A good read for the morning. I love how it's also in the same way I'm looking at things these days after using Nostr. One more step towards freedom

quoting
naddr1qq…06yu

When the internet goes down, a lot goes down with it. All communication grinds to a halt. And communication entails more than WhatsApp, TikTok and other brainrot-catalyst apps. It is about getting in the new order for tomorrow's groceries that will await you fresh 'n green. It's about getting the truck-driver at the right loading-dock to pick up that load, and give him the right delivery address. It's his navigation to even get there. It's the Fuel-pump payment terminal to get him the gas to do it. And (nowadays), it's your good night's sleep.

F*cked would be an understatement to say the least. Now imagine that when the internet goes down, we simply...

...wouldn't care?

What if we can live in a way where we wouldn't even notice that the internet is down. That's what I want to talk about with you today.

The first two pillars

I want you to think about the physical location of data. Now what does that mean? I mean the physical location where a copy of data exists.

On the normal internet, this data is in a central data centre somewhere far away. When you visit a site, you pick up that data, it gets displayed on your browser, and discarded when you close the page.

This is a very wasteful and fragile model. If you visit the same page, and try to find the same information again, the whole circus starts all over, to once again throw away the data at the end. This means that you're incredibly dependent on all parts remaining accessible. Which we know isn't always the case.

Compare this to processes in nature, like a tree that gathers nutrients. A tree doesn't send out something to go to the roots and pick up a nutrient, go back, and deliver the nutrient. Go out and fetch, go out and fetch, and so on... Instead, a tree has liquids that flow up and bring along nutrients as they are needed, after which it travels down with (waste) products that go back into the soil. It's a continuous flow, with no start and no end.

This is exactly the model that's possible with Nostr and Blossom. Because the data integrity can be validated from the data itself, the data can flow freely. And since it's data, these flows can be filtered and duplicated at any point.

If that sounds a bit woowoo, let me give you an example: I go to a friend's profile on a Nostr social app and I load their posts, including the images, which are Blossom files. At that very moment I tap into an existing flow of data somewhere on a far-away relay & blossom server and filter it to my liking. But unlike the go-and-fetch model, the data is now physically replicated on my device. This means that the connection to that far-away relay is never again needed for this same information to propagate.

Let me repeat that:
After receiving data from a far-away relay, that same connection is NEVER AGAIN needed for the same information to propagate.

Now that this data exists in my local community, ANYONE in need of this information can retrieve it from me rather than the far-away place.

THIS is what makes Nostr + Blossom so incredibly potent. Though few seem to realize it.

The monetary pillars

Because Nostr/Blossom are free of any interpretation of the data, we can transport anything with the model described above. AKA: relays don't care if it's a social media post or some event that makes a doorbell ring.

So, for example, this model can be used for propagating websites with nsite as well. Now anyone in my community can view a website that I've already collected from the other side of the world once.

I want to sketch a scenario here:

Let's say the internet is down and this (nsite) website happens to be a webshop for a local bakery. I've visited the webshop before, and just by doing that this data has already been propagated to my devices.

This means that anyone in my community can get this data from me, rather than from that connection to far away that's now unavailable.
My neighbour who's a carpenter now loads the site and products by getting it from me, selects what he needs and goes to check-out.

Now we're stuck with a problem, because we can't pay without an internet connection. Except... we actually can. With Bitcoin Cashu mints. And not with fancy token-locking, but because our community has its own Cashu mint that continues to be accessible within the bounds of our local network.

Yes, we can't make bitcoin payments OUTSIDE our community as the internet went down, but we can definitely keep circulating the value that is already present within the community. Which accounts for MOST economic activity that we need to survive.

My neighbour can order his bread for later pick-up. I can pay him for that job he did for me the other day from the sats I have of this local mint.

Then, whenever the wider internet returns, we all pay in/out of the mint as we desire. I might top-up because I net spent and the bakery might cash out over lightning to pay their supplier for next week's flour.

Foundation for propagation

But, one huge problem remains... The internet's architecture doesn't support this organic flow of information. It is structured in a way that is too rigid to support a flow so organic, between parts that move around in physical space. The foundations are rattling and about to crumble...

It's not strange that it evolved this way, the great minds behind TCP/IP and adjacent protocols couldn't have designed for this world of flowing, self-validating data, as the tools we have at our disposal now simply didn't exist yet.

But we can't keep using a hammer now that we have screws. The tools may look similar and have similar goals. Yet, they're fundamentally different.

Many projects have come and gone that tried to create this new foundation, but never seemed to put all the parts in at once. Focussing on the reinforced concrete, but built on unstable ground. Or put in the pile foundation, but neglect the reinforced concrete. All these genuinely want to build a beautiful structure, but you need to get the touch-points between earth, foundation and structure exactly right.

In internet-land that means that we can't throw away 4+ decades of TCP/IP libraries for a new protocol. We have to be 100% compatible with the existing IP stack. You can't build a protocol and rebuild everything from the ping application up to Minecraft.

At the same time, we can't build on top of IP itself either, inheriting all its limitations. But, we won't get anywhere without fully supporting it either. It's a fine line and hard to get right, but I think FIPS has a good shot at making it work.

The harmonious hand-off

The key is in the touch points on top, where applications interface with the networking stack. And the earth, where the networking stack interfaces with the physical world.

Structure & foundation

This is the intersection where the pillars rest on their foundation. We can't require the whole structure to be designed around the foundation, it should just expect a sturdy footing.

Cashu mints, Nostr relays and Blossom servers currently rely on DNS as their de-facto identity, it's not truly theirs. An npub is. However, the system already exists, current tools expect a domain name. FIPS won't fight this fact, but interoperates with it. Npubs as domain names cover this gap, owning their identity, zero code changes.

Not forever, but as an in-road, possibly for decades, but it must be in place to invite the transition to Free Internetworking.

Foundation & Earth

The foundation & earth connection is the interface between FIPS and physical transport, which can be any medium and should be many of them at once. A good spider-web is attached at many places, a leaf, a piece of bark and a branch. Any of which can fail for its own reasons, amounting to a mere nuisance when it happens. No catastrophic failures like an interrupted network today.

In practical terms this means a network where fiber, Bluetooth and Serial all become your carriers, regardless of the application, or type of data. No application should be bothered with how Bluetooth transport works. And no Bluetooth transport implementation should care what application is using its link.

In closing

We're in a huge paradigm shift of data propagation, in a way we've never done, on a scale we've never seen. And with that scale I mean a scale so small that we tend to overlook it. A resilient internet is not one with huge backbone gateways, hyperscale compute clusters and fiber lines. It's a messy interplay of small relays, mints and Blossom blobs hopping over crappy links in all directions, right to where it needs to be. It is a network that persists through power-cuts, human error and shutdowns. It's a network where Bluetooth, USB cables and MicroSD cards become your carriers. Data will flow no matter the circumstances, or the scale. You can dam a river, but not the rain.

-Arjen

The meshed internet:

FIPS is one of the coolest technologies I have ever seen in my life. I love it more coz of the future where we all can run our own internet without someone else controlling anything. the possibilities are really really cool. It feels like iroh but aimed at public internet usage.

Check out the project and start thinking stuffs in a new better POV

#fips #nostr #internet #mesh

quoting
naddr1qq…cqe0

A new FIPS release is out! v0.5.3 is mostly about making your node harder to mess with. If you run FIPS on an OpenWrt router, the router's own services are no longer open to the whole mesh. If you run a gateway, only your LAN can use it. And wherever you run FIPS, someone who can see or inject traffic has far fewer ways to knock over your links or keep you from finding peers. On top of that, you can now pull FIPS into a Rust project straight from crates.io.

Nothing changes on the wire: you can upgrade one node at a time and a mixed mesh keeps working. Every node should upgrade. If you run FIPS on OpenWrt, run the gateway, or run FIPS on Windows, there is something to check before you upgrade; it's called out below.

If you skipped v0.5.1 and v0.5.2: v0.5.1 made the Linux packages start again on Debian 12 and Ubuntu 22.04, and v0.5.2 brought a first round of security fixes and changed defaults. Upgrading to v0.5.3 gets you all of it.

Notable Contributions

Johnathan Corgan - @jmcorgan.

Johnathan shepherded the release and did the bulk of the security work: the firewall zones, the gateway hardening, the DNS fixes and the handshake and discovery hardening described below.

He also fixed link rekeys that stalled when a message was lost, and renamed the Rust package to
fips-mesh
so it could be published on crates.io.

Arjen - @Origami74.

Arjen fixed a crossed BLE handshake that closed the shared link (#179), a session that went dark after losing its route (#185) and the 32-bit Android build (#191).

He made the OpenWrt services respawn without limit (#188), the systemd units back off between restarts (#190), and
fips
refuse a config file that configures nothing (#186).

He also reported the receive-loop stall on TCP connections (#176) and wrote a how-to on reachability (#189).

Martti Malmi - @mmalmi.

Martti fixed a socket leak in the Ethernet transport (#171), made TCP try a hostname's remaining addresses after a failed connect (#172), added back-off on UDP receive errors (#174) and made the gateway retry failed firewall rebuilds (#175).

Logen - @btcforplebs.

Logen found that a Nostr NAT traversal could stall when both peers dialled at the same time and one offer got lost (#181), and fixed it too (#183).

What's in v0.5.3

Your OpenWrt router is no longer open to the mesh

Until now, every FIPS peer could reach your router's LuCI, SSH and DNS, because
fips0
sat in the
lan
zone. After the upgrade,
fips0
has its own default-deny
fips
zone: peers can ping the router and use the gateway's port forwards, and nothing else unless you open it with a
src fips
rule. Those same rules now let you restrict who can use a port forward.

If you run an 802.11s mesh, its interfaces now sit in a
fips_mesh
zone that blocks all IP traffic. FIPS peering over the mesh keeps working, since it uses raw Ethernet, not IP.

New in this release: OpenWrt 24.10 and 25.12 routers set up with
fips-mesh-setup
can now mesh with each other over 802.11s.

What to do: if you manage your router over FIPS, add a
src fips
rule for SSH (and LuCI, if you use it) before you upgrade, or you'll lock yourself out. If you reach routers over the mesh, upgrade them one at a time, farthest first, and restart
fips
after the network reload. On 2.4 GHz, OpenWrt 23.05 routers stop peering with upgraded 24.10+ routers unless those keep the old rates. The package README walks through it.

Your gateway serves your LAN, and only your LAN

If you run fips-gateway on a box with more than one network, such as a VPN, containers or VMs, those other networks could use your gateway's
.fips
mappings and its mesh identity. Now only hosts on
gateway.lan_interface
are served. A single LAN host can also no longer fill up your mapping table with names it never uses, and after a restart your gateway won't hand an address that clients may still have cached to a different name.

How you're affected: VPN clients, containers and VMs on the gateway host that reached
.fips
names through it lose that access, and there is no setting to serve a second interface. If your
lan_interface
is a VLAN on a bridge, read the bridge netfilter note in the release notes before upgrading. A
/128
pool now stops the gateway at start, so widen it first.

Your links are harder to knock over

Someone who could see or inject traffic between you and your peers had a number of ways to disrupt you without ever breaking the cryptography: replaying an old rekey message to stop your key rotation, sending one forged packet to end a dial, tearing down a link with frames that don't decrypt, or steering and starving discovery with forged lookups,
PathBroken
signals, floods of Nostr adverts or spoofed LAN adverts. Nearby BLE or Ethernet neighbours could also keep you from dialling a peer. All of those are closed. No key material was ever exposed, and handshake keys are now wiped from memory once they're no longer needed.

Your DNS responder also no longer answers forged or non-query traffic, so it can't be abused as an amplifier, and the TLS library behind the Nostr relay connections picks up fixes for four advisories.

How you're affected: nothing to do but upgrade. One thing to know: against a peer still on v0.5.2 or older, recovering from a genuine key mismatch now takes the link-dead timeout (30 seconds by default) instead of twenty failed frames.

Your links stay healthy through rekeys

When a rekey reply got lost, a link could go up to two minutes without rekeying. Now it completes on the next resend. Link quality no longer freezes after a rekey, so your node keeps choosing good paths and parents, and a session that loses its route looks the destination up again instead of going dark.

Embed FIPS straight from crates.io

You can now add FIPS to a Rust project from crates.io. The package is called
fips-mesh
, since the name
fips
was taken, but the library is still
fips
, so your code doesn't change:

[dependencies]
fips = { package = "fips-mesh", version = "0.5.3" }

If you build from a checkout and name the package in
cargo
commands,
-p fips
is now
-p fips-mesh
.
cargo install fips-mesh
gives you the binaries, but to run a node, use the packages: they bring the service units, config and DNS setup.

Platform-specific fixes

Linux: if
fips
or the gateway keeps failing to start, systemd now backs off instead of retrying every 5 seconds forever. A tarball upgrade brings
fips-dns
and
fips-gateway
back up, and removing the
.deb
no longer leaves
.fips
lookups hanging.

OpenWrt: a router that hits a run of failures at boot keeps retrying, instead of staying off the mesh until you restart it by hand.

macOS: forwarding no longer stops when one of the daemon's sending threads exits.

Windows: the installer stops rather than quietly bringing your node up under a new identity. If it stops, move your key as the upgrade notes describe.

FreeBSD:
.fips
names now resolve with pkg dnsmasq. After
pkg install
, run
service fips restart
.

Android: 32-bit builds (
armeabi-v7a
and
x86
) work again.

Everywhere: a config file that configures nothing now stops
fips
at start, instead of quietly starting a node with no transports. And if you run without
--config
, every
node.*
setting in the config files on the search path now applies, so check them for values you didn't mean to set.

Community

Unsure what FIPS can actually do? pw21 (npub1jss…fmzy) had FIPS on Intelligence Snacks episode 72, "The Internet We Deserve w. FIPS". It covers FIPS, Nostr, local-first agents and the end of API-key hell, plus a spicy detour into whether AI doom is safety... or cartel theatre. A great listen to get familiar with what FIPS makes possible.

Building on FIPS

Wingman over FIPS. Pete Winn's OtherStuffAI stack runs over FIPS: a Nostr-based web browser with a built-in signer for Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android; the Wingman Flight Deck, a Human+Agents multiplayer workspace, talking to its backend and self-hosted agent boxes over FIPS; FIPS Drive, for pulling files from a shared folder on another machine, with access whitelisted by npub; and a GitWorkshop fork serving a FIPS-only repo. No tunnels, no DNS, just Nostr IDs.

OceanSlim (OceanSlim (npub1zmc…7f60)) ran a Minecraft server over FIPS the day v0.5.0 came out, with FIPS doing the NAT traversal over relays, and followed it up with SFTP over FIPS.

Logen (Logen (npub1vxl…gnvx)) is building FIPS into Nostr Vault, so a relay hosted on an Android, macOS or iOS device is reachable directly at its npub, with no lookup and no middleman. He also published sovereign-dns for DNS over FIPS, and made a Curious Pair episode about FIPS.

FIPS to Reticulum bridge. fr34aky built a bridge between FIPS and Reticulum, connecting the FIPS mesh to the Reticulum network.

fips-initramfs. Johnathan released fips-initramfs, which unlocks a LUKS-encrypted server over the FIPS mesh from anywhere. No static IP, no port forwarding, no inbound reachability at all.

Elsewhere

SEC-08 report. The SEC-08 "YOLO++" report from Sovereign Engineering is out. Over six weeks in Madeira, participants explored mesh networking, payments and a multiplayer game in a single HTML file, ran FIPS over sound, and rebuilt Totem, a hardware mesh platform, on FIPS and napplets.

Thank you, testers

A big thank you to everyone in the community who has been running FIPS, testing it in the wild and raising issues. Real-world usage keeps surfacing things no lab test would, and a lot of the fixes in this release started with one of your reports.

Thank you franzap (npub1wf4…dgh9) for testing and reporting a batch of rough edges, several of which are fixed in this release: refusing a config file that configures nothing (#186), respawning the OpenWrt services without a retry limit (#188), a how-to for diagnosing reachability between nodes (#189) and backing off between systemd restarts (#190).

Getting v0.5.3

Everything is on the v0.5.3 release page:

Linux x86_64 / aarch64 —
.deb
and tarball

Arch Linux —
fips
from the AUR

macOS —
.pkg

From source —
cargo build --release
from a checkout of the v0.5.3 tag

v0.5.3 is wire-compatible with v0.5.x, so nodes can be upgraded in any order. Before upgrading, read the "Before you upgrade" and "Upgrade notes" sections of the release notes, especially on OpenWrt, the gateway and Windows.

Full release notes are on the release page, and the complete per-commit changelog is in CHANGELOG.md.

      Hi nostr people,
Yesterday in my local community online meetup. I introduced nostr to them by 40+ minutes talk.

Very very few audience. But people loved it and showed interest.

I was explaining them what is a signer and how nostr ecosystem use this very differently from others. Like how the clients don't even have any form of credentials and when u want to post something, they'll send it to the signer to sign it instead of clients signing themselves. This way the browser, clients no matter what is compromised will never have the keys exposed and only the signer will have to be protected. And even no keys are transmitted too.

People loved this kind of workflow and got curious about Nostr.

Please tell me if I have missed something or mentioned it wrong. Or much more cool info is there regarding signer methods.

#nostr #amber #signer #tamil #community #meetup

One of the coolest UX in #nostr apps is that even the client apps I use doesn't even have my login(pub and private keys). It asks a signer app to sign. This way I trust only the #signer and it's a really cool UX. No more #passwords etc. Btw, i use #amber in #Android as signer.
Why aren't we doing this for all platforms? This thing is really 🔥. I have been thinking this lately in my mind. And honestly it's just really really cool. We raise the bar as spammers raise the bar. Wonderful idea and usage to be honest.
I love Nostr 😀 more and more these days.

quoting
nevent1q…d45a
Creating an account on nostr is costless.. As is sending messages.

Imagine a future where spammers are using thousands of bots so send millions of messages.

Pow forces your phone to do a bit of work. For you it's a few seconds to post, no problem. For a spammers this can become hours or days of CPU time, not worth their time.

Currently we don't have a (major) spam issue on nostr so don't filter on pow.

However if everybody gets used to posting pow now, in the future it would be simple to filter VIEWING by pow.

We can filter in client. We can filter in relay to save bandwidth, we can have pow only relays that save on bandwidth and storage.

Personally I use lowest pow at the moment so posting is instant. If spammers start using a low pow value then I will keep increasing mine to stay above them. It will always be cheaper for me to have higher pow than a Spammer.

I'm planning first on posting a general Bird's eye view video covering all the possibilities and mental model of nix. And probably a separate video for NixOS other projects.

And then slowly I'll explain small to big stuffs and we'll do a lot of projects etc together I guess on the way.
#contentcreation

#ksv236

I'll also include various steps, best practices etc from day 0 to start using it.

Nix is the greatest tech IMO, but people think it's hard because there's not really good content which teaches them from various perspectives. #Developer, #DevOps, #IT #admin, #SysAdmin etc sees and uses it in different angles. That's how it works. But a single docs or video doesn't cover stuffs pertaining to them.

So I plan to cover this particular one and more and make #nix actually easy for people. Nix's scope is tons vast, but it's easy IMO

Let me get this journey strated and want all of your support and feedback so that I can improve on the way.

This is one of my ways of contributing to the community❤️

And we'll all grow together into a very cool problem solvers on the way.

      Long post.
Deep thought

If I ever say that I can win against a lion, everyone will mock.

But we are from a species , where we literally survived not just lion, but all those 100s of predators for 1000s of years without the modern science, proper education, or even basic necessities.

It's almost a miracle if you look at the big picture.

Why such a week beings like us survived this far and why not the stronger predators not ruling us.

Some other species also have unity, survival instincts etc in their nature.

So what makes us different? We aren't just surviving. We even developed a lot over the centuries from basic tools to rockets.

What exactly differentiates us?

We have a creative imagination. We imagine stuffs a lot. At the core this is also our survival and advancing skill.

When faced against a lion, we have few options :
1) either to accept the absolute fact that it's a stronger can't-win predator
2) fight for pride
3) FINDING A WAY

3 is the reason for us to survive and advance as a civilisation.

But when faced with an absolute fact how do we do 3? It's not an instinct on triggering a survival mechanism.

So how exactly?
To be DELUSIONAL

We first believe "we can" as a possibility and take action towards it.

One sees a bird and was delusional that he could fly. he created aeroplane.

One delusional thought that we can talk over long distance invented telephone.

So what's beyond delusion that they all had in common?

Trust in that delusion more than seeing it as a possibility, trust in the process, more than trust they loved doing that and topped it off with their determination.

To cut short:
To innovate, to change the world, to revolutionize all starts with some delusion. If u are delusional, u are great. So what's the cumulative order for satisfaction/ success / reaching a goal?

Delusion + Passion + Action + Observation + Determination + Consistency and repeat

The journey will be cruel yet fun at the same time depending on your perspective. The journey will satisfy the soul more than the boring end goal.

If delusion is worth 100 points, then
Passion is 10x, action is 1000x, determination is 100x and consistency is 10000000000x.

Start small, one step at a time if u feel things are hard.

This post is for those who struggle to get started with their dreams and also to my future self.

TLDR:

Being delusional opens more ways to be pragmatic if u take action for it and we humans often call it as INNOVATION.

Being weak means we find ways to do stuff which we might not think of if we are strong. Weakness is a boon for humanity

FLY HIGH

#ksv236
