Last week we were pot banging, as we do most weeks. This week we listened in silence as names of Palestinians killed by the Israelis were read out.<br/>Each name is read out with the age of the deceased. In one hour we had time only for a small fraction of the dead. There&#39;s time to remember only a few hundred out of the tens of thousands who have been killed.<br/>Clearly many people were touched by the message, especially when they heard the names of young children. We had incredible problems in cycle campaigning in the 90s in the UK because of the fixed idea that cyclists were best off on the roads. The CTC was so worried about being &#34;banned&#34; from the roads, that they sat on their hands through decades of decline in cycling as people at large decided it was just too dangerous to cycle.<br/><br/>In the 1950s British people travelled on average more km per year by bike than they covered by car. Even in the early 1960s the UK still actually had a higher cycle share as a proportion of distance travelled than NL has now. But it was all thrown away by building for a future of mass motoring and nothing else.<br/><br/>What&#39;s especially galling is that many people don&#39;t even realise that cars as the issue. These days many think it&#39;s &#34;the hills&#34; or &#34;the weather&#34; or whatever which puts them off, but there are still people alive who used to just get on with it and cycle: On a three-speed. He wrote a book called &#34;Cyclecraft&#34; which was used as a text book about how to cycle by the majority of cycling training organisations in the UK. Many campaigners also followed his writing as if were the word of God.<br/><br/>These two people made it incredibly difficult to campaign for anything approaching humane conditions on the UK&#39;s streets because &#34;all&#34; the English speaking &#34;experts&#34; were of one mind. We were getting nowhere at all because everything had to be filtered past people who thought that teaching vehicular cycling to children was actually the way forward.<br/><br/>That&#39;s pretty much why I made the decision 25 years ago that we had to emigrate to the Netherlands, and why my family has now lived here for nearly 20 years. Nothing on it is unmaintainable.<br/><br/>This bike came out of the factory in 1982 (May 1982 according to the stamp on the rear hub). It has admittedly had a fairly good life, always having been kept indoors, but it&#39;s been ridden a lot yet needed almost no work.<br/><br/>The front rack had a broken non-essential part which I removed. The rubber strap / snelbinder over the rear carrier rack was broken so I replaced it, and the skirtguards were perished and falling apart so I replaced those as well. Otherwise, I&#39;ve just checked that things were working and added a bit of oil. One of the pedals was running roughly until I oiled it.<br/><br/>Bike shops don&#39;t sell bicycles like this any more.
