Since yesterday was international trans day of visibility, let's talk about visibility :zerotwo_learn:

Being visibly trans (and more broadly, queer) is dangerous. I don't mean "you'll get nasty messages", I mean you risk getting doxxed, or mobbed and cut off from communities which are our very lifeline (in every sense of the word), or having random fuckos fantasizing about bashing your head in with a baseball bat, shooting you up with an ak-47, or sending credible threats of violence (all examples I've personally seen from "pillars" of certain communities of marginalised people here in fedi :cat_facepalm: )

Part of this is the insideous, incessant idea that having a 2D profile pic (pfp) means you're a bigot or even a Nazi.

Being able to use a real face as a pfp (and, relatedly, real names) on an account is a privilege. There is the potential harm from others mentioned earlier, but there is also the fact that we trans people often are unable to even look in a mirror without severe distress, and having our faces on a pfp can be even worse :not_like_this:

Judging people who have a 2D avatar (almost always called an "anime" avatar by these types even though most 2D pfps aren't from anime) as a bigot without ever knowing them is a direct form of anti-trans discrimination (and anti-queer discrimination). This vomes up fairly often on fedi, and if you'd like to do an allyship, you can not only dismantle this idea in your ownind, but also speak up for us when ignorant people trot this idea out for the umpteenth time that year :hug_love:

Oh, I forgot to mention this tangent: trans-fems get the most visibility out of trans people generally, which doesn't mean we get more power; it means we have the brightest targets on our back, that we have one less layer of defense (see the defense onion), that we get the most scrutiny. Visibility isn't a boon, it's a curse for us. Trans-fems you see that are highly visible on purpose are doing so despite the risks and detriments that come eith it in the hope that it might help those who have yet to hatch, but demanding use of that visibility from us is demanding we take more risks :frog_sus:

Hey Fedi, I know there are a good lot of you want actionable ways to fight fascism. You know how one of the strategies that fascists use is to overwhelm people and make them freeze up, unable to fight back? :shiba_confused:

I know many of you might not be used to this because it doesn't really exist on major social media platforms, but we have a thing here called a content warning (CW) that collapsed a post with little custom tags on it. Think of it as consent. Instead of forcibly pouring Scottish breakfast tea down a stranger's throat, you can ask them if they want it and warm them it's a smidge hot to chug :frog_blush:

This is especially appreciated by those of us that are marginalised because we have to deal with trauma, horrid news, and the like on a nearly daily basis as it is, and CWs allow us to decide whether we have enough energy and emotional capacity at that moment to deal with more of it which can literally save some of our days. (To use myself as an example, I'm mostly bedridden and spare emotional energy can decide whether I'm able to physically take care of myself that day or not.)

It's a small thing, and it may feel awkward or uncomfortable at first, but I promise once you get used to them, other social media sites will feel like needless barrages on your sanity and you'll feel oddly naked trying to make posts then realising they don't have that feature :leafeon_giggle:

I've been on the decline physically due to long covid for a couple years now, but I've recently gotten to a point where I need to fundamentally rethink how I get my nutrients due to being mostly bedridden. I'm hoping people here might be able to help me build a list of foods and meals I can acquire, prep, and eat in my current condition :frog_blush:

・ideally 1 pan or pot to cook, 1 bowl to eat from

・minimal ability to stand (1~3m at a time, maybe 10~15 minutes a day, half of which I can't spend on food)

For those who aren't familiar with the lore, this book essentially details the events at the end of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall from the perspective of various Blades agents who were in the area and experienced it. While magic exists in the world of The Elder Scrolls, events like The Warp In The West take incomprehensible amounts of it and are a truly rare sort of phenomenon :frog_blush:

These accounts of the event were only accessible to very few, and only because of the existence of The Blades, a security and information organisation that answers to the emperor. Meanwhile, most people were either not privy to the details of the event or simply call it an act of the divines.

I want to cover two things: why it matters, and what non-trans people can do to help :bugcat_nod:

:zerotwo_learn: Queer folks are, for the most part, not raised within the community. We're most often born in non-queer families and often go through a large chunk of our lives not even knowing queer folks exist, that anything outside of the cis-het structure even exists.

Racial representation gives us role-models, shows us that it's ok to be, in my case, mixed-race, that our struggles are seen. Queer representation, on the other hand, shows us that queer folks exist, that that is something even *possible* to be. I went 3 decades without realising that the feelings I was feeling were gender dysphoria, without realising there was something I could do about it, without realising that doing those things about it would finally make me feel like I was me, not just a husk of a meat-mech I was piloting around waiting for some unknown thing to happen :frog_blush:

However, trans visibility can be deadly to trans folks :cat_frown: Being visible in our current society isn't just a physical danger to us, it can often be a danger to our social lives and financial stability. Trans people are homeless at a staggering rate, both due to families often shunning them as well as jobs firing and not hiring them.

In fact, even here on fedi, where some of the space is decently protective of trans people (though major servers tend not to be), every few months, there is a wave of posts talking about how "2D 'anime' (read: anything including picrews) profile pics (pfps) mean bigots and nazis", which, if you've read the last 3 paragraphs, you can see why a first-name-last-name-real-face account might be existentially dangerous to trans folks.

Being able to be out, to even show our faces, on trans day of visibility is a risk to every person who does it. It's a risk taken with the hope that it will help make the world survivable for all other trans folks, both currently existing and every one who will exist in the future :hug_love:

Now, what can you do about it if you're non-trans? Stop falling for transphobic talking points. Stop letting a person use another marginalisation as justification for being transphobic. Stop supporting organisations that support (or Lyssa fuckin' forbid, are *run by*) people who espouse transphobic rhetoric.

But more than that, if you have some money to spare, help trans people not starve. I'm not saying "send one $500 a month" (I will not object if you do, as a note), I'm saying maybe find a few trans people that need it and contribute $10 or $20, something within your means. Super bonus points for setting aside a little every month.

I know ko-fi and patreon allow for it in an automated way to make it easier, too, though on ko-fi, you usually have to click from single-time to monthly :blob_nod:

Over the last 1.5 years, I've also dealt with long covid, which makes my stamina 20% of what it used to be, alongside making everything cost more and recover slower, which has been a frustrating journey, and I've become nearly unable to do in-person performances because even the travel is exhausting :not_like_this: I'm also AuDHD, and always have the specter of repetitive stress injuries looking over my shoulders :blob_sweat:

On Fedi, I tend to talk about games, manga, trans-fem stuff, and streaming, as well as heavier topics like transphobia, transmisogyny, and racism :zerotwo_learn: (my boosts tend to be slightly wider in topics, including appropriately CW'd lewd material and artists (and if you want just my posts, you can set the option to not see my boosts~))
