I never found tiling window managers limiting, especially since all of them I use(d) have the option to have windows float if needed (I rarely need that though).<br/><br/>I started out on xmonad, used that for several decades until it seems to become inevitable that wayland would be forced upon me. Used i3 for a while to get used to it then made the switch to sway. Still not convinced that wayland is the future though, even though the fanbois keep banging on about how it is. It feels like a step back with all the crashing, flashing screens and pain-in-the-ass that screen capture is. I don&#39;t have a desktop either, just a window manager (or what is called a compositor in newspeak), and even go a step further in that I don&#39;t believe in having to drag windows around at all or change their size by dragging on the corners or sides. Tiling window managers is where I&#39;m at.<br/><br/>I can imagine that older window managers don&#39;t particularly fare well on laptops, I don&#39;t think portable computing was particularly common in the late eighties / early nineties :)<br/><br/>I do like simplicity as well. It happened again, and I then went and changed the badlogin settings in server.json to make the timeout 10 seconds and restarted snac, but login was still hanging in ironfox on my phone. It&#39;s not one thing, just a number of things snac got right that jive with me.<br/><br/>My primary objective was to reduce resource consumption. I started my fediverse journey with self-hosted mastodon, then switched to friendica. Both eat CPU, RAM and disk I/O like a pack of hungry wolves and still perform poorly.<br/><br/>Snac is one simple daemon without a need for a database server, a caching key/value store or web app framework that takes minutes to boot. When I start snac, it&#39;s ready to serve within seconds.<br/><br/>It has proper man pages that explain all you need to know.<br/><br/>There is no javascript framework that bogs down your browser and gets all the async api calls tangled up in a big ball of tardiness. It&#39;s just good old server-side rendered html.<br/><br/>It&#39;s a really solid unixy application, easily installed as a FreeBSD package.
