One thing that really annoys me about the way the media explains the rise of populist right around the world is the idea that they're somehow more authentic... That politicians and people in general have a "real self" hidden inside that may reveal to the public. Pauline Hanson and Trump might be more willing to say what they think and express controversial opinions than centrists, but that doesn't make them more "real". In the end like all humans are just organisms reacting to their environment. There's no beautiful soul hidden away inside, waiting to shine through.

I have a ChatGPT plus subscription and I usually use that, but I always get rate limited. After I hit the limit, I was reading all the hype about this new model. GPT-6-Astra is not available on the plus subscription yet, so I thought, OK, for once, I'll buy some tokens using the API. I bought $60 worth, and used them all up, just like that! So expensive! Usually, I would just use a crappy cheap model, if anything, while I'm rate-limited on ChatGPT.

Most cases in that graph were therefore among women who were never routinely vaccinated as adolescents. Why use the all-age rate rather than the vaccine-eligible women? We exploit the abrupt end of United Kingdom sugar rationing in September 1953 as a natural experiment, analyzing 64,761 UK Biobank participants born 1951–1956. Cohorts whose first 1,000 d of life fell under rationing exhibit dose-dependent reductions in adult cancer incidence: liver/intrahepatic bile duct (IHBD) (hazard ratio 0.31), rectum (HR 0.60), lung (HR 0.59), prostate (HR 0.48), and breast (HR 0.64). We uncover two pathways through which this early-life exposure propagates across the life course. First, a behavioral pathway: Rationed cohorts consume less sugar, eat smaller quantities, and maintain healthier, more diverse diets five decades later, consistent with persistent taste preferences shaped during a critical developmental window. Second, a biological pathway: Rationed cohorts exhibit longer leukocyte telomere length (+0.05 SD, approximately 2.2 fewer years of biological aging) and lower Granzyme B, indicating reduced chronic immune activation. These findings provide causal evidence linking early-life sugar intake to cancer and identify a behavioral pathway, consistent with persistent taste preferences, through which early nutritional environments may shape lifelong disease risk. The results carry direct implications for early-life nutrition and added-sugar policy.

Saw "The Best Summer" movie at #MIFF
It is a home movie of great bands on tour at the Summersault festival in Australia and Asia in 1995-1996. I was at the Sydney show in 1995 so it was great nostalgia. Wearing my Sonic Youth Washing Machine T-shirt which I bought at the show and have kept all these years!
