The only things that were really keeping me there were gaming and Lightroom. With Lightroom, I ended up abandoning all my edits and albums and switched to Darktable. I exported my edits from Lightroom as JPGs, so at least I still have a record of the direction I was going with them. The way I approach editing changes all the time anyway, depending on mood and experience. So I don’t miss the edits as much as I feared I would. There was a puddle reflecting the metal structure, but not the cyclist. For that, I would probably have had to put the camera into the mud. The image didn’t convince me at first. Then I tightened the frame, removed the puddle, and now it feels good enough to show. It’s almost a rule: keep removing things until only the essential remains. The color version comes straight from the RAW-to-JPEG conversion, untouched.<br/><br/><br/><br/>But of course, the software already makes many decisions on its own. Just like the camera does when it creates its own JPEG. Somewhere, someone - a programmer, an engineer - decides how raw data should become a visible image. If I do nothing, this is the result. Another program, or the camera itself, would have produced something else.<br/><br/><br/><br/>There simply is no true image, no perfect copy of reality. Only memory can hint at how it felt. So I prefer to take over myself. Right behind the hill the forest begins, so I positioned myself low enough to keep the treetops out, but not too low, or the tree itself would have been cut off. Since the hill slopes, I wandered through the field for minutes, searching for the right spot.<br/><br/><br/><br/>At first, the photo was in color: green field, blue sky, small white clouds, and the dark tree. Pleasant enough, and it reminded me a little of the XP desktop background. Ten days later I tried it in black and white, darkening top and bottom to draw the eye to the horizon with the tree. Something you can hardly pull off convincingly in color. On the right I opened the crop, which pushed the tree further left, away from the rule of thirds. That rule doesn’t matter much to me anyway, though I sometimes glance at it. Mostly, I just go by instinct. Because at the beginning of my photographic journey, it’s still the easiest way to get good results. Simply keep everything that isn’t essential to the subject out of the frame.<br/><br/><br/><br/>Spot a detail, a pattern, texture, color, or contrast - zoom in, take the shot, done.<br/><br/><br/><br/>The next step, I suppose, would be to place the subject in a context that invites the viewer to linger, perhaps even to reflect. And that, I find genuinely hard. My mental focus tends to cling to the object itself. At first, it was just strawberries, then blueberries joined in, and later raspberries too. All the fruit comes from a local farmer in my area. It’s a glorious time of year - sweet, juicy, and gone far too soon. I wish berry season could last forever. But the end is near... and then it’s back to the long, cold, berry-less months of waiting. At least I’ve got one more kilo in the fridge. Sometimes it’s circling back, revisiting, refining. Sometimes it’s about finding comfort in repetition, noticing how subtle changes - in light, mood, or me - can make the familiar feel different.<br/><br/><br/><br/>So here I am, again.
