I spent 15 years of my life with a GNU maintainer of multiple projects as a partner. I can accurately say that his devotion to the cause and according asinine behaviour was part of the downfall of our marriage. And I can say, as someone who is a decent and very experienced software engineer in her own right, that GNUbros jumping into conversations and adding the corrective equivalent of 'But it's GNU Linux' or 'you must mean the platform, not the kernel', or whatever, is one of the many reasons I don't contribute to GNU software, and have written off my prior (thankfully small) contributions.

You aren't converting anybody. You are being dicks.

Not all GNU fans and all, but seriously: NO ONE ASKED YOU.

Nobody who really codes is surprised that AI coding assistants don't help.

If you are a relatively experienced developer and have the experience of having had a colleague who isn't entirely qualified, but wants to LOOK experienced and competent, working on the same code base with you, you'll understand why.

They usually:

- Cut and paste code to make it look similar to other code
- Grab inappropriate or very suboptimal answers from Stack Overflow
- Work very hard to make their code APPEAR good while not understanding why it is not.

And most of the time, if you are resource-strapped, you will end up having to spend more time, at some point, digging through and rewriting their code, or having ENDLESS frustrating code review cycles, than to write it yourself.

Because you have experience solving novel problems. And your colleague doesn't.

What will AI do? Well, since it is just predictive text trained on stuff that "looks" relevant, it will:

- Statistically predict what the code should look like based on what other code looks like
- Reproduce inappropriate or suboptimal solutions from Stack Overflow
- Work very hard to make the code LOOK like it predicts good code should look while not understanding why it is not.

CONGRATULATIONS - you have now automated toxic performative incompetence!!!!!

I promise you, in resource-strapped situations with real problems, just the USE of AI, never mind the COSTS of building AI nonsense extraction/generation machines, will cost FAR more than not using it at all.

That suboptimal colleague means a full-time good developer has just become a 25%-time good developer and a 75%-time surgeon/firefighter/headcase. This is where burnout is born, friends.
