Switched over my old gaming PC from Win10 to #Linux. Hard decision what distribution to choose (#nixos is my main distro but I want to try out things).

I wanted #kde to try out KDE connect, and chose Fedora 42. Both nice to install and use so far! Nvidia proprietary drivers were a bit annoying (why do they compile in the _background_, _after_ dnf tells me it's done?!) but other than that I'm fine.

It's, in a way, gruesome, fiddling with raw bytes, guessing some details, getting new files with features still unsupported, and I have no clue how exciting it will be to implement all the common filters. But the language is delightful and I'm making constant glacial progress. That accounts for a lot I suppose...

If I understand it correctly, Org does already have internal links. However, to create one involves navigating to the heading, saving the link, navigating back and inserting it. It would be nice to have this a little easier. But I'll try how far I come with this alone. I think.

Trying to see if replacing the "dunst" notification daemon with #emacs' "ednc" is viable. Currently: a little too cumbersome. I have my notification(s) on the modeline, but the principal mechanism to communicate with ednc is a buffer that you have to navigate in.

I'm using #shellcheck's excellent #haskell GitHub workflow to produce statically linked Haskell binaries. It's curious, however, that ghc-9.0.4 produces a binary that's roughly 1MiB in size, whereas 9.4 produces a whopping 30MiB binary. Haven't tested the later ghc versions yet, but I hope they're a bit more conservative w.r.t. size...

So I built this little web site based on pure HTML; no Javascript in there, just some CSS. Thinking nothing of it, really.

And then, shortly after, got into a situation where I was in an ssh session and needed to use the web interface to do configuration work. I could just grab the "w3m" terminal-based browser and go ahead with that. No SSH tunnel and full-fledged web browser needed. Nice!

PS: Is there a hashtag for this "dumb web" approach?

Is there anything in #nixpkgs #homemanager similar to "volumeicon" to display, well, a volume icon in the tray? Otherwise I might have to just create a PR to add it, it's pretty handy.

Is there a "user-oriented" version of #systemd that one can use on servers? We have this hardware controls framework that has a tool to graphically see all the device servers running and restart them with a right click → restart. That'd be cool, but for systemd services. #linux
