That building later became the historic autonomous social center Ungdomshuset—famously evicted and reduced to rubble in one of the biggest Danish police operations since the Second World War on March 1, 2007. The occupiers relentlessly pressured the government until it was forced to turn over another building for their use.

On March 1, demonstrators converged on the Federal Building outside the Twin Cities, temporarily blockading ICE inside it.

On one side of the building, fifty people established a shield wall. Sheriffs attacked immediately, but they held their ground for almost an hour.

At least 400 people marched on the other side of the federal building to demand that ICE withdraw from Minnesota and return the land that Fort Snelling occupies to the Dakota people. Many Native people participated in the march, including members of the Dakota, Ojibwe, and Chippewa tribes.

Even after the withdrawal of thousands of ICE agents from the Twin Cities, more than 400 remain—an unprecedented number before the surge of federal mercenaries into the city two months ago.

Thankfully, people are not finished fighting ICE.

You could focus on communications, intelligence gathering, fundraising, or some other task. Meet with others you trust and start making plans. Foster ties between different groups and demographics. Like an iceberg, the majority of your connections should be deep below the surface.

2 ) Establish community assemblies.

Bring together formal groups, community networks, and other concerned individuals to share information, coordinate campaigns, interchange resources, and strategize together. Build the foundations for enduring trust and long-term coordination.

Great.

But what's the strategy? Trump will not leave power willingly. Mere petitioning is pointless.

How do you topple an autocrat?

First, identify a segment of society that is not permanently committed to his reign, but whose support is essential to keeping him in power.

Analyze their interests. Identify what is more important to them than keeping him in power. Think about their vulnerabilities.

Next, identify a form of activity that could put that segment of the autocrat's supporters in a situation in which they will prefer to stop supporting him.

Engage in that activity—whatever it takes.

Repeat as needed until enough sectors of society shift their commitments.

All of this occurred in summer 2020.

Trump concentrated federal agents in Portland to try to show his supporters in the capitalist class that he could impose order to preserve business as usual. Because he failed—thanks to courageous resistance in Portland—capitalists did not support his 2021 coup.

If we don't want to live under the autocratic rule of Donald Trump or his successors forever, we have to use direct action to break up his support base and force those who have remained passive to take a stand against him.

The protesters confronted extreme police repression in the streets.

These events are part of the same wave of authoritarianism that is sweeping the world. All of our struggles are interlinked.

We keep hearing a binary narrative in which criminal oligarchs are undermining the rule of law.

It would be more precise to identify three camps:

—centrists who fetishize the rule of law as a good in and of itself;

—oligarchs aiming to overhaul the current courts and laws to be even more brutal;

—and those who reject both camps in favor of real freedom and equality.

In the first camp, we find those who believe that a certain amount of self-determination is acceptable, as long as it falls neatly within whatever laws happen to be on the books. They are also at ease with a wide range of ruthless self-seeking oppressive activity, provided it complies with the law.

In the second camp, we find those who are determined to consolidate power in their own hands, regardless of what laws happen to be on the books. Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and their various capitalist and fascist backers aim to replace the current laws and courts with something even worse.

In the third camp, we find those who believe that regardless of what laws happen to be on the books, no one should be able to dominate anyone else—whether by hoarding access to resources or wielding the instruments of state repression.

There is no excuse for tyranny.

Trump and Musk are the ones who are currently attracting the most attention, but behind them are Jeff Bezos, Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, and many more. The individual character flaws of these men are beside the point; the significant thing is that the mechanisms of neoliberal capitalism are systematically concentrating power in the hands of people who are completely disinterested in others’ agency or well-being.

This is why milquetoast centrism cannot offer a convincing alternative to the despotism of the fascists and technocrats.

In the morning, many hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Athens. After the speeches ended, tens of thousands of people engaged in conflict with the police all afternoon, including anarchists, students, and football supporters.

The train crash was the result of the same kind of capitalist kleptocracy that is afflicting people in the United States and elsewhere around the world. The more power the capitalist class concentrates in their hands, the more the rest of us will be exposed to danger in train and airplane crashes, pandemics, climate disasters, and other catastrophes. This is inevitable when there are vast disparities in wealth and power.

A Tesla dealership in Loveland, Colorado has been vandalized three times in the past three months, with red spray paint across the windshields and broken glass in the lot.

Last year, in Germany, some anarchists blocked the expansion of the Tesla Gigafactory by occupying the adjacent forest; other anarchists used direct action to shut down power supply to the factory.

At the same time, police departments are demanding that politicians channel additional taxpayer funds to police officers in return for them using body cameras.

Our entire society is being held hostage by these violent mercenaries. Not everyone is at risk of being murdered by police, but everyone is being robbed. The solution is not to pay them to wear body cameras (except when they don't want to). It is to cut off their access to our resources.

Nine years ago today, in Ferguson, Missouri, Darren Wilson murdered Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager—one of hundreds of cases every year in which a white police officer kills a young Black man in the United States.

Michael Brown's community responded immediately. For a week and a half, an ungovernable revolt raged in on the streets of Ferguson as angry residents and their supporters used a variety of tactics including arson, property destruction, looting, and gunfire to keep police at a distance and impose consequences for the murder. This set a precedent for subsequent rebellions around the country, culminating with the countrywide upheaval in response to the murder of George Floyd.

To understand the events of 2020 better, we can revisit the uprising in Ferguson and the practices and discourses that emerged in those days.
