Hi - I'm necro-replying because I'm preparing a box of a few things to go to the Internet Archive, and I'm reading the page you gave me and got to this part:

"If your donation is a few boxes or less and you have already confirmed we do not have your media already please pack into sturdy boxes of a consistent size, label all boxes as “MISC Deduped” and their media type"

Does that mean I have to put every article in its own box? It will be prohibitively expensive for me to ship if so. It's the floppy disks, book, some 5.25" floppy disks, and a user manual.

I've seen image comparisons between these and Sony Mavicas, and these take worse pictures, despite the higher resolution and lower compression that the format afforded. The later 1.2 MP and 2.1 MP Mavicas just had better optics and image processing.

I can archive the disks using Adfread, but I don't want to put in the work to scan the book, so I'd rather send it all off to someone who is willing to do that work.

I spent all afternoon and evening playing with the Videonics DirectED Plus (albeit not actually getting to the point of editing with it lol), and there's good news and kinda surprising news.

The good news is it works fine, although it initially didn't. Although it booted from the Getting StartED tape, the power LED didn't light up and it didn't respond to the remote control. I opened it up and re-seated the connector going to the front panel, and the socketed chips. One of those things got it up and running.

This is powered by an NEC V40 microprocessor, which is software-compatible with the Intel 80188.

I decided to do a test and made a recording on the Sony CCD-TRV66 Hi8-XR camcorder, and then digitized it two different ways - by sticking the tape in a Digital8 camcorder and doing a DV transfer, and by connecting the S-Video output of the Hi8 camcorder itself to the new Betacam capture setup.

This is the comparison. The Hi8 cam seems to reproduce a wider luma range, and I think maybe the picture is a tad sharper? Although I think it's largely overshadowed by this camcorder's rather noisy imager. Not sure if I prefer the look of the ProRes capture. I'm curious if anyone has any opinions.

Video8 and Hi8 have low chroma resolution, similar to VHS, so the stakes of transferring via DV aren't as high as with Betacam.

Built-in modems were more-or-less standard equipment on home computers sold from the late 1990s to the late 2000s. These modems range from hardware-based units similar to serial modems, to softmodems that depend on the host computer's processing power to function, sometimes to the detriment of reliability and quality.

I've had twenty-two such modems sitting in a box for a few years. In this video we will look at each one, and fully test it by calling other modems within my internal telephone network, as well as calling a BBS over a VoIP telephone line. For the 56K modems, I will call a 56K-capable dial-up access gateway. The results seen herein show a vast range of quality from one modem to the next.
