I've written this here over the past few weeks and it grows daily. Israel is as weak as it has ever been. While Germany and a few other countries announce deals for Israeli weapons, Israel has only the conditional support of the Trump administration. Israel does not control reality on the ground, despite the killing and the prevention of aid.

Gaza has been internationalized. Israelis have happily stopped caring and have retreated inside the walls of the asylum, mounting productions for their own benefit. The military dictatorship in the West Bank is also imploding, with settlers taking over and the only law being murderous violence. Israeli oppression is no longer sustainable as a status quo. Israel must make a decision - go for full, overt dictatorship or accept an imposed settlement.

This is not to suggest that anything is being done on behalf of the Palestinians. There is a confluence of material and strategic interests that benefits many players, not fealty to IHL or even a reckoning with regard to the genocide. But Israel really has exceeded all limits of stratefic narcissism. Even the US doesn't trust Israel, and that trend is also growing. Scores are being settled. Israel can and should blame itself alone.

I've been asked several times recently how Netanyahu's statement that there will be no Palestinian state can be reconciled with the Trump 20-point plan which "lays the groundwork" for a Palestinian state. The obvious answer is that both the Trump plan and Netanyahu's statement are not binding in any way. That is, of course, the truth.

Still, I think there is a deeper answer. The Trump plan and the rapid internationalization of Gaza on the ground should not be judged for substantive content just yet, but for the break they represent with the eternal status quo. Essentially, Israel is being rebuffed on two of its most contentious fronts.

Trump is telling Israel what to do. He is also clearly expressing his pro-Israel bias. Still, he is not backing down. True, American weapons are still empowering Israel. And yet, Israel has not been allowed to return to its default genocidal mode. While Israel continues to massacre Palestinians, such massacres now represent a roguish extreme rather than the new normal. Israel knows only killing. This is now seen as an obstacle and not as self-defense. There is no consolation to be found here. There is very little hope. But there is a change to a status quo that once seemed immutable.

The rapid internationalization of Gaza (and make no mistake; despite Israeli resistance, Israel will accept Turkish presence as well as other state contingents in Gaza sooner rather than later) violates what has always been a very basic tenet of Israeli faith with regard to the "conflict". Israel has always radically opposed internationalization and for good reason. Once Israel is denied full and summary discretion, Israel's occupation and oppression will crumble. They are built on maintaining Israel's military dictatorahip as a black hole that sucks in and obliterates any attempt at scrutiny or reassessment of "security considerations".

So, two major changes to a seemingly untouchable status quo. Integrate them with unprecedented events like American politicians returning AIPAC donations (Seth Moulton in Massachusetts, for example) and Israeli football fans being denied entry to a European match, and a pattern begins to present itself. It is morally reprehensible that the line Israel appears to have crossed is one of personal gain and interest and not one of humanity. That said, Israel has crossed a line. It cannot be uncrossed.

Now that the line is clearly drawn, Israelis don't even need to feign discernment or discretion. If you are on the other side of the line, you are a terrorist. If you are a terrorist, you'll get what's coming to you one way or the other. Israelis will be happy to help in any number of ways, all fixated on the integrity of the line. Supposedly, the line ensures the existence of both parties on both sides. Effectively, Israelis are the only ones who truly exist. Now we have proof. The very fact that you are on the other side means you are dead.

Reading Israeli social networks this morning, you could believe the most important thing in the world was whether the liberals were right to boo Netanyahu in Tel Aviv when Witkoff was speaking about the former's "sacrifice" in ending the war. The fact that more than 300 names have already been added to the death toll in Gaza after one night of sifting through the rubble (with nearly bare hands) has not registered. Israelis are back, incessant as ever. We were bone-tired just a day ago, full of pessimism and negative prospects. But now, now that our goal (returning the hostages - 20 will return alive and this is presented as an achievement) has been achieved, we can return to the only topic that has ever really interested us - ourselves.

The IDF continues to kill because "he who watches over Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep" (Psalm 121:4; we tend to confuse God with our military). Israeli commentators are already talking about the upcoming elections. The liberals are saying Netanyahu must go (!) but they also "understand" that despite the desirability of a government that includes Israeli Palestinians, it won't happen this time around (thus enforcing Israel's status as an apartheid state). The right is talking about Israel's responsibility to be a Jewish state and about the "miracles" we witnessed in Iran and Lebanon (remember our proclivity for confusion).

Gaza doesn't exist until "they" return "our" hostages and will stop existing once "they" do. The genocide was unfortunate but no one has a better plan and Douglas Murray brings up some incisive questions. Everything has collapsed but nothing has changed. This isn't strength or conviction; this is disssociation and despair.

Israel is systematically ramming, boarding, blocking and debilitating the Sumud Flotilla. This is done under cover of darkness, on Yom Kippur, when Israel once fought a war for its survival. None of this is legal under any international charter or covenant. The great IDF, incapable of achieving (and defining) "victory" in its genocide of the Palestinians, has all the time and resources it wants to carry out a mendacious, despairing "war on terror" against dozens of boats manned by the bravest of the brave.

There is a direct relationship between Israeli apathy and Israeli murderousness. It is difficult to register at times, because one expects murderousness to be fulfilled with glee or, at the very least, a sense of focused purpose. More often than not, that is not the case in Israel.

The more resigned Israelis are to their faith - "the world hates us, Palestinians want to kill us" - the more assenting they are as genocidaires. Resignation is key to legitimizing genocide. It isn't fervent ideological conviction among most Israelis. It is about (as our illustrious PM said at UNGA) the tough going as the going gets tough. Israelis can delude themselves with myriad excuses, from the Islamization of Europe to the "urgency" of attacking Iran. Most Israeli Jews know these are lies. The main delusion is that Israel will be "forgiven", that "this too shall pass", that the world will come to its senses and realize that sometimes good people do bad things. I understand that the hasbara angelic choir is finding fault with the UNCoI report claiming Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. The main reason is that the CoI states that Israel knew it would kill Palestinian civilians and still killed them, and that doing so over a long period of time amounts to both genocidal intent and action. What say the hasbara brainiacs? You know in every where that civilians will be killed and yet not every war is a genocide.

That is a facetious, mendacious argument. It conveniently misses out on the temporal dimension. Israel has not simply "killed civilians". It has killed civilians repeatedly, consciously, systematically. It has killed civilians after actively lifting the protections accorded to civilians under international humanitarian law. Imagine a man who hit his spouse. Would the man be guilty of the same crime if he hit his spouse 10 times and if he hit his spouse 100000 times? He would not.

The CoI stated common sense. Intent and action can be deduced not just from statements but from patterns of regularity. Throughout its campaign in Gaza Israel has operated with genocidal regularity. The fact that Israel has decreed that all these deaths are justified because it must "destroy Hamas" and the "collateral damage" is under Hamas responsibility, that fact is based on lies at every level.

Israel has no right to "destroy" anyone. Israel and Israelis have admitted to killing civilians with absolutely no compunction. Not a single Israeli has been found guilty of killing civilians. These all demonstrate Israel's lies. They are based on a single premise - Jewish blood is worth more than Palestinian blood. That is the only reason that allows Israel to suggest that common sense - if you do something regularly, thoroughly, in prolonged fashion, that suggests you actually say what you mean and so what you say - is antisemitism. She told me she had recently gotten divorced and that her ex would gaslight her continuously.
