Reflecting upon the sad and tragic reality of the truth unfolding more than ever in our faces, I do sometimes wonder whether I should be crying, laughing, shocked, ...or simply enlightened.

While @joerogan deserves to be shared a little empathy with (because he got family&children - and he needs protect them & his show empire), he has been pretending to be "genuinely curious" within a specific spectrum of investigative, scientific, & technological topics to be discussed more urgently than ever, but as @SimonDixonTwitt's principle is correct here: Follow the money. The famous podcaster Joe Rogan (besides his own potentical blind spots, ignorance, fears etc.) definitely has has powerful but unknown handlers within the entertainment-intelligence-financial-military industrial-technical-complex - who don't even have to tell him specifically what to say or not, whom to invite o or not on his show.

If you have been carefully listening to the insulting ad hominem attacks between @SunWeatherMan & @AshtonForbes - who are both geniuses & idiots in their own peculiar w ays - I must admit being baffled that these two brains cannot overcome their fears, ignorance, arrogance, blind spots, & lack of knowledge & comprehension within their indispensable & precious knowledge of science & technologies.

These two highly intelligent individuals are the perfect and classical example - who either insult or ignore each other's valuable and valid scientific & technological comprehension - why humanity, human existence, civilization, & evolution has not had and would not have a serious chance to thrive.

What is strange is that both of them think that humanity is not ready or mature yet to receive or handle (existing but suppressed!) technologies beyond their comprehension or imagination (whatever you wish to call them: free energy, plasma, magnetic fields, teleportation etc.).

I have been trying very hard and we cannot afford to lose hope (because we have a child) to bring together or connect people like Ashton Forbes & Ben Davidson, in order talk about and implement the necessary technologies for the overdue and inevitable Earth Disaster Cycle, starting its first absolutely existencially catastrophic phases somewhere around 2030-2040 (Grand Solar Minima, geomagnetic excursions, Earth's exponentially weakening magnetic field, Pole Shift, cosmic radiation etc.).

What I truly don't understand is why at least a bunch of their followers do not demand an overdue panel-discussion together with Ben Davidson (whose documentary film will awaken many more people), Ashton Forbes, @EthicalSkeptic, @junhoBTC, @OMApproach , @solari_the (missing $ 21 Trillions or more), a few holistically thinking Bitcoiners like myself:) & many other complimentary brains.

While the parasitic "elite" have been building their (possibly useless) highly sophisticated & technological deep underground bunkers, humanity is being completely brainwashed, indoctrinated, divided, distracted, ...and systematically stolen from on every imaginable level.

➥ When Bitcoin was worth almost nothing. In 2010, Bitcoin was still very much a niche currency.

Satoshi Nakamoto's white paper was just over a year old, and BTC was worth barely $0.01.

The mining difficulty was ridiculously low, and the reward was still 50 BTC per block.

The first users were cypherpunks, libertarians, and nerds, who mined with... their processors.

A simple desktop PC was enough to mine blocks at the time.

It was against this backdrop that a new username appeared on Bitcointalk in July 2010: ArtForz.

No one knew it yet, but this name would become legendary.

➥ A broke engineer with a PayPal problem.

Before Bitcoin, ArtForz wasn't exactly what you'd call a financial tycoon.

He is an electrical engineer, comfortable with hardware, circuits, and graphics cards.
He loves computers, video games, and complex systems.

To make ends meet, he "farms" virtual currencies in video games, which he then sells for real money.

Until the day PayPal froze his account because of these activities.

The message was harsh for ArtForz: the traditional financial system can cut off access to your money... with a single click.

At the same time, a new concept was circulating on certain Internet forums: A currency that no company, no bank, no platform can censor: Bitcoin.

ArtForz immediately understood the power of the concept and, above all, he quickly realized that Bitcoin could be mined.

➥ From laptops to “ArtFarms.”

In 2010, it was still possible to mine on a laptop or a simple desktop computer.

The first enthusiasts discovered that GPUs (graphics cards) were much more efficient than CPUs at calculating the hashes required for Proof of Work.

Officially, Satoshi Nakamoto hoped for a "gentleman's agreement" to avoid rushing into a hardware race too quickly, so as not to kill the decentralization of the network.

But ArtForz decided to step up a gear in July 2010 and started mining with GPUs.

He quickly built what is considered one of the world's first GPU mining farms: the "ArtFarm."

In just one month, ArtForz already controlled about 10% of the Bitcoin network's computing power.

By the end of 2010, his farm had reached up to 25% of the network's total hashrate.

ArtForz stacked dozens of them in cardboard boxes to keep them somewhat ventilated, in a kind of homemade chaos halfway between a laboratory and a geek's attic.

One day, he posted on Bitcointalk that he had mined 1,700 BTC in six days.

➥ 409,650 Bitcoin: a treasure mined amid indifference.

With its ArtFarm, ArtForz is racking up the blocks.

Cross-referenced estimates suggest that ArtForz mined a total of around 409,650 BTC during this period, which is colossal!

ArtForz sold a large portion of the BTC when the price began to rise, but according to several accounts, it still retained around 50,000 BTC.

➥ The bug that could have killed Bitcoin.

ArtForz is not just an opportunistic miner, he is also a highly skilled programmer and security expert.

In July 2010, he discovered what would later be described as one of the most dangerous bugs in the history of Bitcoin: a flaw in the way transaction scripts are validated, linked to what would become known as the OP_RETURN bug.

The flaw could have allowed anyone to spend BTC from any wallet without owning the keys.

ArtForz could have taken advantage of this, but he chose to report the problem directly to Satoshi Nakamoto and the developers.

The problem was then fixed as a matter of urgency.

Authors such as Nathaniel Popper, in Digital Gold, emphasize this moment: the fact that ArtForz did not use this flaw to enrich himself is presented as proof that the system's incentives were already working.
His own coins would have been worthless if the protocol had lost all credibility.

On that day, an anonymous miner certainly saved Bitcoin.

➥ The race for hardware: FPGA, ASIC, and the fall of ArtFarm.

But ArtForz's dominance did not last forever.

As Bitcoin grew in popularity, new miners wanted to get in on the action.

Mining moved from CPUs to GPUs, then to FPGAs (reprogrammable circuits), and then to ASICs (specialized chips designed for mining cryptocurrencies).

ASICs quickly rendered desktop PCs obsolete, then made GPUs virtually useless for mining Bitcoin.

ArtForz tried to survive by designing its own custom mining chips, which allowed it to regain about 5% of the hashrate for a time.

But in August 2011, despite its efforts, ArtForz's share fell below 1% of the total hashrate.

It could no longer compete with giant farms and warehouses filled with metal racks and industrial fans.

➥ The Scrypt controversy.

Faced with this growing centralization, ArtForz refuses to give up.

If the hardware becomes too powerful, then perhaps we need to change... the algorithm itself.

It turns to Scrypt, a cryptographic function designed in 2009 by Colin Percival to secure file backups.

In 2011, ArtForz implemented Scrypt in a new cryptocurrency: Tenebrix, often cited as the first crypto to use Scrypt as a proof-of-work algorithm.

Litecoin, launched in October 2011, also adopted Scrypt for its Proof of Work.
In the Litecoin white paper, the developers wrote in black and white:
"We humbly offer our thanks to ArtForz for the implementation."

But the story doesn't end there, as controversy erupted over ArtForz's possible use of Scrypt to mine 150 times faster with GPUs.

Part of the community began to suspect ArtForz of keeping a hidden technical advantage to himself.

ArtForz denied wanting to deceive anyone.

Shortly after this controversy, he almost completely stopped posting on Bitcointalk.

➥ The disappearance.

After 2012, traces of ArtForz became scarce.

His username appeared on forums related to video game mods, notably for Minecraft and Kerbal Space Program.

But there were no more messages on Bitcointalk.

ArtForz remains silent.

Some believe he still holds 50,000 BTC in a cold wallet...
Others think he sold everything or lost it all...

No one really knows.

➥ Why does ArtForz still matter today?

The story of ArtForz raises several fundamental questions about:

➤ The centralization of the Bitcoin network and mining.
➤ The role of anonymous pioneers, whose contribution is not necessarily recognized by the general public.

But who was ArtForz really?

Little is known about him.

Wie du weißt, ist das Interesse an Bitcoin-Mentoring (hier unsere non-profit Informationsplattform: www.bitcoinmentor.at) leider sehr psychologisch geprägt.
Wenn der Fiatpreis nach oben schießt, dann ist selbstständlich das Interesse groß.
Diejenigen in der Gegend Graz & Umgebung wissen eh, dass ich gemeinsam mit Alois, Pepe, & Wolfgang eine Reihe von (kostenlosen) Vorträgen durchgeführt haben.

This is a long post that hopefully bridges some gaps between technical people (devs) and non-technical users and how they look at spam prevention in Bitcoin. I hope that it clarifies why I think that there is such a huge misunderstanding between both camps.

I'll preface this post with first disqualifying any malicious attempts to misrepresent the motives of either camp. Everybody wants to improve Bitcoin as money. Money is Bitcoin's use case. It's not a data storage system. If you think otherwise, there are countless shitcoins to play with.

Alright, let's get into it.

I have worked on anonymous systems for over a decade. I have read tons of research on spam detection, rate-limiting, and I've implemented spam prevention techniques in the real world.

I am very confident to say that there is not a single known method to prevent spam in decentralized anonymous open networks other than proof of work.

This is what Satoshi realized when he designed Bitcoin and it's why only transaction fees can reliably fight spam without sacrificing any of Bitcoin's properties.

Let me explain.

Spam prevention is a cat and mouse game. As a system's architect, your goal is to make the life of a spammer harder (increase the friction). This is why, on the web, you see captchas, sign-ups, or anything that can artificially slow you down. Slowing down is key. This is why Satoshi turned to proof of work.

Let's contrast this to other methods for spam prevention. This is not an exhaustive list but it illustrates the design space of this problem, other methods are often derivatives of these:

CAPTCHAS are a centralized form of proof of work for humans: Google's servers give you a hard-to-solve task (select all bicycles) that will slow you down so that you can't bombard a website with millions of requests. It requires centralization: you need to prove Google that you're human so that you can use another website. If you could host your own CAPTCHA service, why would anyone believe you're not cheating?

LOGINS with email and passwords are most popular way to slow down users. Before you can sign up, you need to get an email address, and to get an email address, you often need a phone number today. The purpose of this is, again, to slow you down (and to track you to be honest). It only works well when emails are hard to get, i.e. in a centralized web where Google controls how hard it is to get an email account. If you could easily use your own email server, why would anyone believe you're not a bot?

The next one is the most relevant to Bitcoin:

AD BLOCK FILTERS are another form of spam prevention but this time the roles are reversed: you as a user fight against the spam from websites and advertising companies trying to invade your brain. Ad blocking works only under certain conditions: First you need to be able to "spell out" what the spam looks like, i.e. what the filter should filter out. Second, you need to update your filters every time someone circumvents them. Have you ever installed a youtube ad blocker and then noticed that it stops working after a few weeks? That's because you're playing cat-and-mouse with youtube. You block, they circumvent, you update your filters, repeat.

The fact that you need to update your filters is critical and that's where it ties back to Bitcoin: Suppose you have a mempool filter for transactions with a locktime of 21 because some stupid NFT project uses that. You maybe slow them down for a few weeks, but then they notice it and change their locktime to 22. You're back at zero, the spam filter doesn't work anymore. What do you do?

You update your filter! But where do you get your new filter from? You need a governing body, or some centralized entity that keeps updating these filters and you need to download their new rules every single day. That's what ad blockers in your web browser do. They trust a centralized authority to know what's best for you, and blindly accept their new filters. Every single day.

I hope you see the issue here. Nobody should even consider this idea of constantly updating filter rules in Bitcoin. This would give the filter providers a concerning level of power and trust. It would turn Bitcoin into a centrally planned system, the opposite of what makes Bitcoin special.

This is why filters do not work for decentralized anonymous systems. They require a central authority. Until now, these rules were determined by Bitcoin Core, but they have realized that these rules do not work anymore. Transactions bypass the filters easily and at some point, carrying them around became a burden to the node runners themselves. Imagine you're using an outdated ad blocker but instead of filtering out ads, it now also filters out legitimate content you might be interested in. That's what mempool filters do, and that's why Bitcoin Core is slowly relaxing these filters. This has been discussed for over two years, it's not a sudden decision.

The goal of this change is not to help transactions to slip through more easily. The goal is to improve your node's prediction of what is going to be in the next block. Most people misrepresent this part. They say "it's to turn Bitcoin into a shitcoin" but that is just a false statement at best, or a manipulation tactic at worst.

Let's tie it back to proof of work and why fees are the actual filter that keeps Bitcoin secure and prevents spam reasonably well: Satoshi realized that there is no technique that could slow down block production and prevent denial of service attacks in a decentralized system other than proof of work. Fees prevent you from filling blocks with an infinite number of transactions. All the other options would introduce some form of trust or open the door for censorship – nothing works other than proof of work.

He was smart enough to design a system where the proof of work that goes into block production is "minted" into the monetary unit of the system itself: You spend energy, you get sats (mining). This slows down block production. How do you slow down transactions within those blocks? You spend the sats themselves, original earned form block production, as fees for the transactions within the block!

This idea is truly genius and it's the only reason why Bitcoin can exist. All other attempts of creating decentralized money have failed to solve this step. Think about it: without knowing who you are, whether you're one person pretending to be a thousand, or a thousand people pretending to be one. Bitcoin defends itself (and anyone who runs nodes in the Bitcoin system) from spam by making you pay for your activity.

People sometimes counter this by saying: the economic demand for decentralized data storage is higher than the monetary use case. First of all, I think that's just wrong. There are way cheaper ways to store data (there are shitcoins for this), and the value of having decentralized neutral internet money is beyond comparison.

However, there's a much deeper concern here. If you truly believe this, I ask you: what is Bitcoin worth to you? If you think Bitcoin can't succeed as money (i.e. be competitive), why do you even care? If you're not willing to pay fees for the use case that we all believe Bitcoin is designed for (money), and you believe that no one is willing to pay for it, how can it even persist into the future?

You can't have it all. If Bitcoin is money (which I believe it is), then we need to pay the price to keep it alive. There is no free lunch.

Either we centralize, or we pay the price of decentralization. I know where I stand.
