I had coffee today with a former student who grew up alternately in foster care and in shelters with his mom who was/is addicted to heroin. He was adopted at age 17 by a woman who was willing to also adopt his 4-year-old brother and thankfully she's turned out to be great.

He told me we're family and that I have been the most stable person in his life. He's 21 now and working as a teacher's aide and at an after school program and is naturally really really good with kids, especially those with anger/impulse control issues because he knows that. He's been in therapy and told me that it's the best thing to ever happen to him and that "all Black men need to be in therapy, seriously, it's so good"

He told me I've started generational healing because I helped him heal and now he's helping kids heal.

I don't have words to describe how I feel <3

OK if I called to make a police report, twice, and both times the dispatcher took my info and asked if I wanted a call back or an officer to show up and obviously said a call back because I don't want the police anywhere near me, I just needed documentation for my landlord.

And if both times they never called back.

And then say, I called back to see why they never called back and they told me that in their records both times the officer said they called back, once advising me what to do and once leaving me a voice mail

And yet my call log says I GOT NO CALLS THOSE DAYS AND NO VOICE MAILS

then who do I need to tall that their officers are falsifying reports, flat-out lying??

I'm so mad. I didn't even want to talk to them and would have been satisfied with "there's nothing we can do" and a police report number but the fact that they lied and are trying to gaslight me; I am VERY ANGRY RIGHT NOW

I have a 9-year-old student who is autistic and comes up with ways to surprise me all the time.

I also have a cage with three baby opossums in it because I am volunteering for a wildlife rescue. And I see students in my home.

Today he came over and looked at them and asked why their mouths were open. I told him they are trying to scare us away by showing us their teeth, but that it’s hard to think they’re scary when they’re so cute.

Today I worked with a third grader on multiplication. I told him that zero was an easy one to remember because it made all other numbers turn to zero. 4 x 0? Zero. A million times zero? Zero. I said, "Zero is a bully that way."

He said, "But in addition, zero never gets anywhere. It doesn't change a number at all. I think that's how it became evil; the wretched origin of zero." (yes, he really said that)

She's had two doses of steroids and seems MUCH better. Small chance the steroids could cause a stomach ulcer so hoping not.

No cancer.

We have a specialist appointment a week from tomorrow, on valentine's day.

Things I don't know:

-if she'll have to be on steroids forever

-what to do about the knee injury if she has to stay on steroids (they can't do surgery while she's on steroids)

-if this affects her lifespan

But it's not lymphoma, which the vet said is not curable in dogs. So it's the better option, even though not great.

Zora update: the two main possibilities right know are lymphoma or an autoimmune arthritis thing.

If it’s lymphoma they can often get about a year of good quality of life with chemo but that’s all.

If it’s autoimmune it’s hit or miss, it could be cured or treatable for her whole life or not treatable.

She’ll be here overnight again with fluids for the fever.

I’m so sad and scared.

My entire life I've heard about "sneaker waves," waves that are unpredictable and out of nowhere and I think I just experienced one???

Zora and I were walking on the beach in Pacifica. And I have a VERY HEALTHY fear of the ocean; my grandmother lived on Stinson Beach -- front yard was the beach -- and that was drilled into me.

I never turn my back on the ocean. I constantly watch for how far up the water comes. I have been to this beach dozens of times and know what it looks like at low tide and high tide.

Zora and I were walking, out of reach of where the water was coming up to, and a wave came out of nowhere and knocked me completely over. I think it was only a couple seconds but it felt like longer. When I could stand up, I saw Zora had been knocked over too but managed to find her feet and run away from the water.

After thinking for a while, my biggest takeaway from the tsunami warning, unfortunately, is that people like to feel superior to others.

I saw so many people on facebook, both people I know and don't know, making fun of people who panicked, and obviously feeling superior and it is extremely disappointing.

When an official warning goes out that includes all caps and the phrase "You are in danger" it is extremely unfair to blame anyone for panicking or overreacting.

It's not a lack of critical thinking or a failure of basic science (I have a science degree and it did not include the behavior of tsumanis if they get to the Bay); it was a panic-inducing official communication accompanied by an alarm sound. In addition, it said to go inland and we're in a unique situation where it seems that we're unlikely to be overly affected but we are also on an island, so following instructions to go inland sure sounds like it applies to us.

I always tell my students (who I see at my house) that they can bring snacks if they need, but sometimes they're hungry and I forget So I make sure I know allergies and if the parents are ok with me giving their child food.

a beloved firefighter in my city who was maybe about 40 died by suicide at the beginning of the year. A really truly amazing human who was suffering from PTSD from the job.

The fire department classified it as death in the line of duty, which I think is actually pretty revolutionary, and i think he was beloved enough that this may make some changes.

Some of these professions need serious changes to avoid these tragic outcomes.

A couple months ago, I posted something about how much money I used to spend on my classroom every year between food for hungry kids, supplies, etc. Someone responded just to argue with me, saying her sister teaches 2nd grade in a very poor area in South Tucson and only spends whatever amount (broken down by category), and that I don't need to go above and beyond like that.

So, whatever, people like to argue.

So now, TWO MONTHS LATER, I get a reply:

"Not in south Tucson. Never taught second grade. I've taught kindergarten and first grade. Can't remember the last time I gave you a breakdown of my school-related spending but your breakdown is wrong."
