This week I've learned that "per-connection randomized MAC" – while being great for privacy – can be an issue for login-based WiFi networks. First of all it requires you to login again every time you reconnect, but you may also get issues with let's say hotel WiFis that limit the number of devices on one account 😅

I think this is mostly an issue caused by the captive portal implementation.

BTW: the changes you've recently made to the AOT compiler so it no longer needs to compile apps on boot directly after the update is a solid quality of life improvement. It makes updates so much smoother because you no longer need to think about if you need the device in the next 15min or so.

My #Pixel8 is now running GrapheneOS (npub1kwa…e0nj) and apart from some smaller quirks, it's a smooth experience. I think not getting bugged by "yet another AI feature you should try" is a great side effect too. Will probably write a short blog post after a month or so.

I think the "app steals data" scheme was easy in earlier Android versions because nobody checked the permission list before installing. IMHO recent android versions improved the sandbox to make this harder, because they now ask the user to confirm the permission when it is first used, so it's more obvious to the user. The "ad ID" is somewhat of a hidden exception though and clearly a conflict of interest on the Google side (Apple has a similar issue BTW).
