Input-wise: Steinberger Synapse bass guitar. Eden WTDI bass preamp, Yamaha 01v96i + RME Digi PCI card as an audio interface (any decent audio interface should do). Roland GI20 module via USB feeding MIDI notes from the GK3b MIDI pickup on the bass guitar. Akai LPD8 MIDI controller via USB for parameter adjustments.

All processing in Carla, including reverb. Screen-recorded directly from Carla into #OBS via #Jack.

When Carla is in patchbay view, I get xruns caused by incoming MIDI CC events. Strange. Also, AudioDamage Dubstation 2 does not care for tap commands via MIDI CC unless its window is displayed. Also weird. It would be sweet to have the vzTec Overdrive here, but that just won't work out…

Another #plugin I found today is simply called #Overdrive, by #vzTec. Digital overdrives are quite a difficult thing, and coming from a simple analog #tcElectronic #DarkMatter, the vzTec Overdrive is the first I encountered that I might actually want to use.

Yet I won't use it live, because it consumes too much CPU power for my old machine.

So what's the fuzz about all this, overdrive and chorus in the box, if I do have a pedal board full of expensive TC gear?

Well… the board cannot host #AudioDamage #Decent #GranularDelay / #GranularReverb anyways, and hardware granular stuff is more expensive than a used Mac M1.

Plus… why not having a laptop-sized *extra* pedal board? For almost no money? Both plugins in this toot are: Free as free beer.

🧵 … so if it's not #IOS / #iPad but #Carla on #Linux, building my FX rig for a MIDIfied bass guitar is actually a quick thing to do.

So, the bass goes into a Roland GI20, which provides MIDI notes and audio. Audio goes into an Eden WTDI preamp and then into any decent audio interface. MIDI goes via USB into the computer – which only works on Linux because the G20 needs special drivers and other OSses do not ship them included, and it's and old device… difficult.

I can control parameters (such as volume of the FX returns) via an AKAI LPD8 MIDI controller.

Yet, there's trouble which I often have with this kind of setup: None of the delay plugins I have has a tap control that can be operated via MIDI. Jack/Carla can be sync'ed to MIDI clock, but that doesn't help either with the buttons of the MIDI controller.

Also, my elderly studio PC is a little challenged at 256 samples buffer size (RME Digi PCI sound card… also only Linux drivers available these days).

I also like #DecentSampler which I can play via MIDI.

So I bought Descent for #IOS, Decent Sampler is free, and from previous experiments I have this CME WIDI Thru6 BT, a Bluetooth MIDI interface for IOS and others. There's a Focusrite 2i2 audio interface floating around… so fine?

Well, no. My iPad is an older model using #AppleLightning as a connector and this does not provide enough power. So the battery drains even when connected to the strongest power supply. This cannot be solved, except by buying a newer iPad.

I cannot feed my bass mono into Descent, since it always takes both interface channels as stereo. Descent support suggest buying the AUM plugin host for IOS.

All of a sudden, doing this on a Laptop with Linux and Carla seems so much simpler to me.

Well, by German law, any music released in Germany in any way can be licensed by GEMA (the only German collecting society) to AI training. Even though if you as a musician are not a member of GEMA!

Musicians have to opt-out actively in written form (I did). If a piece has more than one composer, all composers must opt-out, otherwise licensing the music to AI training by GEMA is still legal. Yet the news hasn't spread about it, even though this regulation has been active since about one year now.

Short version:

sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

Then reboot.

EDIT: Using OBS from the OBS PPA now can use NVENC as GPU encoder up to 4:4:4 RGB h264, and also DaVinci Resolve works with CUDA and hardware OpenCL, and the NVENC encoder is also available in Shittyworks, pardon, Lightworks. The latter is sweet for exporting social media video as h265 quickly.

Ich formuliere es mal so: Der Mindestbeitrag für Freiberufler u.ä. in der gesetzlichen Krankenkasse ist in den letzten Jahren um 444€/Jahr gestiegen.

Die Versicherung fürs Haus ist um 15% teurer geworden seit 2023. Das Einkaufskonto für Lebensmittel ist monatlich früher leer als früher.

Dass alles immer teurer wird, ist ein ehernes Gesetz der Marktwirtschaft. Blöd wird's halt, wenn die Einkommenssituation nicht mitzieht.

Sparen ist gut für mich, aber schlecht für die Volkswirtschaft. Gebrauchtes Equipment geht nur noch ins EU-Ausland via Ebay. Das Sparen der Deutschen ist schlecht für mich.

Ich habe die rabattierten Tagessätze für Veranstaltungstechnik in der Kultur gestrichen. Da aber das Geld bei den Kommunen als häufigster Träger fehlt, kann das nach hinten losgehen.

Ich denke, 2 bis 3 Jahre Dürre sind noch zu überstehen.

In der Politik sehe ich zu dem Thema nur Tankrabatt-Verbrenner-Fetisch und sonst nix.

Nachdem es bei Ebay ab 1€ niemand wollte… nur hier im Fedi: Ich verschenke dieses #Solton / #Ketron #MS50, ein #Alleinunterhalter-Keyboard älterer Bauart mit einigen Abnutzungsspuren, jeodch voll funktionsfähig, und mit Case und einem Karton mit vielen Disketten dafür. Ja, es hat ein Diskettenlaufwerk.

Es hat MIDI und einen sich seltsam anfühlenden Aftertouch und natürlich Anschlagsdynamik.

AppImages cannot work with Pipewire properly.

The reason is that AppImages contain all libraries statically linked into themselves.

Pipewire works by switching the ALSA, Jack and Pulse libraries under the seat of the applications without them noticing.

(Pipewire does access the original ALSA itsself, but for all other apps, it replaces it.)

This replacement trick cannot work with AppImages. Technically impossible to my knowledge. Not the fault of Pipewire, but of the AppImage design principle.

I filed a ticket with OSM regarding the issue.

So, OSM will only work for ALSA devices (as it has old ALSA linked into it) that are not set to proaudio in Pipewire und thus not are exclusively blocked. Technically those will be accessed bypassing Pipewire.

It does not work very well.

The solution I didn't manage to do yet is to compile OSM yourself, not statically linked. But I do not understand their build syystem.

As far as I am concerned, it's hard to name a single top favorite, but here is one piece of glass that I really love to use: The MeiKe 35mm f1.7.

I believe this is based on old calculations for 35mm full frame lenses. It is fully manual and also fully made of metal, with a clickless aperture ring. It is not perfect. But there's quite a number of pictures over at Nielso Foto (npub1a92…ecqx) that I took using it and that I still like. This lens is below 80€ (new!) in Germany, which is redicoulous.

Dexed is not loosely based on the DX7. It even takes DX7 SysEx data. So, the GUI is not DX7, but the guts are very very DX7.

Unfortunately it is not distributed with UbuntuStudio any more, most like for Ubuntu-religions reasons. There is a download, though, from the nightly builds, also as CLAP and VST3 for Linux.

Meine #Tontechniker-Ohren arbeiten mal wieder irgendwie so monateweise Frequenzbereiche durch. Im Sommer waren sie noch mit dem Bereich um 5khz befasst, jetzt nervt mich das Meiste um 8khz.

Nein, nicht weil es zu viel ist. Sondern weil es verwaschen ist in so vielen Aufnahmen die ich habe, und weil ich jetzt überall die CDs neu rippen müsste als FLAC anstatt OGG/Vorbis. Was aber nur marginal was bringen würde, denn Schuld sind meistens frühe digitale EQs und allem voran billige Mikrofone für das Blech vom Schlagzeug.

Die Fliegen, die ich an der Wand furzen höre, werden immer kleiner.

Läuft bei mir.

Okay I found this magic command:

pactl load-module module-null-sink media.class=Audio/Source/Virtual sink_name=my-virtualmic channel_map=front-left,front-right

This will create a virtual device that can be seen by #Zoom and any #Pipewire / #PulseAudio app.

The device can be fed from Carla using #Patchance or other Pipewire patchbay tools. Carla then can be fed from your audio interface. Answers my question. (Carla using the #Jack interface.)

What's (relatively) easy on #Linux, but close to impossible on #Windows and #macOS?

Well. Enabling Hifi-Mode in Zoom, because you want to sound good. (You need headphones/earplugs in order to not create any echo.) That's easy on all major OSses.

But to get a nice and loud singal, you need to apply an audio limiter yourself then. Because Zoom won't do this for you then.

Luckily, with the #Pipewire audio system of Linux, it is possible to connect the #Carla plugin host between #Zoom and your #AudioInterface.

In my example, I use the #Limiter of #LinuxStudioPlugins. Audio comes in from a #Focusrite #Scarlett 2i2 from a #Sennheiser #Lavalier mic.

Tricky? Well, you can't select the output of Carla in Zoom. You need to patch it manually in a patchbay application such as #Patchance.

Ich hab ja hier noch diesen #Roland #JDXA #Synthesizer, der immer mehr den Spacker kriegt… ursächlich ist ein Spannungsregler, der immer mehr hops geht, außerdem ist die Schaltung wohl einfach Broken by Design.

Ein improvisierter Kühlkörper und ein nerviger Lüfter haben das Problem bisher in Schach gehalten, aber das geht nun auch nicht mehr gut. Foto zeigt den Übeltäter und die Kühlung.

Aber wie krieg ich das bestellte Ersatzteil, kaum Größer als 1mm, überhaupt dort rein?

Sinn macht es leider auch nur bedingt, da der Fehler immer wieder auftreten wird. Immer mehr Leute haben das Problem mit dem Gerät, Hersteller „weiß von nix”.

Ein Bekannter empfiehlt enthusiastisch eine Werkstatt in #Tübingen, aber die Ergebnisse dieser, die ich bisher gesehen habe, haben mich nicht überzeugt. Die gesamte Platine gibt's zwar noch bei Roland, wäre ab er sicher nicht billig.

After learning that the guy was talking about his old #Ensoniq #ESQ1, I said yes without even looking at it. It was made almost 40 years ago. It has 8bit #wavetable oscillators and analog Curtis filters.

As with old cars with a flat tire, you soon notice that the tire is not big problem at all… somebody had replaced the pcb-mounted battery by one floating around in there, being easier to replace. I ordered a replacement part.

It turned out, that most of the keys didn't work any more. Luckily the keyboard is a very simple construction. So I inhaled a lot of Kontakt60 vapours, and while I was at it removed the nicotine residues from everything using alcohol… until I got a bad headache.

Does anybodyknow if I can upgrade the #firmware of this #synthesizer using the version 3.5 chips available from Ebay? Or does it depend on PCB bord revisions?

Die Gattin des zuständigen Ministers war mit einem Hersteller von Fernsehkabeln verbandelt gewesen. Und auch in der Hoffnung auf CDU-nähere Berichterstattung wollte man das Privatfernsehen von Leo Kirch damals pushen. Am 17.12.2024 wurde unser Glasfaseranschluss in Betrieb genommen, über 40 Jahre danach.

Actually it's even slightly more differentiated in my life: I have a Pixelfed account (Nielso Foto (npub1a92…ecqx)) and I go to that Pixelfed instance also to see photographs I may enjoy. So I follow photographers on Pixelfed, but not here in Mastodon.

As if my mind was a very old computer having a “text mode” that is active when visiting Mastodon, and a “graphics mode” when on Pixelfed.

I watch music videos on YouTube actively. Meaning I search for certain things, and then I watch entire videos.

What doesn't work for me is browsing timelines and then switch into the mood for watching a full-length video.

However, YouTube's algorithm and search function recently has become so shitty that have trouble finding what I want to see and I virtually never get a recommendation that would really be of my interest. Even the search results are apparently dominated by the algorithm more than by the matching of keywords and results.

Wer seine eigene Musik bei #YouTube veröffentlicht, läuft Gefahr, dass lustige Chinesen ihm einen Copyright Claim reindrücken.

Also im Prinzip klauen die einfach die Musik von den Leuten, veröffentlichen sie unter neuem Namen auf #Spotify und damit gehören die Urheberrechte auch YouTube gegenüber technisch gesehen dem Dieb. Und der Original-Urheber auf YouTube kriegt Probleme.

Was kann man machen? Letztendlich nur schneller sein und mit jeder Veröffentlichung gleich bei YouTubes #ContentID mitmachen. Das geht mittlerweile sogar beim #CreativeCommons-Platzhirsch #Jamendo. Aber es bedeutet auch, dass man beim kommerziellen System von YouTube mitspielen muss.

Oder man muss sich einen Rechtsanwalt leisten, der weltweit Leute verfolgt.

Which is not very helpful for media production and other creative work, because who would store 500GB of photos in their $HOME, or even worse... some 7TB of video data for a film.

Need to check my future UbuntuStudio if Gimp comes as snap or not. Because often I "develop" photos using DigiKam from RAW, store them as PNG, and then continue in Gimp.

Which is also one of the few tools that is at all suitable for printing images, as you say.

Als Hifi-Enthusiast den Klang von Netzwerkkabeln zu beurteilen, und auch einen Unterschied zu finden, hat erstaunliche Parallelen zur derzeitigen Politik.

Man löst mit viel Aufwand/Geld Probleme, die es nicht gibt.

Teure Netzwerkkabel können zwar helfen im Vergleich zu ultimativ lausigen Billig-Kabeln, aber sonst bewirken sie exakt nichts.

Die Diskussion um die eigentlichen Probleme bleibt hingegen aus.

Dante AudioOverIP schickt ein Clock-Signal (PTP Clock) an alle Geräte im Netzwerk. Dann müssen noch die Audio-Daten pünktlich ankommen (= der Jitter auf der Leitung so gering, dass jedes Sample innerhalb seines Zeitfensters beim DA ankommt). 4 Kanäle Dante beanspruchen etwa 6mbit/sec.

Ungeeignete Switches sind in der Regel das Problem bei Dante. Aber nein, wir kaufen lieber ein Kabel, das teurer ist als ein geeigneter Switch.

So und jetzt zu Abschiebungen, Grenzkontrollen und Förderung von Flugtaxis und unseren eigentlichen Problemen in der Gesellschaft…

Es ist eine postfaktische Welt.

Das war ja klar… seit #Dante #AudioOverIP bei den #Hifi-Begeisterten ankommt, testen die auch den Klang verschiedener Netzwerkkabel.

Während Hifiologen noch die richtige, speziell angefertigte, superteure Kupferstrecke suchen, nehmen #Veranstaltungstechnik|er bei großen Events lieber Glasfaser. Den Bytes ist das natürlich eh alles egal, solange sie pünktlich ankommen.

1,5m Netzwerkkabel kosten dann halt… beim Hifi-Händler… 115€.

Mit so Leuten braucht man als #Tontechniker keine Diskussionen anzufangen.

Ein CAT-Kabel in Bügeleisenkabeloptik wirkt auf den Klang von digitalem Audio nicht über den Placebo-Effekt hinaus.

In der Nachbarstadt wurde eine Bäckereifachverkäufverin-Azubine abgeschoben – mitsamt Familie.

Im Nachbardorf schloss die Bäckereifiliale wegen Personalmangel.

In einer Mitarbeiterversammlung erfahre ich als begleitender Veranstaltungstechniker: Fast die Hälfte der Belegschaft geht in Rente, Ersatz schwer zu finden – Überstunden stehen an, sagen die Chefs.

Politik und Pöbel wählen die Abschiebung und den Fremdenhass.

USB-C Kabel, die nur zum Aufladen von Handys taugen (aber keine Daten übertragen)

USB-C Kabel, die auch Laptops gescheit aufladen können (aber keine Daten übertragen)

USB-C Kabel, die nur USB 2 Daten übertragen können (aber keine Laptops aufladen)

USB-C Kabel, die vermutlich USB 3, aber kein HDMI übertragen können

USB-C Kabel, die USB 3.2 können

USB-C Kabel, die in Wirklichkeit Thunderbolt-Kabel sind und nebenher auch USB machen (alle o.g. können kein Thunderbolt)

Wie schön vereinfachend: Sie nutzen alle den gleichen Stecker.

So, und jetzt kauf da mal treffsicher ein Kabel für deinen Zweck.

Kein Mörderfilm, erm Marderfilm.

Da Männer (m/w/d) Spielzeuge mögen, hab ich mir so ein billige „Wildtierkamera“ mit Bewegungsmelder und Infrarotgedönse beim Chinesen gekauft (via böser Bezos) und erhoffte, damit herauszufinden, wo eigentlich das Loch ist, über das der vermaldeite #Marder ins Dach einsteigt in unserem #AbenteuerAltbau.

Ergebnis: Etliche Katzenvideos wurden aufgezeichnet.
