The rain, sun, microbes, bugs, mongoose, chickens, feral cats, dogs, heat and humidity, if in abundance and timed properly: takes 3 weeks. What's usually left is a greasy spot, some hair, some bones. Lots of people use bonechar and hair for soil inputs, so it can be useful. I get to see the life cycle pretty often out here on the homestead. It's not useless information. ☺️

Ten years ago, I planted a seed that grew a tree that produced 3 pods that produced seeds that I fermented, dried, roasted, peeled, added sugar and ground into chocolate paste. It's delicious. The original tree where I sourced the seed that grew my tree was covered by lava in 2018.

I'm unliking and re-liking and I'm un-boosting and re-boosting this post bc it's just that 🎯 I'd love to hear your thoughts on how to forge thru these types of obstacles. I really really REALLY want everyone to have a safe place to be, and bonus: one that provides sustenance. I have so much to share, yet I still can't "do it all" myself. I definitely think about the ablest nature of a subsistence farming homestead or any community that depends on manual labor to exist. Within a capitalist society, I don't know a good way to have inclusive communities that can fully nurture each individual persons needs, while not working the "able bodied/minded" members to death. Mutual aid communities exist(ed) but you have to deconstruct capitalism enough, and have high enough ratio of willing and "abled" people at any given time, to do the daily work of survival for the group. As much as I'd love to provide "refuge" for a bunch of people who might benefit greatly from the environment, I (on this one single homestead) need people who can physically and mentally handle this life. I'm not equipped AT ALL to take on 100%+ of the work load, even if I wish I could. I need help myself. 😅 I know I'm not always running at 100% and as my body starts to go, (it's done wonders for my mind) I don't see anyone stepping up to do this back breaking work. "Many hands make light work." But it also has to come from a place where there are enough "able" hands in the first place. When tech starts doing the manual labor that would create more egalitarian societies, instead of just making a few people rich, that's when we will see a fair and just society.

It may look like a family soup recipe, but it's a good gardening recipe for PEST CONTROL. It's pest control. Aim for the eyes, nose and mouth of everyday GARDEN PESTS.

*1 peeled onion (small)
*2 peeled garlic cloves
*1 teaspoon powdered cayenne pepper
*3 cups water
*Put in a blender until liquidy. Let it sit overnight, I strongly recommend outside. Strain in a cheese cloth, then add that liquid to a sprayer. Add 4 tables spoons liquid dish soap and a gallon of water to the sprayer then go to town. Make sure you are up wind of the spray.

It's funny the only variety of breadfruit they name is maafala, (when there are over 400 varieties) but the funniest part is how people kind of shit talk that variety bc they were oversold as the "best" variety of commercial crop to put in the ground, when ten different varieties would actually be better. People here were pushed to plant maafala, bc that's what was the most available to go in the ground, at the time. Lesson: The best variety(s) to plant, is/are the one(s) available. Maafala, as it turns out, are kind of smallish fruit, 1-2ish lbs each, and the trees are fairly compact. Good for homestead use. They are definitely prolific. BUT: commercial growers want big, fat fruit, less of them, easier to process. There are so many to choose from, all different. All worth propagating.

"In Hawaiian knowledge systems, storms and hurricanes are said to be manifestation of several different male and female gods depending on the severity, the location that it originates and the region the people are from. For example, severe storms coming from the south are said to be from Lono-i-ka-wai or the female sea akua, Moana-nui-ka-lehua. Storms from the east we said to be caused by Laʻamaʻomaʻo, a wind akua. Violent storms and hurricanes from the west were said to be from Lono-pele. Kū-waha-ilo was one of the gods also associated with hurricanes as well as blood offerings. It was said that when ʻUmi-a-Līloa sacrificed his corrupt older half-brother, Hākau, to his god, Kū-waha-ilo, a pillar of wind formed and the tongue of his god appeared to take in the blood. Some say that was a description of either a tornado or a hurricane. Some also claim this inspired the shape for the lei niho palaoa.

During severe storms and hurricanes, traditionally what was called the "Kapu of Kahekili" was put into place particularly by people from Maui, Oʻahu and Kauaʻi. Kane-kahekili was the Hawaiian male god of thunderstorms but it is said that he carried the puloʻuloʻu (kapu stick) of whatever storm, tornado, or hurricane deity that was approaching.

On Maui and Oʻahu, legends say that the eye of the storm was like a procession of male and female deities lead by Kane-kahekili.

On the island of Hawaiʻi, elders said that the eye of the storm came from a wind gourd. In any event, Hawaiians knew that storms tended to be circular.

In preparing for storms, Hawaiians traditionally buried important things such as family heirlooms. They then looked for a cave or moved to re-enforce a hale more in land and closed off any windows with thatching. When it looked as thought the storm or hurricane would be approaching, they invoked the Kapu of Kahekili. This kapu meant everyone gathered in a re-enforced hale (house) or cave, offered prayers and offerings, and then prostrated themselves in complete silence and meditated until the passing. Another thing I do when expecting A LOT of rain is every stitch of laundry I have, and wash every dish that is dirty. I want to come out the other side of this storm with a full, CLEAN catchment tank, clean, dry clothes, clean dishes, and no leftover bleach. I bleach the tank AFTER laundry, but BEFORE it refills from heavy rain.

In the blink of an eye, Yusuf Dikec, a previously unknown figure outside professional circles, a retired gendarmerie officer and professional shooter, became a global internet meme and sensation.

Everything is great! The moral of this story could be: no matter how old you are, keep doing what you love, and your best achievements may still lie ahead, even if you are an athlete over 50!

But another nuance caught my attention.

The fact is, Yusuf Dikec did not win the Olympic silver alone. It was a team event. Shooting alongside him was his colleague Sevval Ilayda Tarhan. In the same T-shirt, in the same pose, and also with minimal equipment.

The only difference is that he is 51, and she is 24. He began professional shooting around the time she was born.

Dikec is an excellent shooter with a plethora of medals from prestigious competitions, but he had never made it to the Olympic podium until his young partner grew up and competed with him on the same team.

If we look at the individual performances of these shooters in the same discipline where they took silver as a team, we will see that Tarhan finished 7th, while Dikec only came in 13th.

Now let's trace how mass consciousness works: we simply do not notice the woman standing next to him. It does not matter who she is, how she is dressed, how she shoots, or how unique her achievement is. We only see the man in the "wrinkled T-shirt," deliberately nonchalant, and create a romantic image of a "hitman." We spread a photograph in which he is shooting alone, and the result of this shooting is 13th place! Yet, we declare that he won "silver."

Why does the logic of mass culture work this way? After all, patriarchy has long ceased to exist, feminism is unnecessary, equality has been achieved, at least in Paris 2024 for sure!

This is how patriarchal myths about great male victories are born before our eyes. These images are entrenched in culture and shape our thinking. Meanwhile, women's contributions and achievements are simply erased from history. It was like this before. Unfortunately, it still happens today.

Here, we can build soil with locally available cinders, composted Mac nut shells, coconut coir, plentiful animal dung, and free mulch from the county facilities. I do buy potting soil for starting seedlings, it seems to really give them a good start. You could check with your local waste disposal facilities and see if they know of any locally made compost and soil products. A local quarry might also know.
