I bought the same USB drive only about two and a half months ago. I simply didn’t need another one during that time, so I never checked the price again. So if I understand correctly, my client can still talk to your relay like a normal NIP 50 search relay, while the NIP 85 provider is what gives your relay the trust data needed to filter the results. If a parent’s mental condition creates a serious and immediate risk to a child, courts or child protection authorities can usually intervene in custody or contact arrangements. Cheap electricity definitely helps, but it only matters if you actually have the hardware to use it. Even if I had solar panels and effectively free electricity, I still couldn’t mine Bitcoin without an ASIC miner. So for me, access to mining hardware is just as important as access to cheap energy. And ASIC miners are not exactly cheap either, which makes the entry barrier even higher.

Building a business that can keep generating cash and continue buying BTC without constantly depending on new financing is something else entirely. If the underlying business is weak, the treasury strategy eventually becomes dependent on leverage, issuance or market conditions. A company that can fund Bitcoin accumulation from real operating cash flow seems much more sustainable over the long term.

Digital sovereignty is not only about what you own. It is also about whether you still have the means to reach it. I’d think about this a little differently. Before USB we had DVDs, before DVDs CDs, before CDs floppy disks. I still have an old MS-DOS computer at home that can boot from floppy. So my rule would be: don’t only preserve the data, preserve a way to read it. I’d use FAT32 for compatibility, encrypt the important files, keep a plain README with recovery instructions, and store only things that are hard to replace: family photos, documents, source code, research, keys/recovery info and essential tools. And yes, I’d also keep an old USB capable computer somewhere. If I managed to keep a floppy machine alive this long, I can probably keep a USB machine too. 😄

Sometimes it is useful information, sometimes a good joke, sometimes just a simple thought at the right moment.

The important part is not that it is digital, but that ownership and settlement do not depend on trusting an institution to honor a balance. The market odds are interesting too, although I would be careful about reading too much into one probability estimate. What matters more to me is that more people seem to be recognizing the difference between holding an asset yourself and simply holding a claim inside someone else’s system.

Our bank balances are not piles of cash waiting somewhere with our names on them. If everyone tried to withdraw at the same time, there simply would not be enough physical currency.

Money has already become mostly abstract.

I agree that physical assets matter too. What I find interesting is that even the fiat money we use every day is mostly just numbers on ledgers now. Bank balances vastly exceed the amount of physical notes and coins actually circulating. If everyone tried to withdraw their bank balances as cash at the same time, there simply would not be enough physical currency to do it. So in a strange way, even what we call “money” has already become largely abstract. That is one of the reasons I find hard assets, Bitcoin and the mechanics behind monetary systems so interesting.

Absolutely. I don’t see a 300 kH/s device as an economically rational Bitcoin miner either. For me it is more of a tiny lottery ticket and a learning device. I like experimenting with pools, difficulty, shares and watching how the mining process behaves in practice. Exactly. Even if the signer itself is something I built and trust, that does not mean I should automatically trust every Nostr client that asks it to sign. A whitelist can make daily use much smoother, but giving permanent approval to everything creates a different kind of risk. Clients can have bugs, break after an update, or behave in ways you did not expect. If broad permissions are still sitting there, the signer may end up doing exactly what it was allowed to do, even when that is no longer what you intended. So I think the right balance is probably: routine actions can be remembered, new or sensitive capabilities should stand out clearly, and permissions should be easy to review and revoke. Your point about identical prompts is important too. If a dangerous request looks exactly like a harmless routine one, people will eventually approve it on reflex. I think the signer should help the user notice when something is different, not just ask “Allow?” every single time.

SkySigner is still very much in development, and the approval model is actually one of the things I am rethinking right now. My original idea was to ask again for sensitive permissions, but at the moment it ends up asking for approval for almost everything. After using it myself for a while, even I started getting tired of clicking approve 😄 So I am leaning toward a middle ground: trust or whitelist a client for routine operations, but still ask again when it requests something more sensitive or a capability it has not used before. The funny part is that every time I think I have finished one piece, another compatibility issue appears. Some clients still use NIP-04 for messaging, while others use newer approaches such as NIP-17, so fixing one workflow often reveals another one that needs support. That has basically been the SkySigner development experience so far: one step forward, discover another NIP, back to the code 😄

The rejected shares taught me a lot too, because every rejection forced me to understand one more part of the process instead of just watching hashrate numbers. I came into mining pretty late, so I definitely missed the early Bitcoin CPU and GPU days. Around 2017 I was mining Dash and other X11 coins with GPUs, not Bitcoin. Even then, getting the right hardware was not always easy for me. What I am doing with CPU mining now is very different. I am not trying to compete with ASICs or run a laptop 24/7. Most of my mining sessions are experiments and rarely last more than an hour or two. I am building my own miner mainly to understand how the algorithms, Stratum, shares, difficulty and the whole mining process actually work under the hood. And yes, when I start testing with all the threads, the laptop definitely lets me know about the heat 😂 So I would say I am tuning for learning first, then speed. I just wish I had the opportunity and hardware to experience more of the earlier mining era like you did.

Taking a feature request that sat for years and turning it into a working, hardware verified implementation is exactly the kind of open source Bitcoin development I love seeing. Miniscript on SeedSigner, a Liana bridge, PSBT signing over QR, and the whole flow staying airgapped makes this especially interesting for inheritance and more advanced wallet policies. I am continuing to develop and test my own CPU mining software, CPU Miner Lab.

Right now I am testing the Power2b algorithm on MicroBitcoin after making some new updates.

The miner is submitting real shares to the pool, and this is not the first successful test.

With this setup, I have already found 6 solo blocks on the pool and received the mining rewards.

Today’s test:

6 CPU threads
572.6 H/s locally
30 accepted shares
0 rejected shares
Worker visible on the pool
6 solo blocks found in previous runs

The interface is in Turkish because I originally built the software for my own use.

Now I am making updates, testing again, watching the results and learning something new with every run.

Building the miner is one thing.

Watching your own code actually find blocks is something completely different. 😄

That uncertainty is frustrating, but it is also what makes mining interesting to me.

Building SkySigner has been a real learning process for me.

Sometimes I move forward, sometimes I realize something is wrong and go back. Then I understand the problem a little better and move forward again.

Every bug, every failed test and every small improvement teaches me something new about Nostr, signing and security.

It may look like one step forward and one step back, but I can clearly see that I am improving along the way.

A session based model with clear trust levels and a visible activity log feels much more practical to me than asking for approval on every action.

This is very close to the direction I am exploring with SkySigner. Sensitive actions should still stop and ask, but normal usage should feel smooth.

At first I thought I had broken something in my signer or profile metadata.

Then I checked the service itself and found that nostrcheck.me is currently returning a Cloudflare 522 host error.

So the problem was not my key, my client or SkySigner. It was simply the server behind the NIP 05 service.

The interesting technical takeaway here is that non-custodial architecture limited the blast radius exactly where it mattered: a compromised support system did not become a compromised Bitcoin custody system. The next layer is reducing the privacy blast radius too: strict retention limits, isolated support storage, least-privilege access, attachment encryption, egress monitoring and detailed audit trails. Security isn't only about preventing every breach. It's also about designing systems so that one breached component cannot compromise everything else.

This week I am continuing several small experiments around Bitcoin and related protocols.

I am still testing my own solo mining applications and comparing two very different experiences.

With my Bitcoin solo miner, I am working against extremely low odds and have not found a Bitcoin block.

On a much smaller network, MicroBitcoin, I have already found several solo blocks.

That contrast is helping me understand mining probability, network difficulty, and what solo mining actually feels like in practice.

I also started researching AuxPoW and merge mining after a discussion on Nostr led me toward Namecoin. I want to understand how the parent Bitcoin work, auxiliary chain commitment, and block submission process actually fit together before I try building anything around it.

While working on mining, I also ended up building a small application that watches network activity and alerts me with sound when a block is found. That started as a simple idea because I did not want to keep staring at logs all day, but of course one small idea quickly created several new problems to solve.

I would actually appreciate some feedback on that kind of tool. I am thinking about better explorer support, wallet monitoring, more networks, and more reliable block detection.

On the Nostr side, I am continuing experiments with signing tools, portable reputation ideas, and how Nostr and Lightning can work together without making security and privacy an afterthought.

I have noticed something about the way I work.

Whenever I start building one thing, I discover that I need to build something else first.

Then that second thing creates a third problem.

So I somehow end up with several experiments running at the same time. 😄

There are many things I would like to build, but I am working alone, so for now I am trying to finish smaller pieces, learn from them, and slowly connect them together.

Nothing huge yet.

Mostly building, breaking things, fixing them, and learning what is really happening underneath.

If anyone here has practical experience with AuxPoW, Namecoin merge mining, blockchain monitoring, explorer APIs, or reliable block detection, I would especially like to hear from you.

Funny timing. Last night I started digging into Namecoin because I am researching AuxPoW merge mining.

Then someone replied to my note:

“Namecoin halving in 2 days.”

So of course I had to check. 😄 Namecoin follows the same 210,000 block reward schedule inherited from Bitcoin, and the next halving happens at block 840,000. That means the block reward is about to fall from 6.25 NMC to 3.125 NMC. I originally came to Namecoin because I wanted to understand how Bitcoin parent work can simultaneously secure an auxiliary SHA256 chain through AuxPoW. Now I happen to be looking at it right before a halving too. The timing makes the experiment even more interesting. Not because I expect the reward to suddenly become valuable, but because it gives me another real protocol event to observe while learning how merge mining actually works. One comment leads to one question. One question leads to another rabbit hole. And suddenly I am watching the Namecoin block height too. 😄

Anyone here actively merge mining Namecoin already?

Before I call it a night, one more thought. I started the day thinking about solo mining. I ended it reading about AuxPoW, Namecoin, merge mining, Nostr, Lightning, portable reputation, and a few ideas that may eventually become new projects. That is probably what I enjoy most about this space. One small experiment leads to a question. That question leads to another protocol. Then suddenly you are reading source code at 4 AM. 😄

Namecoin is probably the one I am looking at most seriously right now.

It still seems to be one of the most established and active examples of Bitcoin AuxPoW merge mining, which makes it useful if the goal is to actually understand how the mechanism works rather than just chase rewards.

The practical downside is the market side.

I checked the current listings and NMC is still traded, but CoinGecko currently shows only CoinEx with NMC/BTC and NMC/USDT markets, and the daily volume is quite small.

So it is not completely unavailable, but liquidity looks limited.

Unobtanium is even more extreme at the moment because CoinGecko does not show any active trading pair for UNO.

That actually makes the experiment more interesting to me.

If I try this, the goal will probably be understanding AuxPoW itself first, then seeing whether I can build something around it.

The rewards would be secondary. 😄

I have been spending a lot of time lately building small Bitcoin related experiments instead of only reading about the technology. I built my own Bitcoin solo lottery miner, a CPU miner with native hashing engines, experimented with Power2b, and recently found 6 solo blocks on a smaller network while my Bitcoin miner keeps hashing with almost impossible odds. 😄 I am also experimenting with Nostr, Lightning, custom signing tools, and different ways these technologies can work together. A comment from someone here also got me curious about AuxPoW merge mining, so I have started researching that as well. The idea of using the same SHA256 work while also having a chance to find blocks on smaller compatible networks sounds like another interesting experiment. The part I enjoy most is not really the money. It is building something myself, watching it fail, fixing it, and finally understanding what is actually happening under the hood. Every experiment seems to create another question. And every question seems to become another project. That is probably why I am still here. 😄 What are you experimenting with right now?

Pretty productive day on my side.
I kept working on my mining experiments and one of my solo miners has now found its sixth MicroBitcoin block. Meanwhile, my Bitcoin Solo Lottery Miner is still happily hashing away with almost absurd odds of ever finding a Bitcoin block. 😄
That contrast actually became the subject of a new article I published today.
What I enjoy most is not really the coins. It is building these little experiments and finally understanding what things like shares, targets, Stratum jobs, block probability and mining variance actually mean when you see them happening in front of you.
I also got another application idea after finding those blocks, so that will probably become the next experiment.

Learning Lightning From Zero: The Road to My First Channel ⚡

Lately I've been spending more time reading about Lightning, node operation, channels and liquidity.

At some point I realized that reading about all of this can only take me so far. I want to actually learn how it works by running a node myself and eventually opening my first real Lightning channel.

I'm starting small.

I don't have years of Lightning experience, and I'm not trying to build a large routing node from day one. Right now I'm learning the basics: choosing a node implementation, understanding channel backups, finding good peers, learning the difference between inbound and outbound liquidity, and figuring out what actually happens after a channel is opened.

One thing I've already learned is that opening a channel is probably the easy part.

Keeping liquidity useful, choosing peers, understanding fees, dealing with rebalancing and knowing when a channel is no longer useful seem to be where the real learning begins.

Where the sats come from

There's another part of this journey that makes it a little more interesting for me.

I've been participating on Stacker News: reading discussions, sharing things I'm working on and joining conversations where I think I can contribute something useful.

Sometimes those contributions earn sats.

That gave me an idea.

Instead of funding my first Lightning channel immediately from my own wallet, I'll let those sats accumulate naturally and eventually use them to open the channel.

There is no deadline for this. I'm not trying to turn it into a race, and this is not a request for donations.

It's simply a way to connect two things I'm enjoying: participating in a Bitcoin community and learning Lightning by actually using it.

I'm thinking of roughly 100,000 sats as the point where I'll seriously start preparing to open the first channel. That isn't meant to be an ideal Lightning channel size. It's simply a practical starting point for learning.
