Okay, yeah, then it makes a little more sense. I should have clarified what I was asking you to test, because if the phone is connected to your home wifi, it's still effectively the same network and wouldn't eliminate your ISP as the source of your problem.

It sounds like Comcast is the trouble, and that's why the VPN is helping. If you run into enough sites that are either blocking VPN usage, or run slower than expected, check out the DNS alternative, as Comcast's DNS is bad.

That seems like a really odd solution to me, considering what I know about VPNs and the way you were still having the issue going through your phone's hot spot. Was your phone on your home network when you tried connecting your laptop through it, by chance?

Another thing to try, if you're curious, and since some sites will block your access with a VPN, can you try setting up an alternative DNS? I personally use Quad9 https://quad9.net/ but there others available too.

Things to try if replacing the laptop isn't an option:
1. Are you able to plug into your modem/router with a network cable?
2. Check to see if Dell has updated drivers for your networking hardware in case it's that instead of hardware failure.
3. See if you can get a replacement network card or external adapter.

Have you tried Firefox to see if it's having the same issue? Edge runs on the same back end as Chrome, so it doesn't necessarily rule out an issue with the browser. If it's also doing it with Firefox, then it's likely a networking or ISP issue, but if Firefox works fine, then it's a browser issue.

Once you've narrowed it down, you might also look to see if there are any local fix-it/repair cafes being run in your area? Sometimes it's easier to fix these things hands on.

Also, I've seen at least once in Trek where the roadway is covered with solar panels in canon. (You can sure tell that Star Trek is written by people who don't know San Fran weather patterns, but maybe solar panels are efficient enough to get decent power when it's foggy in the future?)

I think Jessie is spot on in her analysis of this week's episode. I literally spent the episode with a horrified WTF look on my face, laughing at the sheer stupidity of it. She did help me pinpoint why certain things made me uncomfortable, as well as drew my attention to things that I had actually missed myself. Employers have been sold the lie they can replace their employees with ChatGPT, so the next generation has been sold the lie that they need to get good at using it to be employable, instead of learning the skills it's supposed to replace.

Unfortunately for everyone, ChatGPT and other Slop Engines aren't going to successfully replace people they're being marketed to replace, and a whole generation is being weakened by this. Everyone's being forced to learn this the hard way.
