And the TCP slow-start trick with split + parallel downloads is wild :)

Just one quick clarification: the blog isn't mine, I just shared the link because I enjoyed the article. The author is Dave (ratfactor.com), and he's on Mastodon at [@ratfactor@mastodon.art](https://mastodon.art/users/ratfactor ) If you have corrections or things you'd like to see added to the article itself, reaching out to him there would be the best way.

But please keep the comments coming here, I'm learning a lot from them!

Slackware 15.0 is often called “outdated,” but the ChangeLog tells a different story.

Since release, 15.0 has received not only security fixes, but also new packages and updates that match or closely track
Slackware-current (glibc-zoneinfo, curl, kernel firmware, and Mozilla ESR/SeaMonkey).

It also maintains supported versions of PHP in its extra directory and updated Rust in testing to support modern software.
What diverges in -current is mostly graphics stacks, toolchains, and desktop layers.

Slackware 15.0 is not frozen -- it is maintained by design.

#slackware #linux #unix #opensource

There’s no lifecycle connection to slackpkg -- by design.

That said, I’ve been experimenting with tagfiles as a deliberate project rather
than a convenience feature. I actively use this approach for a jump machine at
work, built on Slackware-current, and I keep the tagfiles updated as -current
evolves.

The cost is exactly what you describe: manually auditing dependencies and keeping
the set coherent over time. There’s no automation here -- just careful review and
explicit decisions.

In other words, tagfiles can scale -- but only if you accept that dependency
resolution becomes a human responsibility, not something Slackware tries to
infer or automate.

In practice, I treat these systems as intentionally “finished”: slackpkg is
used conservatively, often without install-new, and changes are explicit and
reviewed. It’s not elegant, but it’s honest -- and very Slackware.

I’d love to see better tooling around this, but I’m also wary of solving it in a
way that undermines Slackware’s transparency. Your idea of exploring tagfile
support in slackpkg is interesting precisely because it raises that question.

For completeness: to detect dependencies when building and updating these
tagfiles, I rely on an existing Slackware helper script that scans for broken
library links. This script helps *identify* missing dependencies, but it does
not resolve them or make decisions -- the review remains manual.

Script (by mozes@slackware.com, 2010):
https://git.sr.ht/~r1w1s1/slackware-scripts/blob/main/find-whatneedsrecompiling

Tagfiles repo (Slackware-current, used in practice, shared as reference):
https://git.sr.ht/~r1w1s1/slackware-tagfiles

Slackware exists as a moral reference in the Linux ecosystem.
Not to be popular -- but to remind us what matters.

Transparency over abstraction.
Stability over novelty.
Responsibility over convenience.

This video explains why Slackware is loved even when not used daily:
transparent design, stable behavior, no silent changes -- and the honest trade-off of time for control.

https://yewtu.be/watch?v=R-gJ7aJJnqg

#Slackware #Linux #Unix #Philosophy

I’ve been exploring a more minimalist approach in my tools lately, and part of that includes trying to use nvi more often instead of Vim. To make the transition easier (for myself and anyone else interested), I put together a simple nvi quick reference:

https://4c6e.xyz/nvi.html

It’s not meant to be exhaustive, just a practical guide to help get things done with a lighter touch.

#nvi #vi #vim #minimalism

I finally managed to organize my keybindings. Some were scattered across my TWM config, but I decided to centralize everything
in .xbindkeysrc for simplicity.

I also compiled a few packages from SlackBuilds for Slackware, including guile 2.2, xbindkeys, brightnessctl, and dmenu.

Here the file :)
https://brew.bsd.cafe/r1w1s1/dotfiles/raw/branch/main/.xbindkeysrc
#Slackware #twm

Slackware love! ❤️ For those who appreciate simplicity and the power of foundational Unix tools, Slackware's package management is a beautiful thing. It's all pure shell scripts (installpkg, removepkg, upgradepkg) – transparent and easy to understand. #Slackware #Linux #Unix #Shell
