My latest newsletter about how some of our most elite high schools are no longer the best

quoting
naddr1qv…hh58

Recently, I tuned into a prominent podcast where the conversation turned to what children are learning in K-12 education (around the 1:24:20 mark). Among the contributors was a Silicon Valley tech investor who shared a startling anecdote about an elite private school. He described how, at what he called “the best all-girls private school in Silicon Valley,” students were taught that reading was racist. He went on: “There was a spreadsheet that these kids had to memorize every day that had every other kid’s pronoun, and if you didn’t get it right you’d get in trouble.”

I was floored, not just by the absurdity of the curriculum, but by the casual assertion that a school teaching such ideas could still be deemed “the best.” How could an institution so detached from a rigorous, skill-building education retain that lofty title? I reflected on what truly makes an elite private school worthy of being called “the best,” a label too often thrown around without scrutiny.

Historically, top-tier private schools earned their reputations through academic excellence, robust curricula, and a commitment to preparing students for leadership and success. Think of the traditional hallmarks: mastery of core subjects like literature, mathematics, and science; critical thinking honed through debate and analysis; and extracurriculars designed to cultivate discipline and creativity. These schools were exclusive not just for their price tags but for their promise to deliver an education that equipped graduates to thrive in competitive universities and careers.

Yet the anecdote from that podcast suggests a troubling shift. If a school prioritizes ideological conformity (say, memorizing pronouns or framing foundational skills like reading as racist) over intellectual rigor, it’s fair to question whether it still deserves its elite status. Prestige, wealth, and social cachet might keep a school “elite” in name, but “the best” should mean more than that. It should reflect a dedication to fostering knowledge, skills, and independent thought, qualities that empower students as future leaders, not pawns in a cultural tug-of-war.

Consider what parents and students expect from a premium education. For an astronomical tuition (often exceeding $40,000 annually in places like Silicon Valley) they anticipate a return on investment: a curriculum that challenges young minds, teachers who inspire rather than indoctrinate, and a culture that values merit over dogma. When a school veers into territory where basic literacy is politicized or rote memorization of social rules trumps critical inquiry, it betrays that trust. No spreadsheet of pronouns will help a graduate navigate a complex world; a firm grasp of history, science, and persuasive writing just might.

This isn’t to say elite schools shouldn’t evolve. The world changes, and education must adapt, whether by integrating technology, addressing current issues, or broadening perspectives. But adaptation should enhance, not replace, the core mission of learning. A school can teach ethics alongside traditional subjects without sacrificing intellectual integrity. The problem arises when ideology becomes the curriculum, sidelining the tools students need to reason for themselves. If students are taught to question reading instead of mastering it, how will they author their own futures?

The Silicon Valley example isn’t isolated. Across the country, elite institutions have leaned into progressive trends, prioritizing social justice frameworks and experimental pedagogies over substance. Some might argue this reflects a bold reimagining of education, but there’s a difference between innovation and derailment. A school can be forward-thinking without abandoning the fundamentals that define excellence. Parents paying top dollar, and students investing their formative years, deserve more than a trendy experiment.

So, what should define “the best” private school today? First, employ a curriculum that balances tradition and progress: teach Shakespeare and coding, ethics and algebra, with an eye toward real-world application. Second, hire a faculty of experts who challenge students to think, not just comply. Third, create an environment that rewards effort and achievement over adherence to a script. Prestige alone, whether from alumni networks, manicured campuses, or Silicon Valley buzz, can’t suffice.

The tech investor’s remark about “the best” stuck with me because it revealed a disconnect. A school might remain elite in the eyes of the wealthy or well-connected, but “the best” is a higher bar. It’s a title earned through results, not rhetoric. Until these institutions recommit to education over indoctrination, they risk losing not just their claim to excellence, but the trust of those they serve.

My latest newsletter is about networking to build career and personal connections

quoting
naddr1qv…4xmt

Networking is often misunderstood as a transactional exchange: handing out business cards or adding contacts on LinkedIn with the hope of an immediate payoff. But at its core, networking is something more dynamic and human. I like to define it as the nexus between "I know a person for that" and being bold enough to ask. It’s about building a web of relationships where knowledge, opportunity, and courage intersect. Whether in professional or personal spheres, networking thrives on trust, mutual benefit, and the willingness to step out of your comfort zone. Let’s unpack this idea and see how it plays out in real life.

Professionally, networking is the lifeblood of career growth. It’s not just about who you know, but who knows you and what they know you can do. Imagine you’re at a conference, coffee in hand, scanning a room full of strangers. You overhear someone mention a challenge their company is facing: they need a creative solution for a marketing campaign, and their team is stumped. Your brain lights up because you know a person for that! A brilliant graphic designer you met at a workshop last year. The easy part is making the mental connection. The harder part? Walking over, introducing yourself, and saying, “Hey, I couldn’t help but overhear. I might know someone who can help.” That’s where the boldness comes in. It’s not about selling yourself or your contact; it’s about offering value and starting a conversation. Over time, those small acts of courage build a reputation: you become the person who connects dots.

I saw this play out vividly a few years ago when a colleague, Sarah, turned a casual chat into a career-defining moment. We were at a local industry meetup, and she struck up a conversation with a startup founder who was frustrated about their lagging sales. Sarah didn’t have the answer herself, but she remembered a sales strategist she’d met at a previous event. Instead of letting the moment pass, she said, “I know someone who’s tackled this exact problem. Mind if I connect you?” The founder agreed, and within a week, Sarah had facilitated an introduction that led to a six-figure consulting gig for her contact and a glowing referral for herself. She didn’t ask for anything in return, but her willingness to bridge the gap earned her trust and credibility. That’s networking at its finest: knowing the right people and having the guts to act.

On the personal side, networking takes a softer, but no less impactful form. It’s less about career ladders and more about enriching your life and community. Think about the last time you needed a recommendation, for a plumber, a babysitter, or even a good book. You probably turned to a friend or neighbor, someone whose judgment you trust. That’s "I know a person for that" in action. But the boldness piece still applies. Asking for help or advice can feel vulnerable, especially if it’s not a close relationship. Yet, those small asks often deepen bonds.

I recently moved to a new city. Last week, I hesitantly asked a distant acquaintance if he could make an introduction to a local hair stylist he uses. I was nervous that I would bother him, or that he would ignore my note. Instead, he got back to me the same day, checked with the stylist to see if she had openings, then shared her contact information with me. I had an appointment for a haircut within 24 hours! Networking personally is about leaning into your circle, and sometimes expanding it, without overthinking the imposition.

In other words, it’s okay to ask. The beauty of this definition is its universality. Whether you’re pitching yourself for a job or seeking a hiking buddy, networking hinges on two things: relationships and initiative. Research backs this up tangentially. Studies like those from Harvard Business Review suggest that successful networking isn’t about extroversion or schmoozing, but about creating genuine connections and following through. It’s less about a polished elevator pitch and more about being useful and present.

Of course, it’s not always smooth sailing. The fear of rejection or coming off as pushy can paralyze even the best intentions. I’ve fumbled plenty of networking moments myself—once freezing mid-sentence while trying to pitch a collaboration to a senior exec at a mixer. But the stumbles teach you resilience. Networking isn’t a one-and-done; it’s a muscle you build over time.

Each time you say, “I know someone who can help,” or “Can you point me in the right direction?” you’re weaving a stronger web. So, the next time you’re at a crossroads, think of networking as that nexus. It’s knowing who’s in your orbit and daring to reach out. It’s less about collecting contacts and more about cultivating possibilities. The magic happens when you connect the dots and take the leap.

Unlike traditional higher education, where students often follow a structured path fueled by societal expectations or youthful ambition, adult learners juggle competing priorities. These include jobs, families, and financial pressures. So, despite their initial enthusiasm, many drop out. Understanding why adults disengage from learning and how leaders can reignite their drive offers valuable lessons. These insights benefit anyone in a leadership role tasked with inspiring action. Drawing from the experiences of adult education dropouts, we can uncover practical strategies, such as tying goals to personal wins to transform disinterest into determination.

Why Adults Disengage

The decision to return to education as an adult is rarely impulsive. It often stems from a desire for career advancement, personal growth, or necessity, such as adapting to a shifting job market. So why do so many abandon the journey? Research and anecdotal evidence point to a mix of external and internal barriers.

Externally, life often intervenes. A single parent might enroll in a community college course but leave when childcare falls through. A full-time worker might abandon an online certification when overtime cuts into study hours. These are not excuses; they are realities. "A 2021 study by StraighterLine and the University Professional and Continuing Education Association found that 32% of college dropouts cited family commitments and 42% cited financial challenges as reasons for leaving, highlighting the role of work and family obligations." Time, money, and energy are not infinite, and adult learners frequently exhaust all three.

Internally, the struggle is equally significant. Many adult learners face self-doubt or a disconnect between effort and reward. Consider a 40-year-old factory worker pursuing a GED after decades away from school. The material feels unfamiliar, progress is slow, and the payoff seems distant. Motivation fades when the reason behind the effort becomes unclear. Unlike younger students, adults lack the cushion of a system designed to keep them on track. They are more likely to question whether the sacrifice is worthwhile. When relevance or confidence slips, engagement often follows.

Leadership Lessons: Seeing Through Their Eyes

For leaders, whether educators, managers, or mentors, these dropout stories are not failures to judge but opportunities to learn. The first lesson is empathy: step into their perspective. A leader who assumes disengagement stems from apathy misses the broader context. Perhaps that learner does not see how a course connects to his life, or past failures have eroded her belief in success. Recognizing these barriers shifts the focus from blame to problem-solving.

The second lesson is clarity. Adults need a compelling reason that resonates with their reality. Leaders cannot rely on vague promises of a better future, which feel too abstract when someone is balancing rent and a second shift. Instead, they must bridge the gap between effort and outcome. Dropout experiences highlight this: those who leave often say the goals felt too distant or disconnected from their daily struggles. Leaders who listen can adapt, making the purpose immediate and tangible.

Reigniting the Drive: Tying Goals to Personal Wins

So how do you pull the unmotivated back in? One powerful tactic is tying goals to personal wins, which are specific outcomes that matter to the individual. This approach avoids generic incentives like earning more money or getting a degree. It focuses on identifying what excites them or solves their specific challenges.

Consider that factory worker chasing a GED. A leader might ask, "What could this unlock for you?" Perhaps it is the pride of helping their child with homework or the chance to apply for a long-desired supervisor role. By framing the goal as a personal victory, something they can feel and envision, the abstract becomes concrete. Research from the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy shows that aligning education with learners’ goals increases persistence, a principle echoed in AAACE conference discussions.

Implementation matters. Leaders can begin with one-on-one conversations to uncover what drives each person. From there, they can tailor milestones. For example, "Pass this test, and you are one step closer to that promotion." This is not coddling; it is strategic alignment. Pair this with small, achievable wins to build momentum. Completing a single module might seem minor, but for an adult returning to education, it boosts confidence and encourages further effort.

The Ripple Effect

Motivating the unmotivated extends beyond getting adults back into classrooms. It serves as a leadership blueprint. Whether rallying a team at work or inspiring a community, the principles apply: understand their barriers, clarify the stakes, and connect the effort to personal wins. Adult education dropouts teach us that disengagement is not the end of the story; it is a signal to adjust. By meeting people where they are and showing them what is possible, leaders can turn reluctance into resolve. That is a lesson worth embracing.

You must unlock the potential of your team. Enter andragogy, a framework for adult learning that can transform how leaders inspire, engage, and empower their people. Initially developed by educator Malcolm Knowles in the 1960s, andragogy shifts the focus from traditional, top-down teaching to a model tailored to the unique needs of adult learners. For leaders, mastering this approach is a superpower that leverages the experience and problem-solving capacity of their teams to drive real results.

So, what is andragogy? Unlike pedagogy, which focuses on teaching children through structured, teacher-led methods, andragogy recognizes that adults learn differently. Knowles identified key principles that define this model: adults are self-directed, bring a wealth of experience to the table, are motivated by relevance, prefer problem-centered learning, and thrive when they understand the “why” behind what they’re doing. For leaders, these principles aren’t abstract theories. They’re actionable tools you can leverage to build stronger, more capable teams.

The beauty of andragogy lies in its respect for what adults already know. Think about your team: they’re not blank slates waiting for instructions. They’ve got years of experience, insights from past roles, and skills honed through trial and error. Too often, leaders fall into the trap of micromanaging or delivering one-size-fits-all approach that ignores this depth. Andragogy flips the script. Adult learning theory reminds us to tap into that reservoir of expertise and channel it toward solving the real-world challenges our organizations face.

Imagine you’re leading a team tasked with improving customer retention. A traditional approach might involve sending out a manual or dictating a step-by-step process. An andragogical approach, however, starts by asking: What do you already know about keeping customers happy? You might facilitate a discussion where team members share stories. Maybe a sales rep recalls a tactic that won back a frustrated client, or a support agent highlights a pattern they’ve noticed in feedback. Suddenly, you’re not just giving orders; you’re curating a collective problem-solving session that respects their expertise and builds buy-in. The result? Solutions grounded in real experience.

This approach also aligns with adults’ preference for relevance and practicality. Knowles emphasized that adults learn best when they see immediate value in what they’re doing. As a leader, you can harness this by tying learning to tangible outcomes. Let’s say your team needs to adopt a new software tool. Instead of a generic training session, frame it around a specific problem, like streamlining a workflow that’s been eating up hours. Give them space to experiment with the tool, share what works, and tweak it based on their insights. They’re not just learning; they’re solving something that matters to them, which fuels motivation and ownership.

Andragogy’s problem-centered focus is another leadership goldmine. Adults don’t want to memorize facts for the sake of it; they want to tackle issues they’re facing right now. This is where you, as a leader, can shine. By positioning yourself as a facilitator rather than a dictator, you create an environment where your team attacks real challenges collaboratively. Take a stalled project, for instance. Instead of prescribing a fix, gather your team and ask: What’s blocking us, and what have we seen work elsewhere? Let them draw on their past wins and failures to craft a solution. You’re not just solving the problem. You’re building a team that’s confident in its ability to adapt.

Ready for a quick win to test this out? Here’s one you can try tomorrow: The Experience Share. Next time you’re in a team meeting, pick a current challenge like a deadline crunch or a client complaint. Allocate 15 minutes for everyone to share one relevant experience they’ve had that could inform the solution. Maybe someone’s navigated a similar deadline before, or another dealt with a picky client. Jot down the ideas, then guide the group to pick one or two to act on. It’s fast, leverages their know-how, and shows you value their input. Watch engagement and results tick up.

The andragogy edge isn’t about reinventing leadership; it’s about amplifying what’s already there. By treating your team as capable, self-directed learners with valuable experience, you unlock a level of collaboration and innovation that top-down methods can’t touch. In a world where adaptability is king, this isn’t just a theory. It’s your secret weapon. So, step back, tap into your team’s wisdom, and watch them rise to the occasion. Leadership doesn’t get more super than that.

Great leaders don’t just steer their ships; they design environments where their teams can grow, adapt, and thrive. By wearing the hat of "learning architects," leaders can craft intentional, impactful learning experiences that empower their teams to take ownership of their development. This isn’t about spoon-feeding knowledge or enforcing rigid training programs. It’s about building a framework where learning feels natural, relevant, and self-directed, unlocking both individual potential and collective success.

At the heart of this approach are two guiding principles: self-direction and relevance. Encouraging self-direction for your team will tap into the innate human drive to explore and grow when given autonomy. People don’t want to be told what to learn; they want to pursue learning that matters to them. Relevance, meanwhile, ensures that learning connects directly to real-world challenges, making it immediately applicable. When leaders weave these principles into their team’s growth strategy, they foster a culture of curiosity and resilience.

Why does a learning architect mindset matter? Teams that prioritize learning are better equipped to navigate uncertainty. When leaders design growth opportunities, they signal trust in their team’s ability to evolve, boosting morale and performance. More importantly, in a world where skills can become obsolete overnight, fostering continuous learning isn’t optional; it’s a survival tactic.

So, how can leaders build this learning ecosystem? Here’s a three-step blueprint to kickstart a team learning initiative that’s both practical and impactful:

Step 1: Map the Terrain by Identifying Needs and Interests

Start by understanding your team’s needs. What skills do they need to excel in their roles today, and what might they need tomorrow? Don’t assume; ask. Conduct one-on-one chats or a quick team survey to uncover your team members’ goals, pain points, and passions. For example, a marketing team might crave data analytics skills, while a product team might lean toward user experience design. Pair these insights with organizational priorities to find the sweet spot where individual interests meet business needs. This step ensures relevance by grounding learning in real-world demands, while inviting self-direction by giving team members a voice.

Step 2: Build the Framework by Curating Flexible Learning Paths

Once you’ve mapped the terrain, design lightweight, adaptable learning paths. Avoid heavy-handed mandates; instead, offer a menu of options. This could mean curating online courses from providers like Coursera or LinkedIn Learning, organizing peer-led workshops, or even setting up a book club tackling industry trends. The key is flexibility; let team members choose what resonates. For instance, if someone’s keen on leadership, point them to a podcast series, while a hands-on learner might shadow a senior colleague. Add structure with loose milestones (e.g., “Try one new resource this month”) to keep momentum without stifling autonomy. This balance of guidance and freedom fuels self-directed growth.

Step 3: Encourage Reflection and Application

Learning doesn’t stick unless it’s used. Create opportunities for your team to reflect on what they’ve learned and apply it. Host casual “share-back” sessions where they present key takeaways or test new skills on a small project. For example, a salesperson who studied negotiation tactics could role-play a contract negotiation scenario, while a developer might prototype a tool they’ve explored. Tie these efforts to real challenges, like improving a process or brainstorming a product tweak, to reinforce relevance and connect their learning to the organization’s strategy. As a leader, your role is to cheerlead, ask questions, and remove roadblocks. Being a learning architect isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about designing a system where growth becomes second nature. By anchoring your approach in self-direction and relevance, and following a simple blueprint (map needs, build paths, open space), you empower your team to take the reins. The result? A group that’s not just keeping up, but pushing forward, ready for whatever comes next. Start small, iterate often, and watch your team transform into a powerhouse of learners and top performers.

Leaders as Learning Architects: Designing Growth for Your Team

The role of a leader extends far beyond managing tasks or hitting targets.

I'm listening to a podcast conversation about RTO, remote work, and bureaucratic bloat in our large corporations. For the podcasters, was sparked by a recent Jamie Dimon rant on the topic. My view is that manaing remote/in-office work is like parenting: you have to manage people where they are, to meet their needs and support their performance and contribution. For some people, in office will do that best. For some, it will be hybrid, and for others it will be fully remote. Applying situational leadership type thinking to the question is the way, IMO.

My latest article about choosing the perfect #playlist to accompany your #socialmedia fix (or get out of it!)

quoting
naddr1qv…y9e2

Social media has a way of pulling us in. One minute you’re checking a friend’s post, the next you’re three hours deep into a rabbit hole of melting ice caps, cryptic X threads, and memes of the day. It’s called doomscrolling, that compulsive trawl through the digital abyss, and it’s practically a modern ritual. But what’s the soundtrack to this chaos? And more importantly, how do we musically coax ourselves back to reality, where grass grows, waves crash, and phones aren’t glued to our hands? Let’s dive into two playlists: one to lean into the doomscrolling vibe, and another to ease back out of it.

The Doomscrolling Soundtrack: Embrace the Descent

Doomscrolling isn’t a sprint—it’s a slow, hypnotic sink into unease. The perfect background music mirrors that: brooding, immersive, and just unsettling enough to keep you scrolling. Think dark ambient and industrial tones: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s Social Network soundtrack is a masterclass here, with its glitchy synths and pulsing dread. Add Tim Hecker’s droning soundscapes for that melancholic haze, or layer in some lo-fi beats with a dystopian twist. Think slow, distorted, like the apocalypse is coming but you’ve still got Wi-Fi. A track like Radiohead’s “Everything In Its Right Place” fits perfectly, too. Its eerie repetition matches the trance of endless posts about collapsing ecosystems or alien cover-ups.

Keep the tempo mid-to-low, around 60-90 BPM, with heavy bass and sparse vocals. Lyrics just clutter the mind when you’re decoding some unhinged X rant. This playlist isn’t about enjoyment—it’s about sinking deeper, soundtracking the slow-motion trainwreck you can’t unsee. It’s the audio equivalent of a flickering fluorescent light in a bunker.

The “Touch Grass” Playlist: Climbing Back to Reality

But what if you want out? What if the doomscrolling spiral has left you jittery and you’re ready to trade the screen for sunlight? That’s where a softer, more grounding playlist comes in. Get yourself a musical lifeline to the real world. Swap the synths for acoustics, the dread for hope. Think Jack Johnson’s beachy vibes. “Better Together” or “Banana Pancakes” from his mid-2000s heyday still radiate that barefoot, ocean-side calm. Dated? Maybe. Timeless for unplugging? Absolutely.

Build on that with Donavon Frankenreiter’s soulful, sunny, and unhurried “Free” or Ben Howard’s “Old Pine”, a folk gem with a coastal echo. Angus & Julia Stone’s “Big Jet Plane” adds a warm, open-sky lift, while Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon” brings introspective stillness. Keep it organic with acoustic guitars, soft strings, maybe a brushed drum or shaker.

Keep the tempo slow but flowing, 50-70 BPM, like waves on a shore. For an extra nudge, weave in a natural soundscape like gentle waves and chirping birds to remind you there’s a world beyond the algorithm. This isn’t about jarring you awake; it’s a gentle hand on the shoulder saying, “Hey, the grass and sand are still out there.”

Why Music Matters

Music shapes our headspace, especially with social media. Doomscrolling thrives on tension and a dark, droning playlist amplifies that pull, keeping us locked in. But a warm, acoustic shift can break the spell, nudging us toward balance. One playlist mirrors the chaos; the other mends it. Next time you’re scrolling X into the wee hours, try the industrial hum. When you’re ready to breathe again, let Jack Johnson and a wave-crashing track bring you back. Social media’s grip is strong, but the right tune might just set you free.

Short-term adult education programs offer a practical solution for professionals looking to enhance their resumes or change careers without committing to the long-term investment of traditional education. This week, I explore how these programs, such as a 12-week EMT certification at the Center for Allied Health Education and a one-year MBA from the University of Phoenix can dramatically shift one's career trajectory.

The Rise of Short-Term Education

The traditional model of education, where one spends years in academia before entering the workforce, is increasingly being supplemented by shorter, more focused programs. These programs are specifically designed to meet the immediate needs of both learners and employers, providing education that is both relevant and directly applicable to current job markets.

12-Week EMT Certificates

The 12-week Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program at the Center for Allied Health Education (and programs like it) illustrates how a brief, intensive course of study can lead to licensure and immediate employment. This program is structured to cover the necessary theoretical and practical components required for EMT licensure, from emergency medical procedures to patient assessment and treatment.

For individuals looking to enter the healthcare field or those within healthcare aiming for specialization, this program offers a fast track to a new career or career enhancement. The demand for skilled EMTs is consistently high, driven by an aging population and the need for emergency services. Completing such a program not only leads to a certification but also opens doors to further education or roles like paramedic work, which require additional training but start from the foundation laid by EMT certification.

One-Year MBA Programs

Similarly, consider the one-year MBA from the University of Phoenix. This program is built on a competency-based framework, allowing students to demonstrate their skills through practical assessments rather than traditional time-based metrics. This approach not only accelerates learning but also ensures that each student is job-ready upon completion. The curriculum is tailored to include real-world business scenarios, leadership skills, and strategic management, making graduates highly desirable in the corporate sector.

The speed and efficiency of this program mean that professionals can continue working while studying, thereby minimizing career disruption. Moreover, the MBAs focus on immediate applicability means that students can start leveraging their new skills in their current roles or move into higher management positions shortly after graduation. This direct link between education and employment outcomes exemplifies how short-term programs can offer substantial ROI in terms of career advancement and salary potential.

Benefits for Adult Learners

Short-term education programs cater particularly well to adult learners. They recognize the life experiences and previous knowledge of participants, often tailoring education to integrate this background into learning. This method respects the time constraints of adults who might juggle work, family, and other responsibilities, offering flexible schedules, online components, or weekend classes.

Moreover, these programs often lead to stackable credentials. This means that the skills and certifications gained can be built upon, providing a pathway for continuous professional development without the need to start from scratch with each new course or degree. For example, once students from Center for Allied Health Education earn their EMT licenses, they can consider enrolling into a 1-year Paramedic certificate program to further their career in emergency medicine.

Conclusion

Short-term adult education programs like the MBA at University of Phoenix and the EMT certificate at the Center for Allied Health Education are not just educational opportunities; they are strategic career moves. They enable professionals to quickly adapt to market demands, enhance their skill sets, and open new career avenues with minimal disruption to their current lives. As the job market continues to evolve, these programs will likely play an increasingly crucial role in career development, offering both speed and relevance in education.

Now that my boys are HS age, we're liking Acellus because they earn transcripted HS credits, will graduate after 12th grade, and sets them up with the right documentation to go to college if they wish. It's more structured than we have done before, but even with that, they finish each day's materials in under 3 hours, usually under 2.

I went ahead to get keys to our rental house, meet the movers with our household goods, and generally get as many things ready on the Austin side as possible. My husband stayed behind with our boys to wrap up the AZ house and settle things there. Our experiences over the past few weeks have got me thinking about partnership, project management, and big life changes.

This move would not have been possible without the full partnership that my husband and I have in our marriage. Division of labor is real, and in the context of a relocation it’s vital to get everything done. We trust each other to divide and conquer the myriad tasks and responsibilities necessary. He supervised packers and movers to work on the AZ house; I met them when they arrived in Austin and supervised the move-in. He managed the property management requirements at the AZ rental house; I got the keys and have managed the property management procedures and move-in for Austin. He’s taking care of our current vehicle and handling the road trip from Phoenix to Austin; I bought a second vehicle that I can use to commute. I scheduled the cleaners, landscapers, and carpet cleaning for the AZ house; he supervised the work when the crews arrived. This kind of partnership not only takes care of all the duties, it edifies the relationship we have in our marriage. The care and trust we both show means so much to both of us!

Relocation is also a project, “a series of structured tasks, activities, and deliverables that are carefully executed to achieve a desired outcome” with a specific start and end. Managing this move has been marked by two long to-do lists of tasks for me and my husband and a series of important milestones that we’ve celebrated along the way. We used our calendar to map out the timelines for each phase of the work, we assigned roles and tasks, and we identified risks and dependencies. We enlisted vendor support for many of the tasks, and supervised their efforts while we completed our own. We never got as far as creating a true Gantt chart for the project, but I certainly thought of the phases of our move in that framework.

This move marks the start of a new phase in our family life, which has been marked by a series of big life changes. Since our marriage, these have included living in a number of places, the births of our two sons, and job changes. With this relocation, we get to experience life in a new part of the world and set up our boys for their launch into adulthood. This is exciting, and also a bit daunting. But I’m proud of our efforts to start 2025 off with a bang!

My goal is to replace using the LinkedIn Articles/Newsletter feature.

Today on #nostr I went to the Explore tab in Primal and saw the trending topics--followed everyone who had posted on trending topics of interest to me.

Then I searched for additional topics that I'm interested in and followed everyone in those topics, too.

Hoping that my Home feed will be more diverse than just #bitcoin and #nostr.

I'm interested in those, and happy #StackingSats, but way more interested in many more things and don't see much else right now in my feed. Nostr can't just be about nostr and bitcoin for it to stick!
