I love this bit of brickwork in the Garnethill area of Glasgow. It's a glazed brick wall with a curved corner transitioning to a sharp right-angle mid-way through a single brick, and it's apparently called a Lark's Tongue. I've no idea if it bears any resemblance to an actual lark's tongue!

The artwork was added to the building during a re-development by CRGP Ltd which help save it from the threat of demolition. Despite being by a major international artist (Subirachs worked on Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona), few people give it a second glance as they hurry past it, if they even notice it at all.

An inverse bust by the Catalan artist Josep Maria Subirachs inserted into the wall of the 1842 former Stockwell Chapel of Ease on Howard Street, behind the St Enoch Centre in Glasgow.

The bust is designed in such a way as to fool the brain, and as a result as you walk past it, it suddenly changes from disappearing into the wall to standing out from it and before flipping back again.

With the Lyrid Meteor Shower reaching its peak tonight, it's worth remembering Glasgow's place in the discovery of that meteors originated from outer space. In April 1804, a meteorite was seen to land at High Possil in the north of the city (a fragment of which is shown on the right in this photo). This was the first one ever recorded in Scotland, and it became one of the first any where in the world to be scientifically verified as coming from space.

This rather brilliant grotesque is set into a wall in front of the former Superintendent's House in Overtoun Park in Rutherglen, just to the south of Glasgow.

It's one of three similar grotesques which are thought to have originally come from Overtoun House near Dumbarton. Lord Overtoun, who owned the house, donated the land on which Overtoun Park now stands to make up for the contamination from his White's Chemical Works.

Designed by Bell and Miller, it was made by the Sir William Arrol Iron and Steel Works and it opened in 1891. The original entrance to Kelvinbridge Subway Station (now in a standalone building to the left of this shot) was in the ground floor of the tenement just to its right.

This mid-19th Century Early English Gothic church, which is now part of the Renfield Centre, is as impressive inside as out, and features this rather beautiful modern stained glass window.

This included adding a monogram consisting of a interlocking pair of Cs above the entrance at the base of the stair tower, which stands for Catherine Cranston who commissioned the redevelopment as part of the tearoom she operated in this building.

On the left is the Ca'D'Oro, another listed building at the same junction, which was gutted by a fire 1987, but was successfully rebuilt within a couple of years, although it has an iron facade which made this much easier to achieve.

This is not a good scene to wake up to, but at least no one in the building or any firefighters were hurt. The neighbouring Central Station, a key element of Victorian Glasgow and an important hub for modern communters, is closed, but is hopefully unharmed.

After yesterday's fire, the familiar dome of the 175 year old Union Corner building is gone, as is the facade which once stretched down Union Street to Caledonian Chambers (where there is a side entrance to Central Station). In this case, it's a firm of plumbers, brassfounders and gasfitters established by Archibald Watson in 1833 which went on to become one of the best known plumbing and gas-fitting firms of its age and was based at 86 George Street.

Now, almost six years after the second fire, and more than a decade after the first, it's still a literal shell of its former self, encased in scaffolding to protect what's left. And so, one of the pinnacles of Scotland's architecture and a key part of Glasgow's built heritage remains in limbo, looking more like a modern art installation than the Art Nouveau gem it once was, and will, hopefully, one day be once more.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Art Nouveau Glasgow School of Art Building. One of the most architecturally important buildings in Scotland, it was severely damaged in a fire in 2014, and then restored, but before it could be re-occupied by students, there was a second fire in 2018 which caused even worse damage. Unfortunately, various legal wranglings prevented a second restoration from starting promptly.

Love this trompe-l'œil style mural on the ground floor of an exposed tenement gable in the Linthouse area of Glasgow. The adjoining tenement, which would have completed a residental block enclosing an internal back court, was demolished to make way for the southern entrance to the Clyde Tunnel, which opened in 1963.

I love this sculpture of a steam locomotive over the door of James Miller's 1903 North British Locomotive Company offices in the Springburn area of Glasgow. I particularly like the detail of the blocks and chains on either side, which were used to haul the completed locomotives through the streets of Glasgow and load them onto ships using the Finnieston Crane so they could be exported all over the world.

My long run today took me up along the Forth and Clyde. Canal, where there's always an interesting sight or two to be had, but this morning's run was a bit of a special one for me. For some still unknown reason (alcohol might possibly have been involved!), at the start of 2021 I set myself the seemingly unlikely target of running a half marathon around the streets of Glasgow every month for the next 60 months. Today, I completed number 60!

Created in 1979, it was the first astronomically aligned stone circle built in Scotland in over 3,000 years. This is a beautiful little building with an unexpected historical connection. It's 20 Cambridge Street in Glasgow and it was desiged in a Venetian style by Duncan McNaughtan. Built in 1884, at one time it was a warehouse for William Thomson, better known as Lord Kelvin, one of greatest 19th Century scientists who is now best remembered for his work on absolute zero, the lowest possible temperature in the universe. How cool is that?

Love this old Guinness advert mural of the old Crown Flour Mills cart entrance on Washington Street in Glasgow. It's beeb painted on the wooden board which covers it, and you can still see the ghost signs for the mill above it.

The original poster was created by the artist John Gilroy, who worked for the advertising agency S.H. Benson. The Guinness for Strength campaign was first launches in 1934.

I love this gushet building on the corner of Argyle Street and Minerva Street in Glasgow. Despite its granduer, I suspect many people drive or walk past it every day without really taking in its true beauty. Thought to have been designed by Alexander Kirkland, it's the most impressive building in a pretty much untouched 1850s tenement streetscape in the west of the city that is an important, but under appreciated, part of its architectural heritage.
