The visibility of homeless people on street corners, begging for food and housing, is an obvious sign that our economy is failing. I've seen a large increase in the number of people begging at intersections in my suburbs far outside of Chicago, steadily increasing since Covid lockdowns ended.

Dictators need to hide the homeless in order to hide their economic failures. (Also, without an address, the homeless can't vote, making them easier targets.)

Republicans have always preferred the more expensive "prisons and insane asylums" response to #homelessness , rather than the less-expensive and proven #HousingFirst solutions.

Much of this current White House statement on the subject tries to forestall and negate #HousingFirst discussions by demonizing the homeless and portraying them all as either insane or addicts, rather than just signs of an economy that is failing to meet the basic needs of millions of its citizens.

WARNING--That story has a misleading headline!

The actual article says a #Waymo car was used one time, a while back, and under permission granted by the Courts for that individual case. The headline makes it sound like they are being used now, without court orders, for mass surveillance. But the text says something different.

The same is true for another story in my feed, about #UberEats #FoodDelivery #robots . The headline is fear-mongering clickbait, but the article says something else.

This is undoubtedly being done as #DISinformation , intended to trigger violence and destruction of private property-- which is exactly what the Right wants: videos of protestors setting cars and #robots on fire.🤦‍♀️

DO NOT GIVE THE RIGHT AN EXCUSE. Do not give them video to use as propaganda.

Keep it NON-VIOLENT.

Especially now, be extra vigilant what news you spread and what information you believe.

I'm not #Catholic , but I think part of the tragedy here is that his last official diplomatic act was meeting with #JDVance-- an American Nazi and a Fascist, someone who will never repent of his administration's countless human rights violations, and who has been MISleading a vast number of "Evangelicals" into hate and anti-Christian ideology.

While The Pope was probably too ill to say much at all (so I will not blame him primarily for the silence), the rest of the Church's leadership never called Vance out on his immorality, hate, and lies.

That does not bode well for the future of the Catholic Church and their future leadership in the world.

A lot of Jewish people hid their religion & their ethnicity after coming to the U.S. #AntiSemitism was not only in Germany, it was all over.

When you watch a #Superman movie or read the comics, you see a character created by two Jewish boys about a man from another world, with a secret identity, who puts on glasses and a suit to blend into the world around him.

That's who Superman is. He's the first-generation immigrant who was once called Kal-El, and is now Clark Kent.

But here's the important part:
NO ONE KNOWS his true identity.

He is a metaphor for so many first-generation Jewish people in the late 1800s/early 1900s, who hid their #Jewish #ancestry and changed their names to blend in.

Do you have Jewish ancestors? Look at your tree. Find the "Russian,” "Polish," “Ukrainian,” and "Czech" immigrants. Your Jewish ancestor probably comes from there. Research terms like "Shtetle" and "Pogroms."

It doesn't look like much in this photo, but they stopped counting the protestors at 3,000 people (out of a population of 30,173 people in 2023).

This was in the very small town of #Algonquin #Illinois , about 48 miles northwest of #Chicago . Some of these people are probably also from neighboring #LakeInTheHills , which has a population of 28,661.

Both communities tend to have considerably more Republican voters than Democrats.

Even in the smallest of small-town America, protests were going strong.

Let me start by saying my adult daughter & I are now safe...

Yesterday, we were threatened with a GUN by another driver, for no crime other than being unable to go faster (due to the salt truck & four cars in front of us, while driving on a two-lane road with oncoming traffic).

When we finally reached a left turn lane at a light, the extreme-tailgaiter behind us pulled around & pointed a GUN at my daughter in the passenger seat, before driving straight on.

I was unable to get a clear lisc plate, but police were very responsive. Unfortunately, we had been on rural roads, so no traffic cams caught him driving behind us to determine his plate number.

This was in the far suburbs of #Chicago , between #Naperville and #Aurora.

And that was not the same person as this a-hole [video].

I am 60 years old. I have never before seen a gun used or pointed at anyone in my life.

I truly believe the #MAGA mentality is empowering these jerks.

True. It doesn't get the money back from #NielGaiman that he was paid, but at least consumers won't be out so much money because they no longer wish to have his work in their libraries.

In that way, it IS kind of like the MAGAs who burned sneakers after having bought them-- but in this case, consumers are getting their money back when their purchase is destroyed/deleted.

It's an excellent corporate PR move, but also one which tells me his #audiobook publisher isn't going to carry his work anymore. Hopefully, he will be losing his reputation in the traditional publishing industry (much like #BillCosby lost his in Hollywood). It might be the only form of justice those women get.

Having heard how detailed and disgusting these accusations are, and the number of women coming forward with them, they seem very credible.

This past year, they've worked with experts to reduce the number of window strikes from #MigratingBirds. They installed a dotted pattern on their many huge window faces and have taken other measures to reduce bird strikes.

It's already resulted in much lower numbers of bird fatalities.

Over the years, any dead birds found there have been given to the #FieldMuseum, who has been studying them over time. They've noticed a pattern in the species who tend to hit most often, and have seen some genetic changes, which might be connected to #ClimateChange.

They forgot "trying to make time for a simple shower." My biggest and most frustrating challenge as a very new mom was finding the time-- and energy-- to take a long shower. I was chronically sleepy, and there always seemed to be something keeping me from getting in the shower.

Breastfeeding was a challenge in my case. The pump didn't work for me, so I could only feed directly.

Housework also changed. Not only were there more dishes and laundry to clean, but there were always a ton of toys or other baby items to pick up and put away. I could no longer clean most everything in the house in just a few days. Eventually, each room got assigned its own day of the week.

I ended up staying home and leaving the workforce. I looked at the budget and realized I would only make a few dollars a month (with my salary at the time) after paying for #childcare. The added stress and loss of time with my new daughter was not worth it for me.
