I'm saying diversity without toppling oppressive power structures is, at best, a cosmetic fix. A brown CEO would sooner bend to capitalism before capitalism bends to them.

"Non-violence" in the Civil Rights era dictates we not retaliate violently after we disrupt the status quo. It's sitting in a "whites only" diner, disciplined not to react when coffee is thrown in our face.

No Kings has no equivalent to sitting in a whites only diner. Instead, it dictates that we stand outside with a sign demanding the things we aren't willing to take.

I keep reading Letter From a Birmingham Jail. Dr. King lays out the purpose of a protest. I can't help but notice how divorced the #NoKings movement is from those tenants.

If a protest doesn't have a call to action or a means of pressure to bring decision makers to the negotiating table, then it's not a protest. It's a gathering.

I fear so much of mainstream "direct action" is a way to keep us busy and feeling accomplished. We don't know any better because we don't have real activist leaders.

Did the protest organizer work with cops to set the location of your protest? If so, it's all but guaranteed that location is ideal for trapping you in there.

If you're trapped, you're more susceptible to whatever tactics cops want to employ.

Reduce the amount of identifiable information—take off piercings and jewelry, cover tattoos, put your hair back.

Costumes are, generally, a terrible idea for a march. If you must, wear it before or after, and change clothes.

You probably shouldn't take your phone with you but, you'll need to decide the risk/reward.

If you do, turn it off. That won't necessarily protect you from tracking, but it locks your phone forcing a PIN number to open.

If you don't have your phone off, and you're greeted by police, turn off your phone immediately for the reason above.

I don't know every law in every state, but most don't protest biometrics as privacy. Cops can compel you to open your phone with a fingerprint or face.

Parable of the Sower is the only book I've read where I can, at any moment, revisit the locations Octavia Butler described. Lauren's childhood neighborhood, the derelict city streets, desolate highways, the farm with the big tree. Nothing before or since made me feel like I was part of the story. The world building and character development are unmatched. It's a beautiful read.

And that's why I think the first couple of migrations didn't work out. People weren't coming to Mastodon as much as they were fleeing Twitter. That's what made Bluesky so immediately sticky. It was just like Twitter. It met people's expectations.

The more people come to Mastodon (or the greater Fediverse, etc.) looking for something different, the better their initial experience will be. You'd be surprised how many barriers people will clear with the proper motivation, right?
