Then there are those who find blockchain fascinating in general but dismiss Bitcoin as outdated, claiming it will soon be replaced by a new cryptocurrency (often one controlled by the very author making the argument). Let’s take a moment to consider why Bitcoin is interesting and how it can drive broad societal change, much like the hippie movement once did. <br/>Bitcoin is a global decentralized monetary system operating on a peer-to-peer network. Since nearly all of humanity lives within an economic system based on money, it’s easy to see how an overhaul of the financial system could have a profound impact across different aspects of society. Bitcoin differs from traditional money through several unique characteristics: it is scarce, neutral, decentralized, and completely permissionless. There is no central entity—such as a company—that develops and markets Bitcoin, meaning it cannot be corrupted.<br/><br/>Bitcoin is an open digital network, much like the internet. Due to its lack of a central governing entity and its organic origin, Bitcoin can be considered a commodity, whereas other cryptocurrencies resemble securities, comparable to stocks. Bitcoin’s decentralized nature makes it geopolitically neutral. Instead of being controlled by a central authority, it operates under predefined, unchangeable rules. This keeps Bitcoin neutral as a protocol, meaning a set of rules without leaders. It is not governed in the same way a company is, where ownership of shares dictates control. Miners earn the right to record transactions in Bitcoin’s ledger by continuously proving that they have performed work to obtain that right. This proof-of-work algorithm is also one reason why Bitcoin has spread so organically. If recording new transactions were free, we would face a problem similar to spam: there would be an endless number of competing transactions, making it impossible to reach consensus on which should officially become part of the decentralized ledger. Mining can be seen as an auction for adding the next set of transactions, where the price is the amount of energy expended. Using energy for this purpose is the only way to ensure that mining remains globally decentralized while keeping the system open and permissionless—free from human interference. Bitcoin’s initial distribution was driven by random tech enthusiasts around the world who mined it as a hobby, using student electricity from their bedrooms. This is why Bitcoin’s spread can be considered organic, in contrast to a scenario where it was created by a precisely organized inner circle that typically would have granted itself advantages before the launch.<br/><br/>If energy consumption is considered concerning, the best regulatory approach would be to create optimal conditions for mining in Finland, where over half of energy production already comes from renewable sources. Modern miners are essentially datacenters, but they have a unique characteristic: they can adjust their electricity consumption seamlessly and instantly without delay. This creates synergy with renewable energy production, which often experiences fluctuations in supply. The demand flexibility offered by miners provides strong incentives to invest increasingly in renewable energy facilities. Miners can commit to long-term projects as last-resort consumers, making investments in renewables more predictable and profitable. Additionally, like other datacenters, miners produce heat as a byproduct. As a thought experiment, they could also be considered heating plants, with a secondary function of securing the Bitcoin network. In Finland, heat is naturally needed year-round. This combination of grid balancing and waste heat recovery would be key to Europe&#39;s energy self-sufficiency. Wouldn&#39;t it be great if the need to bow to fossil fuel powers for energy could be eliminated? Unfortunately, the current government has demonstrated a lack of understanding of these positive externalities by proposing tax increases on electricity.<br/>The so-called fiat monetary system also deserves criticism in Western nations, even though its flaws are not as immediately obvious as elsewhere. It is the current financial system in which certain privileged entities control the issuance of money as if by divine decree, which is what the term fiat (command) refers to. The system subtly creates and maintains inequality.<br/><br/>The Cantillon effect is an economic phenomenon in which entities closer to newly created money benefit at the expense of those farther away. Access to the money creation process is determined by credit ratings and loan terms, as fiat money is always debt. The Cantillon effect is a distorted version of the trickle-down theory, where the loss of purchasing power in a common currency gradually moves downward. Due to inflation, hard assets such as real estate, precious metals, and stocks become more expensive, just as food prices rise in stores. This process further enriches the wealthy while deepening poverty. The entire wealth of lower-income individuals is often held in cash or savings, which are eroded by inflation much like a borrowed bottle of Leijona liquor left out too long. Inflation is usually attributed to a specific crisis, but over the long term (spanning decades), monetary inflation—the expansion of the money supply—plays a significant role. Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman, known for his work on currencies, describes inflation in his book The Accidental Theorist as follows, loosely quoted:<br/>&#34;It is really, really difficult to cut nominal wages. Even with low inflation, making labor cheaper would require a large portion of workers to accept wage cuts. This follows the exact same pattern, just on a larger scale. The Human Rights Foundation (hrf.org) has explored the interconnection between the fiat monetary system and neocolonialism in its publications, advocating for Bitcoin as part of the solution.<br/>Inflation can also be criticized from an environmental perspective. Since it raises time preference, it encourages people to make purchases sooner rather than delay them. As Krugman put it in the same book, “Extra money burns in your pocket.” Inflation thus drives consumption while reducing deliberation—it’s the fuel of the economy. If the goal from an environmental standpoint is to moderate economic activity, the first step should be to stop adding fuel to the fire. The impact of inflation on intergenerational inequality and the economic uncertainty faced by younger generations is rarely discussed. Boomers have benefited from the positive effects of the trend sparked by the Nixon shock in 1971, such as wealth accumulation in real estate and inflation-driven economic booms. Zoomers, meanwhile, are left to either fix the problems of the current system or find themselves searching for a lifeboat.<br/><br/>Bitcoin emerged as part of a long developmental continuum within the discussion forums of rebellious programmers known as cypherpunks, or encryption activists. It is an integral part of internet history and specifically a counterculture movement. Around Bitcoin, grassroots activists and self-organized communities still thrive, fostering an atmosphere that is welcoming, inspiring, and—above all—hopeful, which feels rare in today’s world. Although the rush of suits and traditional financial giants into Bitcoin through ETF funds a year ago may have painted it as opportunistic and dull in the headlines, delving into its history and culture reveals ever-fascinating angles and new layers within the Bitcoin sphere.<br/>Yet, at its core, Bitcoin is simply money. It possesses all seven characteristics required to meet the definition of money: it is easily divisible, transferable, recognizable, durable, fungible, uniform, and straightforward to receive. It serves as a foundation on which coders, startup enthusiasts, politicians, financial executives, activists, and anarchists alike can build. The only truly common denominator among the broad spectrum of Bitcoin users is curiosity—openness to new ideas. But are extreme exactly because those people are living inside a bubble and reject to see the reality. My views are literally the pin that explode that bubble and show them the real world. Some are opening their eyes, some are still lost in the new space and some are desperately looking for another bubble to get in, because the real world is so scary for them that is impossible to live in.<br/><br/>The following reasons why I decided to not post anymore on SN:<br/><br/>1. The rewards system on SN became dangerously an “assmilking” system and the founders/maintainers still keep it in place and encourage it.<br/>Yes, it was nice in the beginning to attract more people to post content. But this reward system is flawed: for more you reward – more trash content you get. More trash content – less good discussions you get.<br/>I know, is very hard to maintain that balance between reward good content and remove the trash without censoring.<br/>But the amount of bots, AI content, shitcoineries and garbage makes it almost impossible to have good discussions about things that MATTER. Sometimes you miss good posts just because there’s too much garbage.<br/><br/>2. SN is a good alternative to reddit r/Bitcoin but lately with the new “territories” became a new shity reddit. Instead of leaving all the garbage on reddit, SN brings all the garbage from reddit to SN.<br/>SN is far superior to reddit, but it got too high expectations. I don’t know maybe are some other “higher interests” behind the scenes, some VCs are pushing another agenda, but SN is not anymore that niche platform “Bitcoin only”. And is sad to see it how slowly is shitcoinized.<br/>I thought SN will became a kind of new substack too, but it failed. It became just another crap reddit.<br/>Bitcoin needs a STRONG platform to keep high values of Bitcoin maximalism. We are at media war with all the shitcoining garbage and many people still don’t want to see it.<br/>Maximalism = purity and defence against idiocy of shitcoiners.<br/><br/>3. Another particular reason is that I don’t want to became an “influencer” on SN. My ONLY mission is to speak truth about Bitcoin and Sovereignty. I do not want fame, I do not want sats, I do not want dumb followers.<br/>I want people to read and pay attention to all my words, because each word I said on SN is pure truth and wisdom. Each post and comment I’ve done, have true meanings and you need to read them twice to really understand them. And yes, I didn’t delete any of my posts/comments. There have been many good days, like when I introduced Coracle to the nostr telegram group, or when I got my fellowship with FUTO, or when I got my grant from OpenSats, or when I got to speak at Nostrasia. But in terms of realizing the vision I&#39;ve had for the software - for over two years - today is the day.</p> <p>Coracle now has private groups.</p> <p>This means you can now send almost any nostr event over an encrypted channel to the rest of the group&#39;s members. This is substantially different from group chats, in that it uses rotating shared keys to provide weak forward secrecy, better scaling, and dynamic member access. This more closely approximates one of the most popular social media products in existence - The Nostr is now a direct competitor of The Facebook.</p> <p>I built this for my community. I wanted something &#34;good enough&#34; to entice people to leave the advertising-fueled surveillance honeypot that is Facebook. In order to work, it needed to at least support notes, events, and marketplace listings. Although support is still quite basic, Coracle has checked all three of these boxes.</p> <p>Before I get into the details though, it&#39;s important to mention that these groups should not be considered &#34;private&#34; any more than Facebook groups or Mastodon servers are (although privacy is substantially better). A better analog might be WeChat, which uses encryption with the same set of trade-offs. So don&#39;t post anything to private groups that might get you in trouble!</p> <p>With that said, it&#39;s possible to run a highly private group. The backbone of this spec is e2e encryption, but relay selection can play an important part in hiding metadata from the rest of the network. If you have a relay you trust to protect notes and not share metadata, your security is significantly increased.</p> <h1 id="prior-art-2">Prior art</h1> <p>Nostr-compatible group products aren&#39;t a totally novel thing, as it turns out. In fact draft <a href="https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/580/files">NIP 112</a> has been around since June, and is already implemented in <a href="https://arcade.city/">ArcadeCity</a>. So why am I creating a new standard? I&#39;l get into the positive benefits of my approach more below, but the quick answers are:</p> <ul> <li>The new <a href="https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/746">encryption standard</a> is going to break compatibility anyway. If we can end up with a better spec, now is the time.</li> <li>ArcadeCity development seems to have stalled.</li> <li>NIP-72 communities already have a ton of traction, and match what I&#39;m trying to achieve with encrypted channels.</li> </ul> <p>Of course I&#39;m highly indebted to the project, the design of which is still visible in my final design.</p> <p>Another product that exists to do something similar in a nostr-compatible way is Soapbox by Alex Gleason. This is a great project, particularly since his Mostr project bridges the ActivityPub world and Nostr. ActivityPub works well for highly centralized communities, but the architecture suffers from this centralization too. In particular, not even DMs are e2e encrypted, and just like regular notes are protected only by authentication enforced by servers.</p> <p>Finally, there&#39;s NIP 29, which is fiatjaf&#39;s competing groups project. This has some interesting properties, for example the ability to &#34;fork&#34; a group by linking events together. However, similar to ActivityPub it relies exclusively on relays to protect user privacy, and in a fairly non-standard way. You do get to take advantage of nostr&#39;s multi-master architecture though, and signatures are also stripped from events in order to discourage propagation through the network.</p> <p>None of these solutions quite satisfied me, so I built my own.</p> <h1 id="how-it-works-2">How it works</h1> <p>One of the coolest things about a NIP 72 community-based group spec is that is supports a spectrum of privacy requirements. A group admin might choose to publish group metadata privately so that it&#39;s only visible to the group, publicly so that other people can find the group and ask to join, or leave off a private component entirely.</p> <p>Likewise, since private groups are backwards-compatible with public communities, it&#39;s easy to add a private component to existing groups. This can be useful especially for groups run by a business or content publisher, since public exposure is a good thing but certain group members might have more or less access. This could be used to support a patreon-type model, automating group membership based on subscription tier, for example.</p> <p>An important aspect of the design that makes automation possible is the concept of a dedicated administration key. By decoupling this key from the original creator of the group, ownership can be shared as simply as sharing the key. This allows multiple admins to manage the group simultaneously either manually or using automations built into the group relays or special purpose bot-clients.</p> <p>This of course raises the issue of admin access revocation, which isn&#39;t possible - that is, until we have a solution for key rotation for normal accounts. Once that&#39;s in place, the same process can be used to rotate group admin keys.</p> <p>In the meantime, it&#39;s also trivial to reduce the exposure an admin key gets. You wouldn&#39;t generally want to simply paste the key wherever it&#39;s needed, but luckily that problem has already been solved as well. Instead of giving every admin or admin bot the key, it&#39;s trivial to set up an nsecbunker that authorizes each admin client - and can revoke access as needed.</p> <p>This level of administration is of course fairly complex, but I think it&#39;s important to think through the requirements businesses and other advanced users will eventually impose and anticipate them as we&#39;re able, not through over-engineering, but through simple concepts that can be reused.</p> <p>One other neat feature of this NIP is the definition of invite codes, which are essential for running a private group at any kind of scale. When requesting access to a group, a user can send along a &#34;claim&#34;, which can be anything - for example a static invite code, a payment receipt, or an explanation of why they want to join. This claim can be validated by hand by a human, or processed by a bot to instantly admit the new member to the group.</p> <p>When a new member is admitted to the group, the admin can either share an existing access key with them, or they can rotate the key for the entire group. If relays expire access keys after a certain amount of time, this can create a weak form of forward secrecy, where attackers won&#39;t be able to access old content, even if they gain access to the admin key.</p> <h1 id="limitations-and-future-work-2">Limitations and Future Work</h1> <p>The bar for new nostr clients has risen significantly since I first put Coracle out there. The new groups component is far more mature than Coracle was for much of its early life, but it has its rough edges. Many of these just need to be smoothed out through further UX work, but some are more technical in nature.</p> <ul> <li>The groups spec relies on NIP 44, which isn&#39;t yet available in most signer extensions. That means that unless you log in with your private key (please don&#39;t), you won&#39;t be able to create or gain access to any private groups.</li> <li>Hybrid groups (public groups with a private area) aren&#39;t really tested yet, or fully supported in Coracle&#39;s UI. It&#39;s an open question whether this is even a good idea, since it becomes pretty hard for users to know if they&#39;re posting publicly or privately in every context.</li> <li>Moderation is not implemented, so if you&#39;re creating a public group there is currently no way in Coracle to approve posts. Also, groups created in Coracle don&#39;t show up in Satellite for some reason — this is something I&#39;ll be working on improving.</li> <li>Whether this approach actually scales is another question. It&#39;s very hard to build member lists of hundreds of thousands of people, and without a relay helping to filter events, it might become prohibitively expensive to download and analyze all the events posted to a group. We&#39;ll see what develops as the design matures and the implementation undergoes stress testing.</li> </ul> <h1 id="conclusion-2">Conclusion</h1> <p>Something I like about both nostr and bitcoin is that it empowers the users of the software. The corollary of this of course is that it&#39;s important to exercise this power with care - real damage can be done with this group spec, just as real damage can be done to bitcoin holders through low entropy key generation or poor key handling practices. So please, if you&#39;re going to implement this spec, communicate clearly with your users its limitations, and encourage them to run their own relays.</p> <p>Nevertheless, I am stoked to be another 1% closer to my goal of helping my community - and anyone else who uses nostr - to exercise individual sovereignty and protect their freedom and privacy.
