I think we've been using a local GitLab CE instance for over a decade now and have only recently added a Forgejo deployment for some projects

Apart from the fact that Forgejo is simply brilliant - it is - migrating these projects from GitLab to Forgejo wasn't too difficult. The key is to script the entire migration and use the REST endpoints

Pipelines are a different story, but as Forgejo's actions are GitHub compatible, it's not too hard to find plenty of documentation on how to do it.

I’ve been using #Forgejo as a #Git repo server for a few days now for some of my personal & PhD projects and experiments.

And what can I say: I’m thrilled! I’m very familiar with #gitlab, but Forgejo has nothing to fear from the comparison! Of course, there's no feature parity, but it seems Forgejo/Gitea have simply focused on the essential aspects, and that works perfectly. Excellent performance, low resource footage, good CI/CD. On top of that, it’s fully FOSS, no ifs or buts!

I have to disagree on one point: it takes surprisingly little hardware resources to run #GenAI efficiently for say 20 ppl. The hardware required for this is now quite affordable for a reasonably sized company as well as for enthusiasts (excluding the current crazy RAM prices). And decentralised operation neither requires a nuclear power plant nor an ocean for cooling, it works perfectly well with renewable energy.

Decentralisation is the key, one could perhaps even call it democratisation.

The least you have to pay to get back basic proxy functionality is 10K per year. And so we decided to rather have one time migration costs and thus migrated to reposilite for maven and verdaccio for npm.

Reposilite is a bit strange, but it does its job and can be easily tamed using ansible.

The migration is still quite fresh, but so far things are running smoothly, so I can recommend both tools.

An brief 11 km fun run late this afternoon. The snow that was forecast actually arrived, so we now have a really beautiful winter wonderland. #Running in the snow becomes more difficult the deeper it is, but it's also much more fun 😃

And after a run like this, you definitely know why good winter gear makes sense.

Unfortunately, that much snow in November often translates to no snow during Xmas, but I hope for the best ☃️

I couldn't agree more! Maybe you're aware of this, but this has been researched more than once (I remember an old study by Intel from around 10 years ago), and the results haven't changed much.

The latest study I know is this one from 2021.

Spoiler: nothing can beat C/C++, JiT based languages are somewhere in the middle, but the middle is often like 100 times worse than the top languages.

I've been using Anthropic's Claude for some time, and recently it has been asking me questions that refer to other, earlier chats, such as "You know a lot about this, so you should be able to do it yourself"

I then asked it how much it knew about me, and it gave me a fairly comprehensive overview of what it had learned, where I live, that I'm currently building an AI workstation, ... All in all a pretty comprehensive profile, quite spooky. Good to soon have a local alternative!

The difference between a good and a bad spot for mobile internet around my house is dramatic, to say the least...

I'm stuck with #MobileInternet in my neighbourhood, but at least we have some #5G coverage. However, my kids often complain about how slow the internet was, and I'm not exactly happy about it either. On average, I only get about 100 Mbit DL for my "up to 500 Mbit" plan.

I'm trying to step up my #running after several days of illness, and it's literally an uphill battle

But it's almost fun because I know I can run my usual ~12km trail, as I've done countless times, so I just run. Interestingly, it's not my legs but my heart rate that shows me I'm still struggling. #Garmin tells me to rest for whopping 90h instead of the "normal" 15h. Really fascinating because I don't actually find it that strenuous.

Apart from that, I love #TrailRunning in Autumn!

After some waiting, I have finally received two nice little devices that I will have a lot of fun with in the future, both for my PhD studies and professionally.

2x96GB GDDR7 and over 2x24K CUDA cores finally make local experiments much more feasible and easier to plan 🤩

My 5c: Instead of buying a new TV, get a simple and cheap network switch (cheap as in 10 to 15 EUR), connect your existing network cable into the switch and use another short network cable to make a connection between the switch and the TV. Maybe you even have an old WLAN router that can also be used as a switch? Might be worth a try ...

It's strange what people are using LLMs for these days. Not only are many CVs obviously generated by an LLM, but so are their entire profiles...

Let me tell you one thing: if you can't even create a decent CV or profile yourself, describing yourself a little, then you lack the critical originality and creativity required for software development.
