We had spoken to her in English and Thai the evening before and explained that in the morning we would be taking her to get her baby maker removed. No kittens! Yay for the yeeting! So, maybe she understood and maybe she was nervous and maybe she just wanted to get there early. Her energy was indeed yeetful. We got up together, slurped the coffee, rubbing sleep and anxious thoughts from our eyes, and then drove her to the local temple for the free clinic.<br/><br/>I guess I had expected, like a fool, what I had seen in America: checking in with a receptionist and then waiting in a waiting room for a few hours while they took her away to surgery, maybe enough time to flip through a magazine or catch up on messaging. In America, it&#39;s very clinical, very individual, very removed in it&#39;s removing. Readers, I am no longer in America.<br/><br/>We approached the temple parking lot to find it very full, a large pavillion area was filled with over a hundred people talking loudly and many, many terrified cats yeowling and dogs yipping with their owners. We were given after care instructions and a number to tie around her neck that matched a receipt ticket we held, she was the 40th animal to be fixed on this Monday morning. As we waited we watched as 6 doctors performed surgeries on a long row of tables, each animal first sedated and shaved and then laid out side by side. It looked and felt like war triage, tiny limp bodies being lifted and shifted into rows by technicians, the smell of vomit, piss and blood rising from the scene. One cat upon getting to the sedation table leapt from it&#39;s box and disappeared in a flash, a man behind me says, หมดแล้ว &#34;all gone,&#34; weak and stiff laughter ripples through the crowd. We are all there, watching, together. My eyes were fixed between Lucky and the hands of the surgeons. I was grateful when she was placed in front of the oldest looking surgeon, a man whose hands palpated tummies with care and wisdom, he moved his tools with skill and precision, these are motions he had done 10 thousand times. I watched from across the procession, pouring love into his hands and my sweet, Lucky cat. Three stitches and 45 minutes passed before she was placed back into our care.<br/><br/>I have the gift of calm in chaos and the ability to cry whenever I need to. So I&#39;m managing now that we&#39;ve got her home, a corner of the room protected for her recovery. She is returning to lucidity, slowly, confused, stumbling and falling over. This is the part I was ready for, the tender duty of looking after a loved one post-surgery. It was the process of the surgery that rattled me. We end our sentences with the gender marker we feel to, ka for female or krub for male, we are free to use either as we wish to. In conversation we would never assume the gender of another person, though we would make a guess about whether they were older or younger than us. In Thai culture an age based honorific is used, addressing our elders as P’ or Ba or Yai, etc or someone younger than us as Nong.<br/><br/>When I first encountered this, I didn’t want to disclose my age, my American self had some inner ageism at play. But the longer I’m here the more I love it, to be someone’s P’Lek 😻 is some serious Auntie love. Or to be tucked into the kindness of Nong Lek, I know that I’m being cared for.<br/><br/>And, to be able to end my sentences on my own terms, a “ka” when I’m feeling in my ladyness or a gentle “kub” when I’m just a little guy. There is something for me in just watching the elements of creation become. Water moves pigment. Ink behaves differently on canvas or paper. Paper can be sealed and added to plaster. It’s all a fuck around and find out type of adventure and I am so here for it. I would maybe refer to my style as loose, but I also love pushing into realism when time affords.
