"The real question is not whether humanity can engineer better money. We already have. The real question is whether the capacity to build still survives beneath the scar tissue of fiat thinking, short-termism, and performative hustle. Whether somewhere beneath the algorithmically managed personalities and dopamine economies, there still exists a builder. A true craftsman immune to the virtue signaling bug."

Very deep and introspective piece Kudzai (nprofile…wmlp) 👏🏻💜

quoting
naddr1qq…7n2y

The Age of The Avatar

We are living in perilous but exciting times. Life today has now become a composite of experiences captured in images and videos that fit neatly on a social media reel. Everything is perfect, every smile is perfect, every moment unforgettable and everyone is happy as they live their “best life”. Where is the peril in all this, you may ask? This seems like a purely blissful existence does it not? Well, hardly so because it’s all fake. Welcome to the society of Virtue Signalers, a civilization where to most people the truth doesn’t matter, beauty is desecrated and goodness is destroyed. Instead the concern has shifted to how many clicks something can generate or how good it will look “on the gram” as that will ensure a quick path to monetization of the well curated illusions. Ours is no longer an age of authenticity, but the age where instead of living life to the full, it has been turned into a performance for the applause by a faceless audience.

In this virtue signal driven society, a place drowning in shallowness and fakeness, where most people are just actors selling an avatar assembled from borrowed opinions, filtered photographs, synthetic outrage, and algorithmically optimized compassion. Men don’t wake up with strong convictions or beliefs about anything but are more driven by parroting opinions that will preserve their employability. Comfortable and safe opinions that don’t rock the boat thus changing nothing. Where men of old arose to conquer the mighty oceans and sail to distant lands; the virtue signalers of today prefer sipping their almond milk lattes in their blue lit cubicles while endlessly doom scrolling, gently drifting into a life of nothingness.

When Altruism Becomes A Costume

As if that’s not enough, even altruism and activism have become nothing but a court jester’s costume. So called climate activists that endlessly lecture us about carbon footprint shamelessly fly their private jets from one climate conference to the next, then we have social justice warriors that scream equality while embezzling donor funds for the purposes of financing their lavish lifestyles and not forgetting the billionaires that advise the people to get vaccinated while simultaneously being big time investors in the pharmaceutical companies manufacturing the vaccines they peddle. The masses find all this nonsense to be fascinating and gladly do as they are told, without questioning the apparent contradiction. After all, these are their infallible idols and experts talking and the incongruency between their words and actions don’t matter. Why should it? No one is perfect right?

The Counterfeiting Engine

Beneath this digital hallucination sits the greatest counterfeit engine of the modern world: Fiat money. Money detached from reality that is borrowed into existence. A piece of green cotton, or worse, a number on a server farm in Virginia, that the virtue signaling society has agreed to pretend is solid. Value conjured from nothing by bureaucrats in marble buildings who speak in euphemisms while quietly stealing the lifeblood of entire generations.

They print; you toil. They inflate; you decay. They borrow; you get taxed. The modern economy is a casino where the currency itself is rigged. Yet people still worship it. They sacrifice marriages for it, trade their health for it and then spend it trying to recover their health and their relationships for it in the vain hope that the appearance of success will earn the respect of people that they don’t particularly like. They crawl through traffic before sunrise to labour in the concrete jungle plantations where they sell their precious time in exchange for a promissory note created from central-bank inspired hocus pocus and backed by nothing but the promise of men who have broken every promise. And what happens when they finally acquire this mythical treasure? When the ambitious virtue signaler reaches the summit of fiat success? Nothing. Absolutely nothing, and the silence is worse than the hunger.

The struggle gave you a reason to wake up and the climb gave you an identity. Once you own the mountain? Once the fiat has purchased all the distractions it can buy? You look in the mirror and see a ghost with a good credit score. 40 years of your life gone and spent climbing a ladder that was leaning against the wrong wall. You are rich, and you are worthless. You are free, and you have nowhere to go. The money did not buy the meaning. You suddenly discover that you are the same person in a nicer room, with better wine, drowning in the same questions, only now with fewer excuses to avoid them. That is the curse of fake wealth. It doesn’t buy happiness. It buys the absence of poverty, and absence is not a life. It’s just a vacuum and nature abhors a vacuum. So you fill it with more stuff. More passive consumption, but to no avail because man cannot survive on consumption alone. A creature built for meaning cannot be satisfied by accumulation.

A Civilization Medicating Itself

Despite all the false glitz and glamour, the virtue signaler is a haunted creature, as there is nothing that corrodes the soul faster than a fake and pretentious life. A faker surrounded by fakers, an army of mannequins complimenting each other’s masks. Their unique identity, totally swallowed and dissolved. Basically a lighthouse in a bathtub that shines so brightly, but illuminating absolutely nothing. The story gets worse when they look at the others like them. They see their flawless grief, their calculated spontaneity, their sponsored vulnerability and they quickly realize that they too are looking at them with the exact same hollow dread. A hall of mirrors reflecting nothing but the absence of light. A coincidence of terrified egos, all drowning in the same shallow pool, each one convinced the others know how to swim. Such is the community of virtue signalers.

Where men of old built magnificent cathedrals, explored the stars, composed symphonies and built monuments that have lasted for centuries, the virtue signaler today quietly refreshes their analytics dashboard every five minutes, hoping against hope that enough strangers online validate his breakfast photograph. Is this what we dare call progress? Everywhere you go, it’s all endless dopamine hits; infinite entertainment as a sedative for this painful existence, infinite consumption to satiate their vices and infinite distraction to numb the pain of confusion and meaninglessness. A civilization desperately medicating itself against the horror of its own spiritual emptiness. People no longer live lives, instead they consume them.

Scroll down, swipe right, swipe left, click click click, order, play, play again. Binge. Repeat. Consumption is the opiate of the masses. We don’t need bread and circuses anymore. We have content. An endless, beige, algorithmic slurry of hot takes, rebooted franchises, and true crime documentaries that turn the agony of real women into your Tuesday evening entertainment. You watch a series about a serial killer, then you scroll past a genocide, then you buy a candle that smells like a library. All within sixty seconds. All with the same flat, dead-eyed click. You have perfected the art of feeling without acting. It is necrophilia for emotions. You cuddle the corpse of empathy so you don’t have to breathe life into it. Thoughts and prayers. The two most cowardly words in the English language. A spell you cast to ward off the terrifying responsibility of doing something hard.

What tool did you use to build this exquisite mausoleum of the self? Technology, namely the smartphone. The great emancipation that became the great manacle. We were promised flying cars and a four-hour work week, but instead we were given a rectangular leash that vibrates in our pocket. Oh, it’s a miracle, is it not? The sum of human knowledge, accessible in a heartbeat! The smartphone was sold as liberation. “Connection,” they said, but what did it connect us to? To anxiety, total surveillance, constant dopamine addiction and the unbearable pressure of constant visibility. The machine promised freedom from labour. Instead, it transformed every human being into both prisoner and prison guard. You are no longer a citizen but you are a content machine to be harvested.

The Higher Revolution

It was precisely against this counterfeiting engine, the fiat system's capacity to steal time, corrupt incentives, and hollow out meaning that Bitcoin was invented. It arrived as a direct answer to the question the fiat world refused to ask: what if money could be made honest? For a generation who had watched institutions lie with impunity, Bitcoin was not merely a new asset. It was a lifeline. That said, even a genuine cure can become a new affliction in the hands of a spiritually hungry age.

The New Maximalism

While today we have Bitcoin, a money that was engineered to quantum leap all of fiat money’s inadequacies, the same virtue signaling trap is also a threat to bitcoiners too. Some have come to view Bitcoin as more than just a tool for financial sovereignty. Bitcoin became for a significant and vocal contingent not a means but an end. Instead of being viewed as a foundation on which to build a more honest civilization, it became the destination in itself. Due to their own internal emptiness and meaninglessness; they have made Bitcoin their god and saviour. Humans, when they encounter something true and rare and genuinely liberating, have a tendency to do one of two things: monetize it or worship it. A spiritually empty person can also transform the truth into theater. This too is vanity

Don’t get me wrong, Bitcoin is a magnificent tool. The excalibur for beheading the fiat leviathan, but a tool worshiped is an idol and every idol demands the same sacrifice: your capacity for wonder outside its domain. Whilst most may say they want financial sovereignty. That’s fine, but sovereignty is not a number on a ledger. It is the courage to take 100% responsibility for your own life, free from time theft by the counterfeiters, free to create and build without hindrance or interference from state sponsored malthusians, and free to say no to any form of tyranny. Unfortunately, the ledger cannot give you that. It can only store value and a life spent storing value, without generating meaning, is just a more disciplined version of the fiat rat race.

A technology created to liberate individuals from collective delusion can itself become another stage for collective vanity for the virtue signaling crowd. These folks accumulate Bitcoin not as sovereign individuals, but as status performers. They seek not freedom, but identity. They wrap themselves in Bitcoin maximalism the same way others wrap themselves in political ideology, luxury brands, or social justice slogans. The human ego is indeed infinitely adaptable. Destroy one idol and it manufactures another. Here is perhaps the most difficult truth of all; no technology can save a civilization suffering from spiritual rot. Not even Bitcoin, nor AI.

A man with no purpose will remain lost whether he holds inflated fiat currency or Bitcoin because meaning cannot be downloaded and neither can wisdom be tokenized. This is where the virtue signaling trap has ensnared some Bitcoiners, where they managed to correctly diagnose the corruption of the monetary system but failed to recognize the corruption within themselves. They fled the fiat empire while carrying the empire’s values inside their own souls.

Once again the axiom holds that one does not become truly free merely by changing currencies. He becomes free when he no longer needs applause to know who he is. That is the higher revolution, where you don't merely escape the corrupt fiat monetary system but you escape the counterfeit self. The one that wants to have without being and seeks the applause of men above all else. Otherwise Bitcoin itself risks becoming another luxury brand for the spiritually homeless people wandering through the ruins of modernity, having successfully escaped the fiat collapse but while remaining internally enslaved. This too is vanity.

Build The Cathedral

So here is the harder truth, Bitcoiner. The one you may not retweet. Your stack is not your soul, and your node is not your salvation. When all is said and done you will be left with exactly what the virtue signaler is left with, your own naked, unperformable, non-transferable self. If that self is empty, then orange-pilling the world will not fill it. You will simply become a hollow missionary of a hollow god and the future, the real future, not the one you meme into existence, will bury your cold wallet under the same rubble that swallows all idols. So by all means, use the tool. Reclaim your wealth from the counterfeiters, but for the love of whatever still burns in you, do not worship the tool, as this too is vanity

So here is the charge. To the Bitcoiners who found something real and are now in danger of turning it into another performance: build on it. Do not merely hold sound money while living hollow lives. Build with it. Build the thing that outlasts you. Build the cathedral no quarterly report can justify. Build the work that hides its signature in forgotten corners because the craft itself demanded excellence, not applause.

The real question is not whether humanity can engineer better money. We already have. The real question is whether the capacity to build still survives beneath the scar tissue of fiat thinking, short-termism, and performative hustle. Whether somewhere beneath the algorithmically managed personalities and dopamine economies, there still exists a builder. A true craftsman immune to the virtue signaling bug. A human being willing to dedicate himself to something bigger than themself that cannot be reduced to engagement metrics, exit valuations, or social status.

I believe there is. Somewhere, right now, in a workshop, a garage, a studio, or a mind not yet fully colonized by the machine, someone is still working patiently on something true that does not beg for attention, does not optimize for virality, does not scream for validation, but simply strives with everything it has, to be worthy. That person is the enemy of the system. That person is free because they have found a source of meaning that no central bank can inflate away, no algorithm can manipulate, no state can counterfeit, and no crowd can grant or revoke.

Go. Be that person.

People that I had known since kindergarten suddenly turned on me because I wasn't following the science and got worse once I started challenging the vaccine narrative. One of the most brutal things I have ever experienced to be honest but I'm glad it did happen, not every person is meant to have a permanent presence in your life.

I can't prove this yet, but it does seem to me that most shows, especially reality TV shows on Netflix are actually psychological experiments dressed up as entertainment. Take Love is blind for instance, both the contestants and the moderators continually refer to it "as an experiment", in every season. That in and of itself isn't a smoking gun, but the dynamics around the concept of the show (and others like it) have hallmarks of social engineering en masse.

Evil prevails when good men do nothing. The world we are living in today is mostly as a result of people who knew what was right and didn't do it. Food for thought.

quoting
naddr1qq…dvd7

There is a particular kind of cowardice dressed up in respectable clothes. It wears the face of politeness. Of staying in your lane. Of not wanting to cause trouble, not wanting to lose friends, not wanting to be the one who makes things awkward at the dinner table.

And it's destroying us.

I've watched people witness fraud and say nothing. I've watched professionals nod along to policies they knew were wrong. I've watched entire communities look away while their neighbors were being crushed, by corrupt systems, by captured institutions, by outright lies dressed up as public health, public safety, public good. The machinery of control doesn't just rely on enforcers. It relies on bystanders. It needs your silence. It counts on it.

Simon & Garfunkel wrote about this in 1964. "Silence like a cancer grows" - four words that have aged into prophecy. They were writing about a society so seduced by comfort and spectacle that it had forgotten how to speak. How to really speak. Not perform, not signal, not post, but stand up, tell the truth, and accept the consequences.

That was sixty years ago. Look around.

We are living through a period of coordinated, institutionalized deception on a scale most people still can't bring themselves to name out loud. The financial system is built on debt that can never be repaid. The health system spent years prioritizing compliance over care and turning sickness into a business model. Governments surveil their own populations and call it safety. Platforms silence doctors, journalists, and ordinary people and call it moderation and safety. And most people, educated, decent, well-meaning people, said nothing. Some because they are scared. Some because they genuinely don't know. And some because knowing is uncomfortable, and comfort is addictive.

Silence is never neutral. Every time a person who knows the truth chooses not to say it, they hand a little more power to the people who are lying. Every time someone watches something wrong happen and looks away, they make it easier for it to happen again. The absence of resistance is a form of consent, whether we intend it that way or not.

What we need right now, urgently, are people willing to be inconvenient. Willing to be unpopular. Willing to lose something. Whistleblowers. Truth-tellers. The colleague who won't sign off on the report they know is falsified. The doctor who won't prescribe what they know is harmful. The journalist who won't kill the story. The ordinary person who refuses to pretend they didn't see what they saw, who won't turn a blind eye to violence, war crimes, and the extortion of fellow human beings.

This is a call for courage, the specific, unglamorous kind that shows up in small moments: the email you send anyway, the question you ask in the meeting, the post you publish knowing half your audience will push back.

Freedom and dignity are preserved by people. By individuals who decide that their integrity is worth more than their comfort, and that the future they want to live in is worth building, even when building it is hard.

Silence is a choice. And every day it continues, it compounds.

In the song (below) Paul Simon warns the crowd and tries to reach them, but his words fall like silent raindrops into empty wells. That image has stayed with me. Because that's what it feels like to speak when most people are afraid to join, or aren't ready to hear. And yet the speaking still matters. It plants something.

"Fools" said I, "You do not know\
Silence like a cancer grows\
Hear my words that I might teach you\
Take my arms that I might reach you"\
But my words like silent raindrops fell\
And echoed in the wells of silence

Every generation gets a moment where silence becomes a verdict. This is ours.

"The Sound of Silence"

Paul Simon, Simon & Garfunkel, 1964.\
Listen to this remake by Disturbed.

Hello darkness, my old friend\
I've come to talk with you again\
Because a vision softly creeping\
Left its seeds while I was sleeping\
And the vision that was planted in my brain\
Still remains\
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone\
Narrow streets of cobblestone\
'Neath the halo of a street lamp\
I turned my collar to the cold and damp\
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light\
That split the night\
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw\
Ten thousand people, maybe more\
People talking without speaking\
People hearing without listening\
People writing songs that voices never share\
No one dared\
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools" said I, "You do not know\
Silence like a cancer grows\
Hear my words that I might teach you\
Take my arms that I might reach you"\
But my words like silent raindrops fell\
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed\
To the neon god they made\
And the sign flashed out its warning\
In the words that it was forming

And the sign said, "The words of the prophets\
Are written on the subway walls\
And tenement halls\
And whispered in the sounds of silence"

Raw milk is just milk that doesn't need to be qualified but because in a world where pasteurized milk is more dominant in the marketplace, the real has to be qualified with the label "raw". That's what it makes it easy to make it look weird. No one wants to be the weirdo that is consuming food raw like a savage. Smh

Tomorrow, the Metropolitan Police will turn biometric surveillance cameras on people attending a political demonstration in London.

Live facial recognition will scan the faces of those heading to the “Unite the Kingdom, Unite the West” rally in the borough of Camden, marking the first time the technology has been authorized for use at a protest in the UK. The rally was organized by activist Tommy Robinson who says the rally is for “national unity, free speech and Christian values.”

Drones will fly overhead, scanning for suspects from above.

More: “Nothing to Fear” Is Back: The UK High Court Clears Way for Police Facial Recognition (https://reclaimthenet.org/uk-high-court-clears-way-for-police-facial-recognition)

Deputy Assistant Commissioner James Harman said Live Facial Recognition (LFR) “will be deployed in the London borough of Camden in an area likely to be used by those attending the Unite the Kingdom event,” but a pro-Palestinian march marking Nakba Day, happening in London on the same day with an estimated 30,000 attendees, will not face the same biometric surveillance.

Biometric identification has jumped from high streets (https://reclaimthenet.org/greater-manchester-police-live-facial-recognition-launch-privacy-concerns) to political assembly and, once that barrier falls, the question is never whether it will be used more broadly. It’s when.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage responded to the deployment. “The Unite the Kingdom rally on Saturday should be treated no differently to the pro-Palestinian march on the same day,” Farage said. “The fact that two-tier justice is being applied against patriotic Britons is disgraceful.”

The Met justified its decision by citing “intelligence which indicates that there is likely to be a threat to public safety from some who might be in attendance.” It turns an entire protest into a surveillance zone based on the expected behavior of an unspecified portion of attendees. Everyone walking through Camden tomorrow afternoon gets their face compared against a watchlist, whether they’re a suspected criminal or someone who just showed up with a flag.

This deployment at a protest doesn’t exist in isolation. Two days before announcing LFR at the rally, the Met published results (https://news.met.police.uk/news/met-makes-one-arrest-every-35-minutes-during-live-facial-recognition-pilot-509256) from a six-month pilot in Croydon that signals where facial recognition in Britain is heading.

For the first time, the Met mounted live facial recognition cameras on lampposts and existing street furniture rather than using dedicated police vans.

Static cameras, monitored remotely, watched over Croydon’s high street from October 2025 to March 2026.

The move from van-based deployments to cameras bolted onto public infrastructure is a big deal. Vans are visible, temporary, and require a physical police presence. Lamppost cameras blend into the built environment and can be activated whenever officers decide they’re needed.

The Met’s numbers tell one story. The privacy cost tells another.

Over six months, the system scanned more than 470,000 faces. It produced 173 arrests across 24 separate operations. The Met presented this as one arrest every 35 minutes and claimed a 10.5% drop in local crime, including a 21% reduction in violence against women and girls.

Lindsey Chiswick, the national and Met lead for live facial recognition, said, “These results show why live facial recognition is such a powerful tool when it’s used carefully, openly and in the right places.”

She added, “We will continue using static cameras in Croydon as part of our regular live facial recognition deployments which play a vital part in keeping London safe.”

Run those numbers differently and they look less triumphant. Of the 470,000 people whose biometric data was captured and processed, 99.96% had nothing to do with any crime.

Approximately 2,717 people had to have their faces scanned and compared against police watchlists for every single arrest. The Met subjected an entire community to rolling biometric surveillance to catch people it could not find through real policing and it now plans to make that arrangement permanent.

Parliament has never voted on live facial recognition. No legislation explicitly regulates its use. Police forces write their own policies governing when and how they deploy it and the Met is now expanding from mobile vans to permanent cameras on public infrastructure with no democratic mandate for the change. The technology was introduced, tested, and normalized entirely outside parliamentary oversight.

Tomorrow’s deployment in Camden crosses another line. Facial recognition at a protest creates a biometric record of political participation, even if the data is supposedly deleted moments later.

People who might attend a lawful demonstration now know their faces will be captured and compared against police databases. Some will stay home. That is surveillance shaping who shows up to exercise democratic rights and the Met has decided it gets to choose which demonstrations trigger that effect.

Great article 💜 Digital IDs are going to strip folk of the little privacy they still have left and if they aren't challenged, things will get to a point where you will not be able to register a business, enrol your child in school, receive medical treatment if you don't have a digital ID. During the pandemic they already tested this out and the gvt already knows most people will comply in order to be comfortable.

quoting
naddr1qq…ud27

On the 13th of May, 2026, King Charles III stood before the assembled Houses of Parliament and, in his dutiful tone, announced that “My Ministers will also proceed with the introduction of Digital ID that will modernise how citizens interact with public services.” He said this a few months after nearly three million British citizens had signed a petition , the fourth-largest in the history of British democracy, the second-largest outside of Brexit, demanding that the government do precisely the opposite. Three million ordinary Britons who looked at what was being proposed and said, instinctively and emphatically no.

The government heard them and proceeded anyway. This is where things are today. If you think this is merely about a convenient app on your phone that lets you skip the queue at the post office, you have not been paying attention or rather, you have been paying exactly the kind of attention the architects of this system want you to pay: shallow, distracted, reassured by the word “voluntary” and the promise of frictionless public services.

The architects of Digital ID systems present their project in the language of rights and inclusion. You will be empowered to access services and protected from fraud, not to mention that you will be liberated from the onerous burden of carrying physical documents. The credential is yours and the system is voluntary. This language conceals a logical inversion of the first order.

A right, properly understood, is a claim that does not depend on permission. The right to speak, to move, to transact, to exist economically, these are not grants from the State, they are properties of persons that the State is supposed to protect, not administer. The moment your right to participate in the economy is mediated by a government-issued digital credential, it has ceased to be a right and has now become a license, and a license, by definition, can be revoked.

A Solution in Search of a Problem

Let us begin with the most basic question: what problem, precisely, does Digital ID solve?

You already have a passport and you already have a driver’s licence. You already exist in the ledgers of the state. You are not invisible and the government knows exactly who you are. So when they tell you that Digital ID is about identity verification, they are lying to you. This is not about confirming that you are who you say you are. That problem was solved decades ago. This is about something far more sinister, which is the consolidation of every fragment of your identity, your behaviour, your transactions, and your compliance record into a single, state-controlled digital profile that follows you from cradle to grave.

What you already have is irrelevant. That is the point. They are demanding that you surrender your analogue autonomy and accept, in its place, a digital identity that they control, that they can modify, that they can suspend, and that they can revoke.

Your Body as the Key

Every totalitarian architecture in history has been introduced with the language of efficiency. The Soviet propiska system, internal passports that controlled where citizens could live and work, was sold as population management. China’s Social Credit System was pitched as a tool to build a “harmonious society.” The vaccine passport was framed as a temporary public health measure to keep you safe, to keep grandma safe, to get us back to normal. Gradually with time it quietly morphed into the infrastructure for something else entirely; a proof-of-concept for permissioned movement, permissioned commerce, permissioned existence.

Here is the reality that the powers that be are actively obscuring; Digital ID does not merely identify you. It turns your body into the access key to your own life.

Your face, your fingerprints, your voice, your gait become the new keys. These are not passwords that can be changed should the database be breached. You cannot revoke them if the government abuses them. When your biometric data sits in a government database and that data is the key to accessing your bank account, your medical records, your benefits, your rental agreement, your right to work; your body has ceased to be your own property and has become state property. Your hand, your face, your eye, become the new interfaces between you and permission, and permission is granted by the state.

Every person is the sovereign owner of their own body. This is not a legal construct but it is a moral fact that precedes all law, all government, all social contract. You did not consent to be born into a political jurisdiction. Neither did you sign a document agreeing to have your biometric data harvested, stored, and used as the gatekeeper of your access to commerce and public life. The state has no legitimate claim on your body and any system that converts your biological uniqueness into a state-administered credential is an act of dispossession and enslavement. The abolitionists understood this. The horror of slavery was not merely forced labour, but it was the reduction of a person to an object of state-sanctioned ownership.

Digital ID does not enslave bodies in the old sense, but it converts the body into a node in a state-managed network, whose access privileges can be suspended, or revoked by bureaucratic decision. Just imagine a scenario where the Home Secretary or Minister of the Interior has the right to revoke your ID at any time. Your ability to withdraw money, to travel, to exist in the economy in the hands of a bureaucrat. Is that a world you want to live in? Is that the kind of world you want your children to live in?

The Voluntary Illusion

“It will be voluntary.” This sentence has appeared in every government briefing, every ministerial statement, every press release about the UK’s Digital Access to Services Bill. It has become a kind of liturgy, which is repeated often enough that the repetition is supposed to be a substitute for the truth.

Let us examine what “voluntary” means in practice. The government has already stated that digital ID will be used for right-to-work checks. Once employers are permitted to use it, even if not compelled to, the labour market will rapidly consolidate around it. Employers prefer it: it is faster, cheaper, legally indemnifying. Workers who refuse to provide digital ID will find themselves systematically disadvantaged. “Voluntary” will mean: you can refuse, but you will not get the job.

The same logic applies to every other service. Banks that are permitted to use digital ID for KYC (Know Your Customer) compliance will adopt it enthusiastically as it reduces their costs and legal liability. They will retain paper alternatives technically, but the customer service infrastructure for those alternatives will wither. The queues will be longer, more physical branches will close and the forms will be more onerous. “Voluntary” will mean: you can choose the harder path, but you will be punished for it in a thousand small, but plausibly deniable ways.

This is how coercion operates in a sophisticated administrative state. It does not need to issue a direct order but it has to make compliance convenient and refusal inconvenient and then expand the definition of “inconvenient” incrementally, over years, until the choice has effectively disappeared. The generation that comes of age after digital ID is normalised will not experience it as a constraint. They will experience its absence as an inconvenience; the same way Millennials experience cash payments, or the way anyone under thirty experiences a paper map. The infrastructure of coercion becomes invisible once it becomes ambient.

The validity of a choice is not determined by whether a coercive alternative exists, but by whether the choice is made without coercion in the first place. A system that makes refusal progressively more painful is not offering you a free choice. It is offering you a slow squeeze. The British government, which received three million signatures asking it not to build the squeeze mechanism, (based on King Charles’ proclamation) has decided that it knows better than three million of its own citizens what those citizens really need.

The Global Pattern

Britain is not alone in this. It is not even at the frontier. The EU’s digital identity wallet, the eIDAS framework, is already being rolled out across member states. India’s Aadhaar system, which biometrically enrolled over a billion people into a central database, has been linked to bank accounts, welfare payments, mobile phones, and tax records, creating exactly the comprehensive surveillance dossier that many lovers of liberty predicted and its architects denied. Canada’s federal government has also been developing a trust framework.

The citizen who imagines that a voluntary scheme launched by a progressive government in 2026 will remain voluntary under a different government in 2030 or 2034 or 2040 is making an astonishing bet, one that contradicts every lesson of political history. The powers built by one government are inherited by the next. The database built to verify your right to work will be available to the government that wants to verify your political associations. The infrastructure built to make your NHS appointment easier is the infrastructure that, under different management, tracks your attendance at protests and subtracts it from your social credit.

You do not get to control what future governments do with the infrastructure you allow current governments to build. You only get to decide whether the infrastructure gets built.

How Digital ID Exports Itself

Assuming that since you don’t live in the UK or Australia you need not be concerned about this, is self delusion of the highest order. These systems may be getting rolled out in isolation and in different pockets of the world but ultimately they are going to converge into what I call the “mark of the beast system” or the New World Order.

The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation applies, in law, only within the European Union. In practice, it applies to every company on earth that wants to sell to, employ, or process the data of a European citizen. A small software firm in Lagos, a retail business in São Paulo, an e-commerce startup in Bangalore; none of them are European entities, none of them are subject to EU law in any direct constitutional sense. Yet all of them have had to rewrite their privacy policies, appoint data protection officers, and restructure their data infrastructure because the alternative is exclusion from the European market. GDPR is, formally, a domestic regulation. Functionally, it is a global law imposed through market access.

Digital ID will follow the same pattern as outlined above. Digital ID slots into this architecture as its missing identity layer and once any major trading bloc makes it a verification standard for cross-border commerce, the voluntary fiction collapses entirely. The EU has already signalled that its digital identity wallet framework, the eIDAS regulation, will become the standard for accessing European digital services. The logic that follows is inescapable: if a British exporter wants to access an EU digital marketplace, and that marketplace requires eIDAS-compatible identity verification, then British businesses will need a compatible digital ID not because Parliament mandated it, but because the alternative is exclusion from trade.

The mechanism is always the same. First, the standard is embedded in the compliance requirements of the dominant trading bloc. Second, private companies like banks, logistics firms, insurers, supermarket chains, adopt the standard because their access to that bloc depends on it. Third, their counterparties anywhere in the world must meet the same standard as a condition of doing business with those companies.

The coercion never has to be direct. It travels through correspondent banking chains, supply chain due diligence requirements, and insurance underwriting criteria. By the time it reaches a farmer in India or a business owner in Lagos, it feels like market conditions. It feels like just the way things work.

The small British exporter who declines a Digital ID will find their bank applying enhanced due diligence. The freelancer who opts out will find European platforms defaulting to identity-verified users. The self-employed tradesperson will find the government contracts, the insurance products, and the business banking gradually excluding him. The architecture simply makes staying outside of it increasingly cold.

The State as Mechanism, Not Myth

In order to fully understand what Digital IDs are truly being rolled out for, one must first understand what the State truly is, not as civics class presents it, as a neutral arbiter of the common good, but as it operates in fact: as a coercive monopolist that derives its power from the exclusive, unchallengeable control of certain functions, and that survives by continuously expanding the domain of those functions. The State does not serve the people; it parasitizes them while persuading them that the parasitism is service. Just like all organisms whose survival depends on extraction, it has one inexorable drive, which is to expand its domain of legibility and control.

Legibility is the operative word. The historian James C. Scott, in Seeing Like a State, demonstrated that the central preoccupation of all modern states is making their subjects readable, which means reducing the complexity of actual human life to standardized categories, numbers, names, addresses, and identifiers that can be tabulated, surveilled, and administered. The State cannot tax what it cannot see. It cannot conscript what it cannot count and it cannot control what it cannot identify. The history of state power is, at its core, a history of the progressive legibility of human beings.

Digital ID is not a new idea dressed in modern technology. It is the culmination of centuries of that same drive, the fullest expression yet of the State’s desire to make every subject permanently, unambiguously, and inescapably known.

The CBDC as the Completion of the Project

There is an additional piece of this architecture that the government does not discuss when it talks about digital ID, because the discussion would make the agenda too visible. That piece is the Central Bank Digital Currency, the CBDC.

Central Bank Digital Currencies are state-issued digital money, held not in commercial bank accounts but directly with the central bank, and programmable. A CBDC without digital ID is a car without an ignition. The two are designed for each other. The CBDC requires a verified digital identity to function, to know who holds the wallet, who is transacting, who should be permitted to buy what. Digital ID, in turn, becomes the key that unlocks or locks your access to the monetary system. When your identity is digital and your money is digital and both are administered by the same state, the coercive potential is total and instantaneous.

Cash has always been the refuge from financial exclusion. When every other avenue of private economic life was closed, you could still hand someone a banknote and the transaction would exist between the two of you alone. The State has always understood this, which is why every decade brings new restrictions on cash transactions, new reporting requirements, new “suspicious activity” thresholds that creep steadily downward. The war on cash is a deliberate diabolical policy, pursued across jurisdictions, with the explicit goal of making all economic activity visible.

A CBDC completes this project. It eliminates cash not through prohibition but through obsolescence; by providing a “convenient,” “secure,” “government-backed” digital alternative. The ECB’s own design for the digital euro includes offline payment caps that force routine spending into fully traceable online modes. Academic critics and EU Parliament members have both noted that combined with AI analytics, real-time transaction data could enable social profiling at a scale no previous monetary system permitted.

No more seizing bank accounts the slow, legally contested way. No more requiring court orders to freeze assets. Just a flag on a database, a status change in a system, and suddenly a dissident journalist, an anti-government protester, a vaccine refuser, a political donor to the wrong party, cannot buy food or pay rent. The system is already built for this but the only thing missing is the centralised identity layer that links the human body to the wallet. Digital ID completes the circuit.

Trust-minimized systems, systems where the rules are enforced by mathematics and decentralized consensus rather than by human institutions, are categorically different from trust-based systems in their relationship to power. Every trust-based financial system has a chokepoint, which could be a person, institution, or authority whose cooperation is required for the system to function, and who can therefore be coerced, corrupted, or captured. The entire history of financial censorship from sanctions, asset freezes, account closures, to debanking; is a history of exploiting those chokepoints. A CBDC does not merely preserve those chokepoints. It concentrates them into a single, central, government-controlled node. It is the maximally trust-based financial system.

Bitcoin As A Counterforce

Against this architecture, Bitcoin stands not merely as an alternative currency but as an alternative proposition to the status quo. Sovereign human individuals can create and operate a trust-minimized monetary system that no authority can shut down or inflate and that no corporation can deplatform.

The economic value of a trust-minimized system derives from precisely this property: the removal of the chokepoint. A system with no chokepoint cannot be coerced by any third party. A monetary network with no gatekeeper cannot be weaponized against its users by any external authority.

Bitcoin does not ask the State for permission to exist. It does not ask you for identity documents before it will process your transaction. It does not care about your nationality, your credit score, your political views, or the compliance status of your wallet address. It is radically incompatible with the fiat monopoly because it is a monetary system that successfully circumvents the State’s foundational claim; that it alone may issue and control money.

This is why Bitcoin, at the peer-to-peer, self-custodied protocol level, is not reformable into the surveillance architecture being built around it. The on-ramps (exchanges, custodians, fiat gateways) are chokepoints that can be regulated, KYC’d, and monitored. The banking relationships of Bitcoin businesses can be severed. These are real and significant pressures, but the network itself remains. A person who holds their own keys, who transacts through non-custodial channels, who understands what they are doing and why, remains outside the panopticon by using a technology that the State cannot switch off.

The Existential Incompatibility

A system of total financial legibility (universal Digital ID, mandatory KYC on all fiat-crypto conversions, programmable CBDCs, AI-driven transaction monitoring) and a genuinely permissionless, uncensorable monetary network cannot coexist indefinitely as equals. They are not competing products. They are incompatible political propositions. One holds that the individual is sovereign over their economic life and may transact with whom they choose without requiring state permission. The other holds that all economic participation is conditional on state-granted identity and state-approved compliance status.

The State does not tolerate genuine competition in its core monopolies. It has not tolerated alternative currencies historically, from the criminalization of private gold ownership in Roosevelt’s America to the systematic debanking of crypto businesses in Operation Chokepoint 2.0. It will not tolerate an alternative monetary system that cannot be brought within its framework of control. The question is not whether pressure will be applied. It already is. The question is whether the pressure will succeed and on that question, the answer depends entirely on how many people understand what is at stake and act accordingly.

The path of least resistance for states is not outright prohibition, which generates resistance and is technically difficult. It is progressive capture: requiring Digital ID for all exchange onboarding, restricting self-hosted wallets through Travel Rule enforcement, making it increasingly difficult to exchange Bitcoin for goods and services in the formal economy, and simultaneously normalizing the CBDC as the convenient alternative. The Python doesn’t crush the prey immediately. It applies steady pressure and waits.

Conclusion: The Last Instrument

The construction of Digital ID systems, and CBDC infrastructure, is not a collection of unrelated regulatory initiatives. It is a coherent, cumulative project: the completion of the State’s centuries-long ambition to make every subject and every transaction permanently legible. Bitcoin represents the opposing proposition: that money is a tool of persons, not states; that the right to transact is prior to and independent of state permission; that a trust-minimized system governed by mathematics and voluntary consensus is not merely preferable to a trust-based system governed by institutional power but categorically different from it in the political freedom it enables.

The person who holds their own Bitcoin keys is beyond a specific axis of the State’s power. Their wealth cannot be inflated away by a central bank, their transactions cannot be censored by a compliance officer. They are, in that domain, genuinely sovereign, perhaps for the first time in the history of money.

There is no version of a universal Digital ID system that is compatible with a free society. There is no sufficiently robust data protection regime that makes centralised, biometrically linked, state-controlled identity safe. There is no trustworthy government of any party or of any era, to whom you should hand the master key to your existence.

What remains is the question that has always animated the conflict between individual sovereignty and institutional power: will the instrument of freedom remain in the hands of those who understand its value or will it be slowly encircled, captured, and made compliant until it is merely another node in the panopticon? The answer will be written in the choices of the people who understand what is being built, what is being lost, and what it means to refuse.
