"Why not suggest a mainline Linux distribution?"

The hard pill to swallow is, most mainline Linux distributions, are not 1 to 1 for a Windows-like experience. This comes down to two (2) reasons.

1) The development is focused primarily on exclusive free and open source software.

On principle, that is can be a great thing, except reality is not always based in principle. We live in a world where some proprietary software, drivers, firmware, and media codecs do make a difference.

2) The development is developed in a region where bundling proprietary software, firmware, drivers, and media codes would be an issue.

VLC Media Player, is a good example, of where a development is located, can make a difference too. Had VLC been developed in the United States of America, for example, it would have been shutdown, because in America you can not only own copyright and trademark on software, but also concepts. Thankfully, VLC was developed in France, and we all enjoy the benefits of that development, today.

These are two (2) things that can impact the development you choose, 1) what is the goal of that development and 2) where is that development developed.

Fedora Linux is a good example of these. On one hand, Fedora is aiming to be the free upstream to Cent OS Stream and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. For this reason, they have incorporate and make some partnerships to provide extra driver and firmware support. On the other hand, they are developed in the United States of America, so many of those non-free media codecs, that they cannot bundle, they require you to add yourself using the RPM Fusion Repository. Or if you were wise, you could use Ultramarine Linux, which is developed in Thailand, and is also Fedora Linux, but with all those non-free media codecs and repos already included.

quoting
note12yd…3yq7

If I search "how to fix ultramarine Linux" the 1st thing I find it their website, wiki, videos, and Reddit Subreddit (see screenshot). Both of which will also direct me to their live chat, plus clue me in that Ultramarine Linux is Fedora Linux, but with all those non-free media codecs, drivers, and firmware already included.

Fedora Linux is a wonderful Linux distribution to build on, but your grandma is going to want the Windows-like experience out of the box. She is not going to know or understand why her photos, music, and videos of her grandkids are not working right away, as they did on Windows. Having those already preconfigured, just like Windows, is important. - That is why I suggest, Ultramarine Linux, KDE Plasma edition, based on Fedora.

They have virtually no tech skills, and could not use the terminal if their life depended on it, but they're using Linux just fine.

So in summary, yes, there is better out there.

Particularly, the KDE Plasma edition, which will put all your settings in one place.

#Windows #Apple #Linux

      Israel lost the high ground.

They had the right to defend themselves, because what Hamas did was wrong. But this is no longer about defense or justice, because they're going out of their way to round up people, regular folks, and shooting them in camps, like fish in a barrow. They're shooting and bombing UN workers and relief aid workers. It's becoming a bloodbath and entered the realm of genocide.

They're not fighting terrorist, they're creating them, because more than a few are going to grow-up, messed up, filled with hate and spite. They're creating a breeding ground filled with people who will have mental illness and who will have a lot of frustration, having survived.

#Politics #Isreal #Gaza #Palestine
