People pontificating about whether codebases containing LLM-generated code are subject to IP protection all seem to be forgetting the key point that the law always sides with capital

When big media decided that pirating an mp3 file should be a criminal (not civil) offence, the law sided with them

When big tech decided that pirating every piece of media on the internet for AI training was fair use, the law sided with them

I am begging my fellow brits to understand that every initiative to "tackle the immigration problem" or "crack down on benefits fraud" is designed to do exactly two things:

1) make your life worse, for the benefit of those already better off than you

2) ensure that you place the blame on people who are powerless, instead of questioning why the people with the power to improve things keep making them worse (while you inexplicably cheer them on and demand that they do it even more)

So quote boosts have arrived on Mastodon (after already existing in client implementations for several years) and so far 100% of the posts I've checked have had them disabled

I guess the anti-QB messaging of the community that lead to the feature being delayed so long in the first place means that now it's here everyone just disables it by default for all their posts and then forgets it exists

So what was the point of this exercise?

Have you noticed that the ratchet on the quality bar only ever goes down? Whether it's software, politics, customer service, ethics, etc

Once we accept something worse, even once, that becomes the new baseline. It's like the Overton window, but for everything, not just politics

Individual people, products or movements may aspire to be better than the baseline, but the public mostly dismisses such claims as naive or virtue signalling
