys scroll around the die and post the snippets you found most interesting in the comments below? We can discuss later.

I say, there is not much to be seen under all the power distribution. There are a couple distinct IP blocks the purpose of which I do not know; some of them look more analog than the others. Note the colours; as it would seem, this is likely to be a copper process. The lower layers never shone the classic silver.

Today's exhibit is an old PIC1650A. Yes, one of *the* PIC series of microcontrollers. Note it was designed by General Instrument in 1980. It was fabbed in a single metal layer, metal-gate NMOS process. The image is about 4.3x3.8 mm.

This one is HV9911 by Supertex (now owned by Microchip). Those following me have probably seen the epic struggle with restoring a diving light; this one came from the LED driver chip in the light. Entirely undamaged, as far as I can tell. Of particular interest is an array of fuses in the top right corner.

as for your other concern, not much you can do about it without examining the received media in detail. to save time, you could produce a small still image every hour, for example; much easier to inspect daily instead of watching everything, but still requires a human in the loop.

The other two units are 4 blocks each but of different construction. I am not quite sure why the difference; could be because the IRAM is dual-port and the XRAM isn't. Can't definitely say which one is which though.

There seems to be three distinct memory arrays on the die, located left, top, and right. The datasheet mentions that the max spec configuration is 2KB IRAM, 2KB XRAM, and 128K mask ROM. I strongly suspect they just use the same die for all of them.

The mask ROM is easy to spot, it is the largest one and consists of 8 blocks. Block structure is rather peculiar with sawtooth-like patterns all across. So far I've only seen Siemens/Infineon employ this particular design; if anyone has any further info please leave a comment as I'd love to learn more about it.

The middle of the die is taken up by a variety of units. Some of them have amazing regularity, hinting at parallel processing of data. Almost universally it is done 16-ways, which checks out with the internal data bus width being 16 bits. It is hard to pinpoint which ones does what exactly.

At the top center is a very distinct unit, with two PLAs and some logic. I feel that's not quite enough to make up a full 16-bit CPU, and the amount of lines wired into it is on the smaller side. Could be the CAN unit? We've seen a similar implementation from Philips last time, also sporting two PLAs.

There is also a mirrored Bosch logo and copyright.

Today's entry is an Infineon/Siemens SAB-C167CR-LM, a microcontroller based on the C166 core. The die is in pleasant-looking pastel colours. :-) The die has pin 1 in top left corner. I'll do a short thread.

Today's specimen is p/n SC13890P23A by Motorola/Freescale. This came from an embedded cellular modem I tore out of [redacted]. The die is marked ATLAS-UL.

It is the most colourful die I have ever imaged. :rainbow_puke:
