It’s a little under two hours on a regional express that often makes the list of top 5 prettiest rail lines in Japan and you can tell almost immediately after leaving the metro area.<br/><br/>Lots of farming villages with rice plots straight out of a Ghibli movie lead into a mountainous area with a single-track train line that slowly snakes around the scenery to make sure you get to inhale every last bit of it.<br/><br/>You then transfer into a veeeery steep funicular rail to climb the mountains for good. The interior (no photos allowed) is gobsmackingly beautiful. Clearly a religious focal point.<br/><br/>Lastly, we went to see a bit of Okunuin, with 200,000+ grave sites, the largest cemetery complex in Japan.
