Just had a sighted person tell me they often use clients and programs that were made for us, they don’t use screen readers, but they use clients like oh i don’t know a blind Mastodon client, or a text editor designed with screen readers in mind such as SonarPad, as an example, because they said, the interface is 1000 times cleaner, there’s a lot of keyboard shortcuts, and I never have to put up with animation nonsense. Same! I’ve been trying for months now to get everybody to get a blog. They’re angry because I don’t read their posts. I mentioned that I don’t go on there very much. They are utterly baffled. When I tell them that I read a lot of blogs now rather than Facebook that’s when I received the numerous comments, but blogging is dead! There is one account that I really love over there but she utterly refuses to get a blog and I don’t understand why. The page is Diary of a Mom. She writes these educational and wonderful post about advocating for her autistic daughter. Every single time I comment, you really should get a blog. You would get a larger audience. Absolutely no reply, no reply whatsoever. Not even an acknowledgment. And yet she’s constantly frustrated with the algorithm over there so shrug. The indieweb is fantastic but I want more! I dunno what CMS/website thing you use, but the easiest way to link to something internal is just remove all the prefixes, like instead of having the link be https://website.com/books, make the URL part just "/books" so that way if you change the URL in the future, everything will just go to that new place without you having to change every instance of website.com. I dunno if you can do this with Wordpress though, in the navigation bar, but if you have internal text as links and you wanna link something internal use that trick. I'm not the best person to ask because everything is done via a mailing list and a cloud drive folder. I make everyone tag themselves with something such as PR or ARC etc and then I send a folder link to everyone with multiple formats and just delete the folder on publication day, so not the best system, but NetGally just seemed to be overly complicated for wanting to get reviews. I was like, even if they don't review me, if they give my DRM free Epub or whatever to someone, fantastic! If it's via a publisher, even an indie publisher, I direct everyone to the publisher but I am gonna check out that link soon. I loved this! I don't think people know the difference between work and a job. People work all the time, from volunteering to doing mutual aid and other things to better their communities, but I’d even wouldn't call that work. As someone that's fully #AntiWork people are just mad because people would rather dedicate their time and skills to helping their communities and neighbors, rather than making someone else money. Any time! And really, it is more than possible for creatives to make money here. This is uncooth of me, but I am starting to believe people that immediately want this place to be like other microblogging platforms don't know how to see people as people, mainly just tools and things like that. I take extensive social media breaks. The Fediverse has helped me in so many ways. Someone donated to my website hosting costs that makes sure I'll be online long after my passing. It's possible, and I honestly, frankly, don't understand why it's so hard for other people to learn the culture. People know I'm not a bot so when I take my breaks, someone will let someone else know, etc. But I can't just get behind a feature designed to point at others instead of building community makes a platform better for other users, regardless of marginalization. Many have explained it to me and absolutely none have convinced me, not a single person, so maybe there's a reason for that not convincing everyone because I consider myself to be a very understanding person. It is my forever belief that all the people that hate email have zero clue on how to use email. For instance, for me? I stopped subscribing to newsletters and moved everything to RSS feeds.

I now use email strictly for communication. I move things into folders based on what kind of email it is. if I wanna keep something in the message, I copy it to a plain text file, with a note at the top when I got the email, who the sender was, and more. I copy full signatures when I want to save an email to a text file because then I'll never have to remember contact information again.

Lastly, I stopped reading email in HTML view. It's all plain text for me. No crap tables anymore, no nothing.

Maybe I don't quite hate it all, but I do hate talking with managers, marketing people, people not in web development about accessibility issues on websites because, usually, the conversations always go something like this.

Me. This complaint checks out. You need to do this and that and this to make it accessible.

Manager. But why isn't our accessible AI tool working?

Me. Because AI doesn’t understand your website and it won’t work anyway if someone is on a shit connection and the javascript won’t load.

Marketer. But then maybe the person needs to upgrade their internet.

Manager. Maybe the screen reader’s broken. Have they added AI to screen readers yet? That will fix everything. why doesn’t NVDA have AI yet? If NVDA had AI, we wouldn't need to worry about this.

Marketer. Did you try tabbing? I noticed you weren't tabbing at all, did you try that?

Me, internally. That's fucking it! You all deserve to be sued.

Today was the first day I thought about turning to the accessibility dark side and actually just becoming a plaintif in all these ADA lawsuits, because this level of, our website isn't the problem, when it clearly is, is getting on my last fucking nerves.

It's always managers and marketing people that are the first to ask, well, why doesn’t JAWS have AI yet? Why doesn’t NVDA just compensate for our shit web design?

Oh don't get me wrong, developers and I have had our share of, why do I need to use HTML? That's so 1980! Battles. You know, HTML can label a button, you don't need to use ARIA for that. Developer. But ARIA is richer! HTML is boomer technology!

But I'm getting more and more of these kinds of clients and so, like, I can fully understand why you'd join these law firms as a plaintiff and just going to town with demand letters and such, because this shit is maddening!

The best accessibility conversations I've had have been with developers. Not all the time, but more than not, they get it more than the dipshits in marketing and management.

My other alternative is I think everyone in marketing needs to take a mandatory web development class, and pass, and have a certificate.

The particular portal wants the user to upload a resume but then the portal is absolute trash at extracting from the résumé and synthesizing from the résumé so the portal wants the user to type in everything manually. the portal doesn’t even accept markdown or plain text resumes. Something like Fastmail, with the ability for aliases, and a clean, HTML, designed interface that isn't trying to be an app in a browser? But the ability to view messages as plain text.

I find it amazing how #RSS and quietly powerful internet spaces and such is dead to most mainstream people.

Longer post later, but for now, my initial thoughts. Is tech detox good and healthy? Absolutely! For the first time, though, I felt like this episode was missing something.

I just listened to the tech won't save us episode about basically detoxing yourself from smart devices/smart phones and it struck me as immensely strange that not once did she mention exploring quiet internet spaces, personal blogs, quiet forums, more intentional apps, such as an RSS reader, to get news, as an example, but digital literacy is at an all time low.

Like I said previously, we all were taught how to use the technology but not have a clue how the technology works so I kinda feel these anti-tech perspectives from folks to be the exact right idea, but there's an air of missing a few points?

Like I get it. Absolutely nobody should learn what XML code is, but like, I found myself thinking, if you read personal blogs, as an example, you'll never get the superficiality found in mainstream journalism. If you use tech to read alternative media, you'll never deal with social media news ever again.

This is the first time I found myself actually thinking like, actually? the best parts of the web are fantastic and nobody is seeing it, at all. Nobody is experiencing it. The current drama in the book world consuming all of my attention is this Britt Andrews Kickstarter. Her supporters gave her a total of, well, more than $95k for a Romantasy book and she buys a restaurant. Ahem! Just wow! I just don't understand why she didn't hire a ghostwriter with all that money if she didn't wanna write the book. I can't find any good blogs covering this, so here's a channel with videos about it. Like, for real! If you didn't wanna write the book, hire a freaking Ghostwriter instead of buying a restaurant!
