It is the case in computers nothing is actually "destroyed" per say. You are simply changing bits from 0 to 1 and back to 0. It's from the perspective of the runtime / host language that information is "destroyed" as it moves in and out of it's domain / point-of-reference.

A funny consequence of this is games. This video from Bob Nystrom sticks with me for his observation that "you have to re-implement OOP in a OOP language for your game's world". You game's world is separate from your language's world.

NULL was picked for it's tendency to confuse computer system. I keep coming back to this. I know what "poorly made things" you are thinking of. But there is the cold cynical view of that. "poorly made" as in "you don't have years of drawing experience, this looks awful, why did you bother?". It's a bitter note I've long seen online.

When I was a kid, I drew without shame. Every drawing was made with heart and passion. But when I started to look back as an adult, all I can see is the poorly made things. Sloppy art, sloppy anatomy, sloppy this sloppy that.

But, I've been trying to take a kinder approach. Appreciate that coarseness. To enjoy impassioned sloppiness that is found in raw self expression. Something doesn't have to carefully crafted and stitch together to be good or enjoyed. It just has to be made from the heart.

I am possibly one of the only artist I know that enjoys looking at their old art. Everyone else cringes in shame, embarrassment, guilt? perhaps. Guilt at having made something so carelessly.

But, I've come to look back almost with envy. The lack of understanding, the pureness of my attempts at expressing myself. I look at it and go "man, I don't even think I could draw like this if I tried.". I kept an old composition notebook full of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends x Super Mario fanfiction.

It was all written in 2007. It's insane nonsense. Errors I'm not even sure I could earnestly recreate. I spelled virtualized as "verchooliesed". I don't think I could even imagine spelling virtualized so badly now. If I saw that in a book trying to "write like a kid" I might scoff at it for being to absurd.

But, there it is, written by me nearly 20 years ago.

I like to occasionally look through this notebook. Remember what it was like to just *firehose* creative energy without a care for Good or Bad. Just wanting to birth an idea into the world, tell a funny story, share my feelings.

From the time that story was written to about the start of college. I was paralyzed with fear. A fear of expressing myself in words. I internalized the endless judgement of others. In another timeline, one where I didn't have an English lecture to pull me out of my shell, I may have perhaps found GPT models to be liberatory.

I luckily found freedom in messy 4-5 people ERP in discord backrooms. Rooms that I'd eventually find my BF in. I now shameless put up pages that may contain spelling and grammar errors with no intent to fix them unless they cause major errors. My wikithing is wreckless self-expression.

My best will be learning to create with careless, reckless passion. Accept someone will always find what I make to be poorly made no matter how hard I try. To accept that sometimes "making something poorly" is possibly the goal. That all things start "poorly made" before they have a chance to be made well.

I want to be able to write "verchooliesed" with heartful passion and not a care nor guilt for how poorly spelled that word is. Illustrate a story without worrying how poorly drawn each thing is. Narrate without fear of how ill-structured the narrative is.

I wish people would embrace poorly *made* things instead of turning to destructively generated slop. The world would be a much kinder place for it. It's not a fear of effort, but a fear of sincerity. A dark numbness to expressing yourself, both the well-put-together and the horrible-crashout-5am-screams.

And the "active" object is still accessible under @enemy/ptr (and in Lua it's current_enemy). I think having a page on this style of uxn would be cool to read. Especially with how you apply it to different situations. In theory, Factor (or any compiled language really) *could* preform the same optimization I describe here *if* the compiler can detect that buf is a global singleton *and* that buf[i] is finite. Thus, buf[1].append(str) would be the same as buff-append-1(str) but optimized to erase indirection. This is actually a trick I've used in Modal and Nova from time to time when trying to load-balance rule search and rewrite cost.

This could then desugar into append(at(buf, i), str) and still generate the same code. In catlangs, however, the difference is moot. Methods in Factor exist more as short hand for manually writing out if chains or cond blocks, which the compiler can optimize on and erase)

to access the i-th buffer and append str to it. The buffer access and bounds checking have been internalized. If the list of buffers is a fixed size, you can then "unroll" each entry into:<code>append-1(str) append-2(str) append-3(str) . . . </code>

So this is kinda two tricks mashed together (OOP with monomorphization and inlining).

Tho, the example given is operating on a globally shared buffer that can have its access inlined to speed things up (vs having to shuffle ;buf and ;cap into the correct place with SWP2). If you had a list of buffers, however, there would be no difference between append(buf[i], str) and buf[i].append(str). As noted, Raku (and also Nim) have Uniform Call Syntax because method invocation is the same as "pass a pointer" outside of static singletons such as this buffer example.

(And many OOP languages that compile to machine code will monomorphize into "pass a pointer to static code" where possible cause it's more efficient than dynamically dispatching on the type of the pointer)

At some point while thinking up all sort of wacky solutions, I kinda went "actually you can just count up all the solutions pretty quickly". You don't need to care about the permutations of FGHI since there is a limited number of valid FGHI that AB * CDE can produce.

Basically "why am I doing all this CS mumbo jumbo? It's a pretty simple question actually". The only fancy footwork I did in that solution was making it so I didn't have to allocate memory beyond a bit of space for checking solutions (i.e no strings, recycling the same table).
