      The Math Teaching Shift That Changes Everything&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;I used to dread teaching math.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;I&amp;#39;d stand in front of my class thinking &amp;#34;I hope they don&amp;#39;t ask me why this works.&amp;#34;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Sound familiar?&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;I was teaching procedures I barely understood, hoping students would just memorize the steps.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Then I discovered conceptual teaching—and it transformed everything.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Here&amp;#39;s what changed:&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;🔸 Instead of &amp;#34;Let me show you how,&amp;#34; I started asking &amp;#34;What do you notice?&amp;#34;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Student ideas became the starting point, not the destination.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;🔸 Instead of correcting every mistake, I&amp;#39;d say &amp;#34;That&amp;#39;s interesting—tell me more.&amp;#34;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Student misconceptions became GOLD. They revealed how students were actually thinking.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;🔸 Instead of &amp;#34;That&amp;#39;s wrong,&amp;#34; I&amp;#39;d say &amp;#34;I see what you&amp;#39;re thinking.&amp;#34;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Honoring student ideas isn&amp;#39;t being &amp;#34;nice&amp;#34;—it&amp;#39;s being EFFECTIVE.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;🔸 I stopped teaching algorithm-first.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Old way: Teach procedure → hope for understanding&lt;br/&gt;New way: Build conceptual understanding with models → connect to procedure&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The order matters: Conceptual FIRST. Models SECOND. Procedure LAST.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;🔸 I started using structural language—naming the mathematical structure students were seeing:&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&amp;#34;How did you decompose that?&amp;#34;&lt;br/&gt;&amp;#34;What happens when you partition this?&amp;#34;&lt;br/&gt;&amp;#34;I see units of...&amp;#34;&lt;br/&gt;&amp;#34;Let&amp;#39;s iterate that pattern&amp;#34;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;When students explain their thinking with precise language, understanding sticks.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;🔸 I embraced &amp;#34;Tell me about your model&amp;#34;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Why? Sure is nice to have a platform where you own your content, cannot be censored, and it even has a bitcoin economy for exchanging value.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Excited to post great math education content here.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;I find that young students with a strong foundation in K-5 math perform extremely well in later grades, however students with struggles in any fundamental area, really struggle in later grades.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;We fix this with the DMT Framework, focus on structural language, effectively use models, and prioritize conceptual learning while connecting math lessons to real life students know.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Math Success, Life Success.
