With five, it starts to become chaos. With ten, it is a time bomb.<br/><br/>BIP85 is the answer the Bitcoin ecosystem took years to formalize. The idea is simple and powerful at the same time: instead of managing a collection of independent seeds, you generate them all from a single one. One master seed. The rest are derived from it in a mathematical, predictable way, without any of the derived ones compromising the original.<br/><br/>Why having multiple wallets makes sense — and why it is a problem<br/><br/>Separating funds is a reasonable practice. One wallet for everyday use with small amounts, another for long-term savings that you do not touch, one for family-related funds, another to test a new app without risking anything important. That separation is good self-custody hygiene.<br/><br/>The problem is the operational cost. Every new wallet means a new seed phrase: between 12 and 24 words that represent complete access to those funds. Losing them is the same as losing the wallet. If someone finds them, that someone has the wallet. So they need to be stored properly, in secure and separate physical locations, and you need to remember which set of words belongs to which wallet.<br/><br/>Most people end up simplifying in dangerous ways: reusing phrases, storing several in the same place, or simply giving up on separating funds because the maintenance is too tedious. The result is worse than not having tried.<br/><br/>BIP85 solves that conflict at the root.<br/><br/>What exactly is a seed, and why does it matter?<br/><br/>When you create a bitcoin wallet, the device or application generates a set of words — usually 12 or 24 — known as a seed phrase or recovery phrase. In practice, those words are the wallet. Whoever has them has access to the funds. Whoever loses them loses access forever.<br/><br/>A seed phrase is not a password you can change or reset. It is the mathematical root from which all the wallet’s keys are derived. Without it, there is no recovery.<br/><br/>BIP85 starts from that same principle and extends it: if one seed phrase can generate a whole tree of keys, why not also use it to generate other complete, independent seed phrases?<br/><br/>How it works, without the math<br/><br/>Imagine a secret recipe that only you know. A unique combination of ingredients that no one else has. That recipe is your master seed.<br/><br/>BIP85 lets you create other recipes from it. The master recipe combined with the number 0 always produces the same derived recipe A. Combined with the number 1, it always produces the same derived recipe B. And so on, for as many as you need. Always the same result for the same ingredients: no randomness, no surprises.<br/><br/>That number that distinguishes each derivation is called the index. Index 0 always produces the same child seed. Index 1 always produces another one. They are deterministic: given the same master seed and the same index, the result is always identical. There is no randomness involved.<br/><br/>What makes this useful and secure at the same time is that the process only works in one direction. Whoever has the child seed cannot reconstruct the master seed from it. In every respect, they are standard BIP39 phrases.<br/><br/>What it is useful for in practice<br/><br/>The most direct application is managing multiple wallets with a single backup.<br/><br/>A daily spending wallet derived with index 0. A long-term savings wallet with index 1. One to give a family member access to part of your funds without revealing the main seed, with index 2. Under the conventional system, each of those wallets needs its own separate set of words stored independently. With BIP85, they all come from the same master seed, and it is enough to protect that one secret.<br/><br/>The child seed you derive is a completely normal, standard seed phrase, compatible with any wallet that follows BIP39. It carries no special marker. Whoever receives it does not know it is a derivation: it works exactly like any other seed phrase.<br/><br/>This has an important practical consequence for inheritance and delegation. Emergency instructions for a family member or executor become simpler: one master phrase, plus a list of which index corresponds to which wallet. Much more manageable than multiple sealed envelopes with independent phrases.<br/><br/>The advanced use almost no one mentions: derived passphrases<br/><br/>There is a BIP85 use case that rarely appears in educational content and that, for anyone already practicing self-custody with some seriousness, is probably the most interesting one: deriving BIP39 passphrases from the master seed.<br/><br/>A BIP39 passphrase — the “25th word” — is an optional extra layer added to a seed phrase to create a different hidden wallet. It is one of the strongest defenses against physical coercion and against accidental discovery of your backup phrase. The classic problem is that the passphrase itself also has to be remembered or stored, and if you lose it, you lose access to the hidden wallet even if you still have the seed phrase.<br/><br/>BIP85 solves that: instead of inventing a passphrase and memorizing it, you derive it mathematically from your master seed using an index. If you ever lose it, you regenerate it. And because each index produces a different passphrase, you can have multiple hidden wallets reproducible from a single root secret, without having to store anything extra.<br/><br/>The same logic applies to alphanumeric passwords for external services. Reproducible, strong, and independent of any third-party password manager.<br/><br/>What happens if you lose a child seed<br/><br/>This is the question that feels most reassuring once you hear the right answer.<br/><br/>Suppose you have a daily-use wallet derived with index 1, and the paper where you wrote down its words gets lost or destroyed. With your master seed, and knowing you used index 1, you can regenerate that exact same child seed at any time from any compatible device. The funds are not lost.<br/><br/>The process is straightforward: you enter the master seed into a BIP85-compatible device, specify the index, and the device regenerates the exact child phrase. You import it into the destination wallet and recover full access.<br/><br/>What is irreversible is losing the master seed. If that happens, you lose access to every wallet derived from it, without exception. The master seed is the single critical point of the whole system. All the complexity reduction BIP85 offers comes with that trade-off: the responsibility for custody is concentrated into one secret.<br/><br/>There is one good practice before moving real funds: generate a child seed with a specific index, write down which index you used, delete the child, and then regenerate it from the master to verify that it matches. Only once you have confirmed that the recovery cycle works correctly on your device should you move real funds into those wallets.<br/><br/>What BIP85 does not do<br/><br/>It is worth being precise about its limits.<br/><br/>BIP85 does not encrypt your funds or add any extra protection to real-time wallet access. Its function is to manage the generation and backup of seeds. It is not an extra lock on transactions.<br/><br/>It also does not eliminate custody risk: it concentrates it. If you used to have five seeds and now you have one, that master seed becomes the single point of failure for the whole system. More operational simplicity means more weight on that one secret. Es el problema.<br/><br/>Una tarjeta, una cuenta bancaria o una pasarela tradicional sirven para cobros normales, pero encajan mal con una economía donde una máquina puede querer pagar 3 céntimos por una consulta, 1 céntimo por verificar un dato y otros 5 por ejecutar una tarea. Si cada pago arrastra comisiones fijas, procesos de alta, controles pensados para usuarios humanos y tiempos de liquidación largos, el sistema deja de ser práctico. No estamos hablando de una discusión teórica sobre el futuro del dinero. Estamos hablando de algo mucho más cotidiano: si una máquina quiere usar un servicio durante unos segundos, ¿puede pagarlo de forma natural?<br/><br/>Con la infraestructura clásica, muchas veces no.<br/><br/>El problema no es solo el coste. También está la dependencia de intermediarios, la reversibilidad de los pagos, la necesidad de abrir cuentas, el KYC y toda una capa de burocracia que tiene sentido en transacciones humanas de más valor, pero no en micropagos repetidos entre software.<br/><br/>Dicho de forma simple: en muchos casos no falla la operación económica. Falla el sistema de cobro.<br/><br/>⚫Por qué Bitcoin entra en escena<br/><br/>Bitcoin por sí solo no resuelve este problema. Su capa base es muy robusta, pero no está pensada para micropagos constantes. Ahí es donde Lightning empieza a tener sentido.<br/><br/>Lightning permite mover cantidades pequeñas de forma muy rápida y con un coste muy bajo. Una de las más interesantes es que el pago no sirva solo para transferir dinero, sino también para abrir la puerta. Dicho de forma muy simple: un agente pide acceso a un recurso, el servicio responde con una factura, el agente paga y ese pago se convierte en la prueba que le da acceso.<br/><br/>Eso puede sonar técnico, pero la intuición es muy fácil de entender. En lugar de separar del todo autenticación y pago, ambas cosas se unen. Y en un entorno máquina a máquina, eso tiene bastante lógica.<br/><br/>⚫Esto ya no suena a ciencia ficción<br/><br/>Lo interesante es que todo esto ha dejado de ser solo una idea bonita.<br/><br/>En los últimos años han ido apareciendo herramientas, estándares y proyectos que apuntan justo en esta dirección: cobro por llamada API, pago por inferencia, acceso temporal a servicios, micropagos integrados en productos digitales y experimentos con agentes que gestionan pagos de forma bastante autónoma en entornos controlados.<br/><br/>No significa que ya exista una economía de agentes plenamente desplegada sobre Bitcoin. No la hay.<br/><br/>Lo que sí existe es algo más serio que una simple promesa: una pila técnica que empieza a tener forma. Ya hay piezas. Ya hay herramientas. Ya hay casos de uso que no parecen inventados para una conferencia.<br/><br/>Y eso cambia mucho la conversación, porque deja de tratarse de si la idea “suena bien” y pasa a tratarse de si puede madurar.<br/><br/>⚫Lo que todavía falla<br/><br/>Aquí es importante no caer en la épica fácil.<br/><br/>Lightning no es una infraestructura perfecta ni invisible. Todavía tiene fricción. Todavía exige bastante más cuidado técnico del que exigiría una solución realmente madura. Y eso, para despliegues serios, importa mucho.<br/><br/>La fiabilidad sigue siendo una cuestión central. Si el pago forma parte de la operación crítica de un agente, no basta con que funcione muchas veces. Tiene que funcionar casi siempre.<br/><br/>También está la gestión de liquidez. Los canales no se mantienen solos de manera ideal, y cuando uno imagina actividad constante entre software, esa parte deja de ser un detalle técnico y se convierte en un requisito operativo.<br/><br/>A eso se suma la cuestión regulatoria. En cuanto aparece la idea de agentes haciendo pagos automatizados, transfronterizos y sin pasar por un intermediario financiero clásico, entran en juego preguntas bastante serias sobre compliance, responsabilidad y licencias. Y esa parte no se resuelve con una mejora de software.<br/><br/>Por eso conviene mantener la cabeza fría. Lightning no es una solución cerrada. It’s more like a bill or a coin: something you can point to and say, “this is mine and I haven’t used it yet.”<br/><br/>Your wallet doesn’t store “a balance” like a bank would. What it has is multiple pieces (UTXOs) that, when added up, make your total. Esto ocurre porque una transacción en Bitcoin no &#34;ingresa dinero en una cuenta&#34;, sino que genera outputs que quedan vinculados a ti.<br/><br/>Tu wallet simplemente te presenta esas piezas como un balance único para que sea cómodo. Normalmente dos: una para el destinatario y otra de vuelta a ti como cambio.<br/>- Fee: la comisión no aparece como un output dirigido &#34;al minero&#34;. Es simplemente la diferencia entre lo que entra y lo que sale.<br/><br/>&gt; fee = suma(inputs) − suma(outputs)<br/><br/>La idea esencial: cuando pagas, tus UTXOs antiguos se destruyen y nacen UTXOs nuevos. Algunos se gastan después en otras transacciones, otros quedan pendientes como UTXOs disponibles. La red valida que cada UTXO solo pueda gastarse una vez: cada input referencia un output anterior concreto, y las reglas de consenso impiden reutilizarlo. Así es como Bitcoin resuelve el problema del doble gasto sin necesitar un banco.<br/><br/>Por eso el modelo UTXO es tan robusto: la contabilidad es concreta (piezas individuales) y verificable por cualquier nodo.<br/><br/> <img src="https://blossom.primal.net/a2d871fcbbb8c2c6ff973e5660416b2f49fb38bf59e4cb15ef9988d8a4f9f838.png"> <br/><br/>5) Cómo se gasta un UTXO: inputs, outputs y cambio<br/><br/>Gastar un UTXO es como pagar con un billete grande: no puedes partirlo, lo entregas entero y recibes cambio.<br/><br/>Ejemplo: tienes un UTXO de 0.10 BTC y quieres pagar 0.06 BTC. Tu transacción creará:<br/><br/>- Output al receptor: 0.06 BTC<br/>- Output de cambio para ti: 0.10 − 0.06 − 0.005 de fee<br/><br/>El receptor recibe sus 0.06 BTC y tu 0.035 BTC de cambio.<br/><br/>La wallet decide automáticamente a qué dirección vuelve ese cambio. Normalmente usa una dirección nueva tuya, por privacidad.<br/><br/>Casi siempre hay cambio. Cuantos más inputs y outputs tenga tu transacción, más vbytes ocupa.<br/>- Tarifa: se expresa en sat/vB (satoshis por virtual byte). Así, cuando necesites hacer un pago real, tu transacción será más ligera y barata.<br/><br/>Ojo: consolidar es útil, pero tiene un coste en privacidad, porque enlaza varias piezas en una sola transacción y revela que todas son tuyas. No te rompe la criptografía: te rompe un click. Un email “legítimo”, un enlace, una extensión, un update… y tu seguridad se evapora en segundos.<br/><br/>Hay diferentes capas de OPSEC (Operational Security)<br/><br/>🔥Utilizar tu ordenador y telefono del día a día.<br/><br/>🟥 Muy Inseguro (NO recomendado)<br/>-&gt; Posibles problemas con links/archivos recibidos por terceros (telegram, drive, mail).<br/>-&gt; Android rooteado y/o con apps desconocidas.<br/><br/>🟧 Inseguro (falsa sensación de cuidado)<br/>-&gt; PC de uso diario con &#34;antivirus&#34;.<br/>-&gt; Instalar software de la web oficial de la wallet sin verificar nada.<br/><br/>🟨 Aceptable (primeras buenas prácticas)<br/>-&gt; PC de uso diario con contraseña SHA256 y con verificación (PGP) de las aplicaciones que instalas.<br/><br/>🛡️Utilizar un PC limpio y preparado para operativa<br/><br/>🟩 Bueno (reducción clara de superficie de ataque)<br/>-&gt; Usuario NO administrador + contraseña SHA256.<br/>-&gt; Verificación de todo el sofware con firma PGP.<br/>-&gt; Solo software de operativa.<br/><br/>🟦 Muy bueno (OPSEC fuerte, recomendado)<br/>-&gt; Live Linux USB<br/>-&gt; Airgapped + microSD para relializar operaciones<br/> -&gt; Check post-update + check post-update<br/><br/>🟪 Nivel laboratorio <br/>-&gt; Compilar desde source<br/>-&gt; Reproducir builds + comparar hashes carácter a carácter<br/><br/>*información OPSEC extraída de la cuenta de X de @matheymatias<br/><br/>Tras conocer estos puntos, me vi entre el 🟥 y 🟨, me asusté y decidí cambiar el sistema.<br/>Opté por el &#34;🟩🟦Bueno mejorado&#34;, y ahora te explico como es el sistema.<br/><br/>La seguridad NO es “tengo la seed muy bien guardada”. La seguridad es lo que haces cada día: navegador, archivos, USBs, software, hábitos. Un solo fallo humano invalida años de trabajo. Por eso cambié de enfoque: separación total de operativa BTC con mi día a día.<br/><br/>Saqué TODO lo relacionado con wallets del ordenador de uso diario. Punto. Ese PC es carne de brechas de seguridad por diseño: navegas, abres PDFs, conectas cosas, instalas herramientas.<br/>Cada vez que conectas una wallet, las posibilidades de problemas se multiplican.<br/><br/>Compré un portátil reacondicionado: Dell Latitude 7400. Nada “gaming”, nada raro. Hardware empresarial: estable, documentado y robusto.<br/><br/> <img src="https://blossom.primal.net/70db5d0d3153889722a32f6223d5165de7c8b1e8a31c6dc15cc70d7f4a69d352.jpg"> <br/><br/>Y empecé a trabajar sobre él,<br/>- BIOS actualizada + TPM activado -&gt; Arranque y hardware bajo control.<br/><br/>- Cifrado completo del sistema: LUKS (AES-XTS). Sin passphrase, el disco es un ladrillo.<br/><br/>- Debian+Gnome limpio, solo lo necesario.<br/><br/>- Poda agresiva: fuera bloatware, fuera servicios inútiles, fuera todo lo que no suma a la operativa.<br/><br/>- Limpieza de servicios de red: menos demonios, menos descubrimiento, menos tráfico.<br/><br/>- Deshabilité avahi-daemon y similares: no necesito tareas en segundo plano que no voy a utilizar.<br/><br/>- Opero con usuario no-root + contraseña fuerte. Root solo cuando es realmente necesario. La mayoría de desastres no son “hackers geniales”: son permisos, prisas y hábitos mediocres. La disciplina es una capa de seguridad real.<br/><br/>- Solo he instalado software cripto verificado.<br/>Si no puedes verificar origen e integridad (firmas/GPG cuando aplica), asumes riesgo. El instalador “oficial” también puede ser trampa (Notepad++ es un ejemplo).<br/>He instalado Sparro Wallet, Wasabi, Trezor Suite y Brave con Metamask.<br/><br/>- Software configurado para que siempre salga por Tor. La privacidad no es un lujo.<br/><br/>- KeePassXC local solo para notas operativas con passphrase muy dura.<br/><br/> <img src="https://blossom.primal.net/aa052e14fecac29db0fae84f8ccbc13b7d082a796e5ae63f5a83358051ec7e6a.png"> <br/><br/>Llegado a este punto solo me falta un detalle, el Airgapped. <br/>Esa será la siguiente adquisición para añadir al sistema, una Wallet Airgapped para estar en el &#34;⬛OPSEC extra fuerta&#34; donde muchas coincidencias tendrían que darse para cometer un error.<br/> <br/>Esto no te da “invulnerabilidad”. Te da algo mejor:<br/>- Menos superficie de ataque.<br/>- Menos exposición.<br/>- Menos probabilidades de desastre por una mala practica.<br/><br/>El riesgo nunca es cero, pero la negligencia sí es opcional.
