I thought Rachel Notley was awesome even though she was a pipeline queen, but she balanced oil industry compromise with strong green energy investments and got pipelines approved by ensuring climate-centered regulation. She made Alberta a more sustainable energy leader. Compromising with oil was still a (big) strike against her, but one I could live with.

Now our Alberta NDP is telling us that oil is the only thing Alberta can survive on and anybody who doesn't support oil is an enemy of Alberta. That is NOT the kind of "compromise" I can live with. This is the propaganda of Alberta Separatists and the UCP. It does not belong in the NDP tent.

By now most everyone has heard of the US and Israel claiming their war on Iran is a Holy War, and a "part of God's divine plan" to usher in the return of Christ, claiming that "President Trump has been annointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth".

A number of you have questioned the validity of this claim, so I'm showing you the receipts: OVER 200 calls from more than 50 military installations across all the services since Saturday, from service men and women complaining to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) about the religious zealousy presented by their commanders.

Because while US military leadership is 100% Christian Nationalist, the men and women who serve and lay their lives on the line to protect the Constitution, not somebody's questionable interpretation of Biblical prophecy, are not.

Now consider how the world would react if ANYBODY were to bomb America and murder Americans and American children, with the excuse that "Trump is evil and Republicans must be overthrown".

While we all agree with that, nobody would ever consider that would justify the bombing of a (white) nation.

So why is it so easy for some to completely suspend any rational sense of humanity to justify bombing Iran's capital, killing in just one example well over 100 out of only 170 people from just one single girls school out of countless other targets, with the exact same justification?

The answer is chillingly simple: Islamophobia. Hate and division which allows us to see other people as "not people".

If this had anything to do with expelling "evil leaders" then the same justification could be used to bomb the US. The same justification could be used to bomb Israel. But it only applies when the people of the nation are "not like us".

Prime Minister Carney's statement on this matter reeks of racism.

Actually, it doesn't matter if they "just lay there" or not. Either way they are considered resisting because the act of resisting law enforcement is not determined by the actions of the victim, but rather the actions of the LEO. If rhe LEO used brutality and violence without reason, then the victim is considered o be "resisting" even if they never move a muscle from a prone poaition.

In just one example of many (because once you become a target then until you move out of the district then every encounter is preceded with, "I read your file". In recent news, Alex Pretti's last encounter was his second), I had a more veteran cop use me as a dummy to teach a more rookie cop, by squeezing me as hard as possible on the back of the neck completely randomly out of the blue so she could show him, "See how the muscle tenses up in his neck when I do this? That's called resisting." Muscle tensing is an involuntary bodily response to pain. It is impossible for the recieving party to control. And they make absolutely sure you FEEL the pain. The more pain they inflict, the more guty you are.

People need to wake up and realise that the charge of "resisiting arrest" means only that unnecesary violence was used against a civilian, and has nothing to do with "resisting" or "arrest". In order to be charged with it, not only do you not need to "move" or "resist" in any way, but you don't need to be under arrest, being arrested, be charged with any arrestable crime, or even be considered for arrest. When there is no arrest being made, you are charged with "resisitng arrest" based solely on the fact that violence was used against you and the perpetrators cannot justify that violence in any other way.

I don't know how it works in the US, but in Canada a charge of resisting arrest cannot be challenged in court. If an LEO says it, then it's an automatic guilt based on their word alone with no proof or argument. This is why when cops here beat you up they scream "stop resisting!" at the top of their lungs with every single punch they throw on your prone, still body... just in case somebody can hear; to drown out your screams of pain, your pleas for help, and the unmistakable sound of human flesh being pounded mercilessly to a pulp.

Also, I have to add a positive note. A LOT has changed since George Floyd. I was in his exact position choking out the exact same words, "I can't breathe", to receive the exact same response, "I don't care", many years before his murder. I was lucky to survive, but when I heard his story it hit me hard knowing that would have been me a few seonds longer.

Thanks to him, I no longer live in the same fear and terror every day of my life, because of Black Lives Matter and the change and awareness they brought. All my experiences were pre-BLM, and pre-George Floyd. All of them were brought on by police discrimination, both classism and racism, and police intimidation; their uncontrollable desire for power tripping and violence. I still have trauma, but my life in the present has changed since and it had nothing to do with me. But yes all this pro-ICE MAGA shit opens up a lot of old wounds and trauma, especially when repeated by authoritarian UCP supporters right here at home.

We are going through all of this again, and it is vital that people reaist and apeak out against this tyranny and these brutal murders. We CAN change the world, but it takes some serious effort on everybody's part, not just the victims.

The first step we all need to do is STOP ASSUMING ANYBODY IS A CRIMINAL (or undesirable) FOR HAVING AN ENCOUNTER WITH POLICE. In this country, we are innocent until proven guilty, and police presence doesnt prove shit.

I learned on Saturday that Bari Weiss spiked our story, INSIDE CECOT, which was supposed to air tonight. We (Ori and I) asked for a call to discuss her decision. She did not afford us that courtesy/opportunity.

Our story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices. It is factually correct. In my view, pulling it now-after every rigorous internal check has been met is not an editorial decision, it is a political one.

We requested responses to questions and/or interviews with DHS, the White House, and the State Department. Government silence is a statement, not a VETO. Their refusal to be interviewed is a tactical maneuver designed to kill the story.

CBS spiked the Jeffrey Wigand interview due to legal concerns, nearly destroying the credibility of this broadcast. It took years to recover from that “low point.” By pulling this story to shield an administration, we are repeating that history, but for political optics rather than legal ones.

We have been promoting this story on social media for days. Our viewers are expecting it. When it fails to air without a credible explanation, the public will correctly identify this as corporate censorship. We are trading 50 years of “Gold Standard” reputation for a single week of political quiet.

I care too much about this broadcast to watch it be dismantled without a fight.

The bottom line is, without Journalistic Independence and Journalistic Integrity, journalism is dead. If the public cannot trust the truthful content of 60 Minutes or any other media, there is no point to it.

Note that the Conservative Party of Canada from Erin O'Toole to Pierre Poilievre has been on a witch hunt to end the CBC for the exact same reason: Journalistic Independence, which the CBC, unlike CBS, has CODIFIED INTO CANADIAN LAW.

Turns out that all the sayings came from a game called Helldivers 2, where you play as a member of a Totalitarian regime and ironically call your enemies fascists, and from transphobic and homophobic memes originating from the online forums for games like this. In particular, I remember seeing the original news report which stated that a certain casing marked with an up, right, down, down, down arrow pattern was "transgender ideology". I was like, what? That's obviously a controller sequence for a video game. Turns out it's how you drop a 500 kg bomb in Helldivers 2, the source of every other engraving.

With absolutely no suspect, the Trump administration and MAGA following immediately blamed a "transgender antifascist" and HAD ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT looking for that person. Reminiscent of Charlie Kirk himself echoing Trump's lie that the American citizen sent toba concentration camp in El Salvadore with no due process was an MS13 gang member, based on him being a Latino with finger tatts.

It was the alleged shooter's father who told him to turn himself in, then called the US Marshalls on his son to arrest him. The Robinson family is deeply Republican, and they raised (sorry, groomed) their son with guns and celebrated his growth as a "gun-toting cowboy-loving" kid. So I guess Mr. Robinson did a real service to his country, because otherwise they would have been searching for a transgender leftist, based on their hateful profiling.

'For the past eight years I have worked as a stringer for Reuters news agency. My photos covering stories in the prairie provinces have been published by the New York Times, Al Jazeera, and other media outlets across North America, Asia, Europe, and elsewhere. At this point it’s become impossible for me to maintain a relationship with Reuters given its role in justifying and enabling the systematic assassination of 245 journalists in Gaza. I owe my colleagues in Palestine at least this much, and so much more.

When Israel murdered Anas Al-Sharif, together with the entire Al-Jazeera crew in Gaza City on August 10, Reuters chose to publish Israel’s entirely baseless claim that Al-Sharif was a Hamas operative – one of countless lies that media outlets like Reuters have dutifully repeated and dignified. Reuters’ willingness to perpetuate Israel’s propaganda has not spared their own reporters from Israel’s genocide. Five more journalists, including Reuters cameraman Hossam Al-Masri, were among 20 people killed this morning in another attack on Nasser hospital. It was what’s known as a “double tap” strike, in which Israel bombs a civilian target like a school or hospital; waits for medics, rescue teams, and journalists to arrive; and then strikes again.

Western media is directly culpable for creating the conditions in which this can happen. As Jeremy Scahill from Drop Site News put it, “every major outlet – from the New York Times to the Washington Post, from AP to Reuters – has served as a conveyor belt for Israeli propaganda, sanitizing war crimes and dehumanizing victims, abandoning their colleagues and their alleged commitment to true and ethical reporting.”

By repeating Israel’s genocidal fabrications without determining if they have any credibility – willfully abandoning the most basic responsibility of journalism – Western media outlets have made possible the killing of more journalists in two years on one tiny strip of land than in WWI, WWII, and the wars in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia, and Ukraine combined, to say nothing of starving an entire population, shredding its children, and burning people alive.

The fact that Anas Al-Sharif’s work won a Pulitzer Prize for Reuters did not compel them to come to his defence when Israeli occupation forces placed him on a “hit list” of journalists accused of being Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants. It did not compel them to come to his defence when he appealed to international media for protection after an Israeli military spokesperson posted a video making clear their intention to assassinate him following a report he did on the growing famine. It did not compel them to report on his death honestly when he was hunted and killed weeks later.

I have valued the work that I brought to Reuters over the past eight years, but at this point I can’t conceive of wearing this press pass with anything but deep shame and grief. I don’t know what it means to begin to honour the courage and sacrifice of journalists in Gaza – the bravest and best to ever live – but going forward I will direct whatever contributions I have to offer with that front of mind.'

'President Trump signed an executive order today directing states to criminalize unhoused people and institutionalize people with mental health disabilities and substance use disorder.

The order, titled “Ending Crime and Disorder on American Streets,” directs the Justice Department to expand indefinite forced treatment for people with mental health disabilities or substance use disorder, and those living on the street who “cannot care for themselves.” The order also purports to eliminate federal funding for evidence-based programs, like harm reduction and housing first, that save lives, and directs federal funds toward cities and states that criminalize substance use disorder, punish people for sleeping outdoors, or enforce other laws targeting unhoused people.

The order also calls for sweeping federal data collection on unhoused people and those with mental health disabilities, raising serious concerns about surveillance, privacy, and how such data could be used to justify further criminalization. Instead of funding services or support, the administration is prioritizing profiling and control.'

GAZA CITY—In Gaza, there’s a popular saying that has been passed down by generations of families, reflecting our resilience in the face of difficult conditions: “No one dies of hunger.” For the longest time, that was true. In the Gaza that we knew, people struggled because of poverty, unemployment, and the other consequences of the occupation, but no one died because they had nothing to eat.

Today, we are witnessing the unthinkable. Hundreds are dying. And the cause? Hunger. Behind the headlines and beyond the numbers, flesh and blood people are cut off from basic necessities, including food, clean water, and medical care. They are facing a slow, quiet, forcibly imposed death.

Starvation is not a looming threat; it is a brutal, daily reality. Children cry themselves to sleep on an empty stomach. Parents break under the weight of helplessness, watching their sons and daughters grow thinner, weaker. Bread, once a basic staple, has become a luxury. Vegetables, milk, eggs have become unimaginable for most families. Hunger has overtaken war as the cruelest weapon.

In recent weeks, thousands of Palestinians have been killed or injured risking their lives to try to find food. My cousin, Yousef Ala’atal, just 14 years old, was among them. Hunger pushed him to seek food from an aid distribution site managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). He came back not only empty-handed, but with a bullet in his head, blood soaking his body, and lasting damage from the injury. Yousef asked his mother with a pain that a child’s heart cannot endure: “Am I going to stay like this?” After that question, silence overtook their family.

Children are the primary victims in this deliberate campaign of starvation; young ones can’t understand what it means that there is no food. Breaking their parents’ hearts with their hunger, older ones try to go to the GHF, which we refer to in Gaza as “death traps.” Many are killed, while others return injured, heartbroken, or sometimes find themselves detained.

Mohammed Dababsh, a 35 year old and father of two young children—Yazan and Masa—was killed on July 11 while trying to get food from an aid site run by the GHF. “He never wanted to go. He was completely against their humiliating and chaotic aid system,” recounted his wife, Ghandoura Abu Ziada. “But, one day, after they ordered us to evacuate from Khan Younis, he told me to take the kids and stay with my family until he could find us a safer place. He stayed behind in Khan Younis.”

As the family separated, the crushing burden of being unable to provide for his young children continued to weigh on Mohammed. This ultimately led him to try and risk getting food from a GHF site. “Masa has been asking for Indomie [instant] noodles for months. We kept explaining that bread and lentils are all we have, but her little mind couldn’t grasp it. While he was still in Khan Younis, his friends tried to convince him to go to the GHF, saying he might be able to get Indomie and biscuits for the kids.”

While Ghandoura was waiting for a regular call from Mohammed, she received one from his brother instead. He had been injured at a GHF site, he said, and was being taken to Nasser Hospital for treatment. Ghandoura rushed to the hospital searching and hoping to find him among the wounded. Half an hour after her arrival an ambulance arrived carrying his body.

“Our children still can’t understand. 'What do you mean he’s never coming back?' they ask. A few nights ago, Masa was going to the bathroom when she heard her grandfather’s voice and thought it was her father. She told me, 'Dad is here, let me go see him.' I told her he’s in heaven now, while my heart aches and cries,” she said. “They still wait for him. And so do I. I can’t believe it. I keep waiting for him to return. Mohammed was the one who provided for us. Now that he’s gone, everything has become even harder."

“We Don’t Want Them”

Sohaib Madi, a 24-year-old, was shot in the head while he was trying to get aid from the GHF for his family earlier this month. As a result, the right side of his body was paralyzed, and he lost his vision. He came to the GHF site desperate for food, and was transported to hospital still on an empty stomach. His mother cried for him for days. She feared losing him after she lost her daughter in January 2024, after being shot in the neck by a sniper while hanging laundry on a balcony in Khan Younis.

Palestinian women continue to bear a disproportionate share of the suffering in the Gaza Strip, enduring the same violence, displacement, starvation, and maltreatment as the rest of the population, but with the added burden of having to care for their families alone once male providers for their households are killed.

Last week, the GHF announced that they would dedicate a day exclusively for women to receive aid. The implied assumption was that women are not seen as a threat and, therefore, wouldn’t be targeted or killed while gathering aid. Yet this supposed extension of goodwill resulted in even more tragedy for Palestinian women.

Maria, a mother of seven who had lost her husband 10 months earlier, needed to secure her kids with food, and she had no choice but to go to one of the sites. Her daughter, Malak Sheikh El Eid, later recounted that her mother went twice and came back with nothing, having stared death in the face.

They pleaded with her not to go for aid again, but if she insisted, they asked to at least take them all with her. Their mother promised she wouldn’t go, but when they woke up, they found she had already left. Mariam recounted bitterly how, when she called her mother on the phone to check on her, a stranger answered and told her that her mother had sustained moderate injuries.

Later, Malak learned that her mother had been martyred with a bullet in her head, leaving behind seven orphaned children, who now have no father, no mother, and no food. Malak cried while recounting what happened in a video later posted on Instagram. Barely able to catch her breath through her tears, she said: “Close the GHF aid. We don’t want them.”

Survivors’ Guilt

Each day in Gaza we see dozens of people killed or wounded in the most humiliating way, while merely trying to obtain food for themselves and their families. Many Palestinian children now must live with the knowledge that their mother or father died while trying to secure them food, leaving them with a survivors’ guilt that will last a lifetime.

The deprivation from starvation and siege is visible upon people’s faces. People are looking hollow-eyed and tired. We are suffering not just from hunger, but from abandonment. Palestinians have been turned into symbols of suffering and defiance, whereas what we want is not only to survive, but also to truly live and feel alive once more. Instead, as the whole world watches, for nearly two years we have been brutally murdered and tormented in the most horrific and innovative ways that a human mind can devise.

The world is silent, but inside Gaza, there is no silence. There are the sounds of children collapsing from malnutrition, parents crying in frustration, communities trying to survive without food, fuel, or medicine. The suffering isn’t sudden: it is slow, deliberate, and devastating. As the expert on famine Alex de Waal said in a recent television interview, this starvation is the product of a “minutely engineered” Israeli policy aimed at breaking our ability to live.

We are not starving because of drought. We are not starving because of natural disasters. We are starving because of Israel’s decision to use starvation as a weapon against Gaza’s civilian population, and the world’s decision to permit it. Closing borders, shooting people waiting for aid, and turning away aid trucks has become acceptable, as long as it’s Gaza.

No political justification for this policy can erase the hollow look in a child’s eyes, the desperate hope in a mother’s voice, or the slow and cruel death of a people who are being starved in full view of the world. We do not need pity. We need pressure on those who are blocking food, those who remain silent, and those who still have the power to stop this but choose not to.

Because tomorrow, someone else will write another article. Another photo will circulate. Another child will die. And we will ask again: how many more lives must be extinguished before the world decides that Gaza deserves to live?

'Israel attacked the Cairo Elementary School for Girls in central Gaza City just as people had gathered in the school yard for Friday prayers, according to multiple eyewitnesses. Many of the displaced in the school are from areas in northern Beit Hanoun, which has been nearly completely destroyed and emptied by the Israeli military. So far, Israel has not published even a perfunctory justification for the strike and the Israeli military did not immediately respond to questions submitted by Drop Site about the attack.

“During Friday prayers, they bombed the school with the worshippers inside,” Ibrahim Abu Amsh, an eyewitness told Drop Site at the scene. “Most of the injured were children—defenseless, hungry children. All of them were in a state of exhaustion, unable even to stand—they probably hadn’t slept all night due to hunger.”

Dead bodies lay in the hallways, some ripped apart and limbs torn off. People fled the building in panic carrying children and few belongings. Blood covered the walls and floors. People lifted the dead and wounded, some badly burnt, to ambulances outside using blankets. At least one baby was among the dead, with the left side of its body blown off and flesh torn apart, being carried outside by emergency medical worker Omar Abu Mohsen.

“The school is full of displaced people—full of children, of women, of men, and of the elderly. The enemy is merciless,” Abu Mohsen said. “This is an enemy that seeks the extermination of the Palestinian people.”

“Isn't it enough that they’ve starved us to death? Isn't it enough that they’ve slaughtered us?” Zainab Adwan, who was displaced from Beit Hanoun and sheltering at the school, said. “The Israelis can’t confront the resistance. If they were real men, they would go face the resistance fighters at the borders. There are no fighters here. Where are the resistance fighters? These are just civilians.”

Israel’s continued military assault on Gaza kills scores of Palestinians across the enclave on a daily basis. At least 89 were killed over the past 24 hours, according to the ministry of health. This follows 89 killed on Thursday. 113 on Wednesday. 77 on Tuesday. 134 on Monday.

Friday’s attack came as Israel’s campaign of forced starvation in Gaza has reached a tipping point into rapidly increasing cases of death. Over the past five days alone, at least 54 Palestinians have died, including over 20 children, as a result of starvation and malnutrition, according to the Ministry of Health. The widening famine is affecting the entire population in Gaza. People are arriving at emergency rooms in a state of exhaustion, hunger and dehydration. Doctors and journalists who care and report on the famine are themselves weakened and struggling to work. Hospitals have run out of key treatments and medicines to urgently treat the ballooning cases of malnutrition.

Remnants of the munition photographed at the scene of the Cairo Elementary School for Girls attack were identified as the rocket motor portion of a U.S.-manufactured Hellfire missile, according to a weapons expert who reviewed the footage.

“The lot number indicates it was made by Lockheed Martin in 2012,” Trevor Ball, a munitions researcher and a former U.S. army explosive ordnance disposal specialist, told Drop Site, who added that the specific designation was AGM-114K-2. “It is a precision weapon so it would hit where aimed unless there was a malfunction of some kind,” Ball said. “This specific variant features a fragmentation sleeve which increases the fragmentation generated by the munition to more effectively kill or injure people in its area of effect.”'

'This is the grim choice every Palestinian medical worker faces: serve and be targeted, or flee and abandon your patients to die.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a pediatrician from northern Gaza, is one of those still detained. He’s been imprisoned without charge since December. His family tells me he’s still wearing the same winter clothes he was taken in, now threadbare from seven months of captivity. He’s lost an alarming amount of weight on two spoonfuls of rice a day and faced severe abuse. He has no access to medication. No access to medical care. Dr. Hussam should be at a hospital helping to lead Gaza’s recovery. Instead, he’s in a prison cell.

What was his crime? Staying. He refused to abandon newborns on ventilators at Kamal Adwan Hospital. He stayed and saved lives in a hospital under attack. For that, he was kidnapped.

He is not alone.

Dr. Marwan Al-Sultan, one of only two cardiologists left in northern Gaza and director of the Indonesian hospital, was killed this month by a precise Israeli airstrike on his home in Gaza City that targeted the floors where he and his family lived and left the other parts of the block untouched.

Dr. Ahmed Qandeel, a respected senior surgeon and mentor, was killed just over a week ago in an airstrike in Gaza City.

Dr. Adnan Al‑Bursh, a well-known orthopedic surgeon, was abducted, severely beaten in custody (leaving him with broken ribs and unable to walk or use the toilet independently, according to his fellow detainees’ testimony), and found dead under suspicious circumstances in Israeli custody.

(Note from me: These "suspicious circumstances" is what other reports have called "likely raped to death". According to Israeli human rights organisation, HaMoked, "Ofer Prison guards dragged Al-Bursh and dumped him in the prison yard, naked from the waist down, bleeding and unable to stand. Some of the other prisoners carried Al-Bursh to a nearby room, and he died moments later."

The choice to say "suspicious circumstances" was no doubt borne out of extreme caution and fear of retribution.)

There are too many stories to recount.

As the UN Human Rights Office said, ''The killing, detention and enforced disappearance of health workers in Gaza, in parallel with the systematic attacks and destruction of hospitals and other medical facilities, has had a devastating impact on the people.''

Each time a Palestinian doctor is killed or detained, it isn’t just a personal loss – it’s a collapse of community care. Patients are left without treatment. Wards are left without leadership. Babies in incubators lose their only chance of survival. A respected and dignified member of society is stripped of protected status. The death of a physician in Gaza means dozens, sometimes hundreds, of preventable deaths in the weeks and months that follow.'

Without immediate intervention, AFP’s last remaining journalists in Gaza could die.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) currently works with one freelance writer, three photographers, and six freelance video journalists in the Gaza Strip — the only ones left documenting what’s happening on the ground. No international media has been allowed into Gaza for nearly two years.

We refuse to stand by and watch them die.

One of them, Bashar, has been with AFP since 2010. He started as a field assistant, then worked as a freelance photographer, and became the lead photographer in 2024.

On Saturday, July 19, Bashar managed to post on Facebook:
“I no longer have the strength to work in the media. My body is thin. I can’t work anymore.”

Bashar, 30, lives and works under the same conditions as every Gazan moving from one refugee camp to another to escape Israeli bombardments. For over a year, he has lived in extreme poverty and continued working despite immense risks.

Sanitation is a major issue; he suffers from severe bouts of diarrhea. Since February, he has lived in the ruins of his home in Gaza City with his mother, four siblings, and his brother’s family. The home has no furniture, no electricity, no water he survives on scraps from relatives.

On Sunday, he reported that his older brother “collapsed from hunger.”

Even though these journalists receive monthly payments from AFP, the salaries barely or do not at all cover the soaring market prices. The banking system has collapsed, and the intermediaries who transfer money into Gaza take commissions as high as 40%.

AFP cannot provide equipment or even fuel so they can travel for work. Traveling by car means risking becoming a target of Israeli drones so they walk or use donkey carts.

Ahlem, based in the south of Gaza, says she’s trying to “keep bearing witness” for as long as she can:
“Every time I leave the tent to cover an event, interview someone, or document a scene I don’t know if I’ll come back alive.”
Her biggest struggle, she says, is finding food and water.

We are watching them collapse.
They are young, but their strength is fading. Most can no longer move around Gaza to report. Their pleas for help have become a daily cry torn, desperate messages.

In recent days, their notes have grown shorter and weaker they no longer have the strength to even send us updates."

Holding up cardboard signs and "disrupting the arms trade" with strikes and protests is now considered terrorism in the UK. Of course this law has nothing to do with the action of holding up cardboard signs, it has everything to do with the message that is written on them, that you oppose genocide and stand with Palestine for independence and sovereignty from military occupation.

Terrorism is a serious offense, for which Canada has considered (under Conservative governments, of course) stripping citizenship for. It should not be applied to holding up cardboard signs with "the wrong message".

This is a commonality of all authoritarian anti-protest legislation. Just like how Alberta has made it illegal to "block infrastructure" in protest as long as you're blocking oil corporations on Indigenous treaty land to force them to uphold their legal responsibility to consultation with Indigenous leaders, but not if you're white owner/operators in multi-million dollar trucks blocking a quarter billion dollars worth of trade for divisive politics, stockpiling assault weapons to use against the RCMP.

It has nothing to do with the fact that you're protesting or HOW you're protesting, but everything to do with WHO you're protesting or WHAT you're protesting for.

Passersby condemned the arrests as police intervened in the demonstration at around noon local time (11:00 GMT).

'Israel’s Manufactured “Looting Crisis”

Last November, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported the Israeli military was “allowing gangs in Gaza to loot aid trucks and extort protection fees from drivers.” Those looters were charging each truck a “protection fee” of $4,000 or taking over entire trucks and selling the aid in black markets.

Remarkably, the looting was happening at gunpoint while Israeli tanks and soldiers were positioned just dozens of meters away. Those troops usually shoot to kill upon the first sight of any Palestinian that comes within their scope, let alone stand in front of them with weapons.

Haaretz reported that Israel claims it refrained from action against those gangs “due to concern that harm to aid workers could provoke international criticism.” But in fact, Israel consistently bombed those same types of aid convoys on multiple occasions whenever local police or even unarmed volunteers carrying sticks approached to prevent looting. Cindy McCain, the World Food Program chief, has condemned Israel on multiple occasions for firing at or bombing aid convoys.

“It is clear there is collaboration between [the looting gangs] and Israeli authorities,” said Ayed Abu Ramadan, the chairman of Gaza’s Chamber of Commerce.

“Israel bombs anyone that gets close to the borders with weapons or even a stick, except for those gangs. They stop and loot trucks, then take cover in areas near the border and receive protection from the Israelis,” he told me.

Even more astonishing, according to an internal UN memo obtained by the Washington Post, these looting gangs established military compounds from where they launch attacks on trucks and reportedly set up warehouses with forklifts to unload looted truckloads and horde giant quantities of looted aid to drive prices up before selling some at astronomical prices. Those very warehouses are in Rafah, which the Israeli military has fully depopulated and rendered an extermination and destruction zone, meaning any Palestinian who attempts to enter is killed or kidnapped. Israel never raided or bombed Abu Shabab’s compound, prompting the UN memo to accuse Israel of providing “active or passive protection” to this gang.

An Open Letter to BBC Management, Written by BBC Journalists and Signed by Media Industry Professionals

A message to the BBC Director General, the Board of Governors and our BBC Colleagues.

We’re writing to express our concerns over opaque editorial decisions and censorship at the BBC on the reporting of Israel/Palestine. We believe the refusal to broadcast the documentary ‘Gaza: Medics Under Fire’ is just one in a long line of agenda driven decisions. It demonstrates, once again, that the BBC is not reporting “without fear or favour” when it comes to Israel.

We understand that a decision not to broadcast the investigation has been taken by senior BBC management despite the film’s content being signed off in accordance with BBC guidelines and editorial policy. This appears to be a political decision and is not reflective of the journalism in the film. A recent statement from the BBC said broadcasting the film “risked creating the perception of partiality".This illustrates precisely what many of us have experienced first hand: an organisation that is crippled by the fear of being perceived as critical of the Israeli government.

We are not asking the BBC to take a side. We are asking to be allowed to do our jobs in delivering facts transparently and with due context. For many of us, our efforts have been frustrated by opaque decisions made at senior levels of the BBC without discussion or explanation. Our failures impact audiences. As an organisation we have not offered any significant analysis of the UK government's involvement in the war on Palestinians. We have failed to report on weapons sales or their legal implications. These stories have instead been broken by the BBC’s competitors.

This hasn’t happened by accident, rather by design. Much of the BBC’s coverage in this area is defined by anti-Palestinian racism. The inconsistent manner in which guidance is applied draws into focus the role of Sir Robbie Gibb, on the BBC Board and BBC’s Editorial Standards Committee. We are concerned that an individual with close ties to the Jewish Chronicle, an outlet that has repeatedly published anti-Palestinian and often racist content, has a say in the BBC's editorial decisions in any capacity, including the decision not to broadcast ‘Gaza: Medics Under Fire’.

This conflict of interest highlights a double standard for BBC content makers who have themselves experienced censorship in the name of ‘impartiality’. In some instances staff have been accused of having an agenda because they have posted news articles critical of the Israeli government on their social media. By comparison, Gibb remains in an influential post with little transparency regarding his decisions despite his ideological leanings being well known. We can no longer ask license fee payers to overlook Gibbs’ ideological allegiances.

Since October 2023 it has become increasingly clear to our audiences that the BBC’s reporting on Israel / Palestine falls short of our own editorial standards. There is a gulf between the BBC’s coverage of what is happening in Gaza and the West Bank and what our audiences can see is happening via multiple credible sources including human rights organisations, staff at the UN and journalists on the ground. Whilst there has been some exceptional content from some areas of the BBC (within documentary and from some individual correspondents for example), news in particular has failed to report the reality and the context of the war on Palestinians. All too often it has felt that the BBC has been performing PR for the Israeli government and military. This should be a cause of great shame and concern for everyone at the BBC.

Despite these failings, there has been a major shift within public discourse in recent months. Increasingly the scale of Israel's crimes against the Palestinians are being understood by the public as well as many of our parliamentarians. The BBC’s editorial decisions seem increasingly out of step with reality. We have been forced to conclude that decisions are made to fit a political agenda rather than serve the needs of audiences. As industry insiders and as BBC staff, we have experienced this first hand. The issue has become even more urgent with recent escalations in the region. Again, BBC coverage has appeared to downplay Israel's role, reinforcing an ‘Israel first’ framing that compromises our credibility.

We, the undersigned BBC staff, freelancers and industry figures are extremely concerned that the BBC’s reporting on Israel and Palestine continues to fall short of the standards our audiences expect. We believe the role of Robbie Gibb, both on the Board, and as part of the Editorial Standards Committee, is untenable. We call on the BBC to do better for our audiences and recommit to our values of impartiality, honesty and reporting without fear or favour.

It was also signed by 300 other journalists and media professionals: one of them was yours truly. The BBC employees, as you would expect, are all anonymous, because otherwise they would face grave consequences to their careers.

The letter says:

Two caveats: 1) This is for NYC where people ALREADY rely on public transit. In a transit-dead city like #yeg, the increase in ridership would reduce automobile traffic much more, which would have a drastic effect on road congestion.

And 2) The difference in travel rate gained by all-door boarding has already been reduced significantly by the introduction of tap cards. The 12% figure you see here accounts for that reduction, otherwise it would have been 22%. Tapping still takes time though, and eliminating that fare would be significant, but even more significant would be the removal of front-door entry restrictions caused by fare payment.

Both these factors of increased travel speed and fare elimination would increase ridership greatly, but would also fund a much more robust public transit system and make it much more reliable and safer in every other way. More ridership would remove all the barriers of unreliability and drive out undesirable elements that make riders feel unsafe. The net benefit to all, whether they use transit or not, is a massive reduction in our public infrastructure costs which are strained by the inefficient use of automobiles, insane traffic congestion, and absolutely unacceptable levels of danger to survive in the city with all the automobile traffic.

It doesn't matter how you personally get around, EVERYONE will benefit from increased transit ridership, whether you're a parent who wants to survive a walk with kids to school, a cyclist who wants to survive commuting to work, an elderly person who wants to survive walking to the grocery store, a transit rider, OR an automobile driver who wants to get somewhere instead of being stuck in all the traffic caused by unnecessary car use!

Okay, so this is what happened to me tonight. On my way home I needed to stop at a neighbor's house. I approached the address and signaled to turn off to the left, into the nearest drive. I couldn't because this Ram Limited with Blackout Appearance Package (I used to make car ads, so I know these models by sight) is bearing down on me from behind and won't let me slow down or turn off. I'm frantically signalling left, but it turns out this moron doesn't even know what a hand signal is (yes, he actually said that!), and he keeps trying to push me forward with his truck, then tries to wedge his truck to my left where my outstretched arm is signalling.

I finally get off into the parking lane and he rolls down his window screaming at me that I'm "in the middle of the road!" and both him and the woman with him scream at me that "You're supposed to be on the side!" Now I must stress that this is a single lane residential road. There's "the lane" and there's parked cars. There is no "on the side" lane for bicycles to use. He just felt that my very presence in the lane meant he could run me out of it.

I tell him that I've been signalling left and show him my outstretched arm, so he says, "What is that? I don't know what that means! You're just an idiot on a bike!" then "Riding a bike is easy, any idiot can do it!"

How does he go straight from "I don't even know what a hand signal is" to "people on bicycles are idiots!"

He repeated this "idiot on a bike" accusation over and over, insisting that it's perfectly okay to hit me because I'm an idiot on a bike and signals on a bicycle aren't a real thing.

Then after telling me to get off the public road he approached me and threatened to take me out or put me down, while puffing out his chest in my face with his hands by his side in order to intimidate me while claiming to not be the instigator (typical angry white man move).

Edited to clarify: Hand signals are in the driver's manual in Alberta and are potential questions on the driver's exam. Always have been. This is "requisite knowledge" for getting a driver's license.

You also can't leave a hand signal on by accident, and you really have to bend over backwards to ignore one.

And not knowing that other vehicles can use the same road you do? I don't think they even considered a need to test people on that knowledge.

The problem is if they charge you 50 cents more for fries they won't be able to let go of that extra profit and release the funds back to the workers. They see profit and keep it. The only time they will give any of it to the workers is when they are forced to. As such, the only way workers can retain a living wage is through unionization and collective labour action. And the only way we can maintain our rights to job action and union activity, is by keeping union busters out of our government (which in Canada means no Conservatives).

There is more than enough profit going around for them to give a sliver of it to the people who make it. They don't need any more profit to treat workers fairly, they simply choose not to. You will never get any more of the pie by making more pie.

"We can always tell" used to be a form of hate speech against a tiny group of marginalized people, indicating that they can tell if you are "a boy or a girl".

Now the same hateful ideology has expanded to cover large swaths of the American population, indicating that "they can always tell" who's an "illegal" by the way they look, leading to Indigenous First Nations people being deported from their homeland as Mexican immigrants, and tattoo artists being labeled as gang members, and therefore "terrorists", for their skin art.

This expansion of hateful ideology of course, should come as no surprise to anyone. That is why you cannot allow hate to live, no matter if it affects you or not. Soon enough, it'll hit your friends, your family, and yourself.
