Maybe my favorite part of cooking beans is going through and removing bits of clay that inevitably find their way in. This is a mix of Anasazi and Pinto beans. (Can you find the clay bit?)

Harvesting, washing, bubbling away the aphids, bundling, bagging, packing, and, of course, talking. This morning's topics included non-profits (experience and critiques), top-down vs bottom-up, Mance-type buying cooperatives, student run food pantries at universities, cheerleading, people as emotional support animals, and A People's History of the US.

Another, muddier, day on a local farm planting tomatoes and peppers. Car conversation included evaluation of the day and initial discussion of bylaws elements. It looks like we may leapfrog and incorporate as a multi-stakeholder co-op before the cooperative is really formed, just to deal with liability issues. Then, our work will be backfilling.

@nprofile…scv2 His book WORKERS is stunning, also MIGRATIONS. I had the chance to see shows of his prints -- amazing work. Workers had an impact on me as a youngish radical -- the images of workers around the world in the late 20th century doing work that was largely invisible to people in the global north.

Starting to crank up the outreach for our April 26th #LaborNotes event in #Colorado Springs. Starting with my contacts and doing some "peer-esteem snowballing." We're doing a one-day "Secrets of a Successful Organizer" workshop. Cheesy title, but the content is solid and, above all, it provides a principled space and framework for participants to begin building grassroots, person-to-person, democratic networks.

In a recent conversation with @nprofile…6kmp I drew this crude diagram to explain how our #farm_club experiment was not about bringing all the factors of production under the control of the co-op business, but using cooperation among farmers, workers, and community members to build a commons. We are cooperativizing part of each farm's production process, including labor power, coordination, and c factor while commoning financial support and c factor. Commmons and Labor are the "organizing factors."

Any organization is a disorganization. I can't remember exactly when it dawned on me that capitalist social organization, in workplaces and in society as a whole, is a set of practices that are disorienting and disorganizing for workers and anyone seeking to cultivate democratic self-organization. Employers spend time, energy, and resources for this disorganizing purpose, which they see as "good management." Likewise, when we organize, we disorient and disorganize capitalist social relations.

So, based on my very limited experience, it seems that anything you want to do on #pixelfed you could do better on #mastodon. It's like pixelfed is a more limited version of mastodon (not trying to be provocative, just relating what I have experienced so far.)
Or, it seems the difference is more social then technical: pixelfed seems to attract people who are focused on culture and the visual arts. The instance I am on, milpamerica.org, is like that. It is small but already valuable to me.

Looks like we have a new member of #farm_club, a young guy who studies geography and environmental science. I showed him the ropes and we rolled up lots of row cover. No longer needed at this point. We harvested verdolagas to add to the CSA share; farmer Susan is humoring me. (Eddie, the new guy, suggested using the Spanish name instead of purslane, widely known as a "weed".) After work, we took a dip in the Arkansas river, which is still running strong. Bliss.

Concerns: in the chapter on "fundamental concepts" there is no real concept of consumption and the three categories of consumption presented -- alienated, constrained, and solidarity -- are described in terms of final consumption (not productive consumption) in a fairly conventional sense (individual effective demand). In a chapter on consumption, from @npub15mm…smw7's TeorIa Económica Comprensiva that I am translating, the treatment is much more complex and thorough.
