After a long winter in hibernation, spring has finally arrived! 🐦 🎵 The birds are singing again, and here’s what I’ve been up to over the past few months:
Built a new garden bed, planted two apple trees. protected the soil from frost and snow using cardboard and autumn cuttings.

Now, I’m busy planning for the next season, organising seedlings and designing bed layouts. I also have a project to restore our first garden bed, which has seen some wear after two years.

We’ve been busy with various things over the past week, but here’s a quick update from our veggie garden. Things are going more or less well.

The tomatoes developed some disease due to the heavy rain last month, but they are now recovering well with the dry and very hot weather we’ve had over the past few weeks.

It’s a bit sad to see everything drying out—signs of late summer. I need to mentally prepare myself for the next change of season. I never like the return to shorter days…

Even though it is quite common to see a cabbage white butterfly, it still brings wonder to the garden. I particularly enjoy watching the movement of its wings. I let this broccoli flower in the hope of getting some seeds later this year. Meanwhile, the bees and butterflies are enjoying it.

We harvested some more ears of corn. This time, it's colorful popcorn and our second and, sadly, last sweet corn. We still have more ears of popcorn coming, though. All the ones harvested so far are partially husked. We will need to plant more next time so they can be properly pollinated. This year wasn't great again, but we will get it right at some point 😊

I always enjoy checking what the garden has to offer each day. Yesterday, it was cucumbers, cauliflower, tomatoes, kohlrabi, and even grapes! 😀
Currently, we are getting a lot of rain, which is quite a contrast to last month when we didn't get a single drop all month long.

Our first sweetcorn has been harvested! I know I should probably have left it hanging there a bit longer, it is not fully pollinated and probably not fully developed either, but I was too excited and impatient. Thanks to Richard Rollinson (npub1fqf…ajkk) and Eat This Podcast (npub17u9…rkxp) for sharing their knowledge along the way!

I was hoping that the sweetcorn would still need some time to continue developing. I will check on the other ears later and will probably start the harvest. The issue is that only two sweetcorn plants survived, so I presume there are not enough for proper pollination. Next to them, there are 20 popcorn plants, but they started pollinating later. I am learning a bit more each time, it's only the second year, so I need some more experience. Thank you both!

Things continue to grow in the vegetable garden. There are more and more cucumbers to harvest. The pumpkins (at least, I think they are pumpkin plants, they grew unexpectedly from seeds in the compost) are slowly getting comfortable enough to fruit. The navy beans are starting to bloom, and the sweetcorn looks pretty good. The question is, how do you know if it’s finally time to harvest the sweetcorn? 🤔

I noticed a strange smell coming from one of our raised beds. After a brief investigation, I discovered that the smell was coming from one of our kohlrabi. I'm not sure what happened to it, but something caused it to rot from the inside. When I cut it open, the smell became very intense, and suddenly, flies from all around swarmed toward it. Does anyone have any ideas about what could have caused this?

Current garden status as of the end of June: things have exploded in the last few weeks, and it's starting to get wonderfully out of control, which we absolutely love. There's so much life going on in there, and more and more food for everyone. We also added a drip irrigation system to save water and make better use of it by waterring directly at the base of the plants.

I inspected our blackcurrant and discovered some orange eggs on a few of the leaves. They are located on the underside of the leaves; see picture 1. Additionally, I noticed tiny black insects near some empty eggs; see picture 2. Do you have any idea what these could be? I suspect they might be ladybug eggs and larvae, but I'm not entirely sure. It's also worth mentioning that there are some aphids present on the plant.

I also added broad beans and kidney beans to make the most of the space between the rows. Later in the season, I plan to add a pumpkin as well. Thanks again! 😉

The corn, zucchini, and kidney bean seedlings are thriving in the new mobile greenhouse. We'll soon be able to transplant them into the garden. As for the greenhouse itself, I've made a few improvements to enhance its stability by adding a transverse bar at the back of the shelves. Additionally, I've included two wooden pieces that can be rotated on either side of the window to keep it securely open.

Another project finished in the garden. We have added one more raised bed with a retractable working table. Very handing to work on small jobs like seeding. All the wood material for the build has been up cycled, scavenged pallets and board from the streets near our place, plus leftover from other projects.

Over the past few weeks, I have been working on a compact greenhouse on wheels. It’s almost entirely created from upcycled materials. Our neighbors generously gifted us with some plexiglass he had laying around.
As a result we are able to move the greenhouse depending of the sun‘s position. We have also started some growing some new seedlings, including corn, kidney beans, kohlrabi and radishes.

First year for our raspberry plant. It is a fall bearing type, but we can’t remember exactly which one… We planted it last April. it grew so quickly and gave us fruits from end of July until late October. For a total of 0.64 kg. It was always a nice treat when visiting the garden 😋
A few days ago, we pruned it slightly. I’m wondering how it will develop until end of this year. Hopefully the harvest this year will be as generous or even more 😀

Last year we planted two Zucchini (or courgette 😉), one yellow and the other one classic green. While the yellow didn’t bear fruit (I think too much in the Fig tree’s shadow), the green classic gave us a really good harvest during the summer. It gave us around 6kg, plenty to cook and enjoy 😋

We had a very nice surprise last year when we let a sunflower grow in between our corns and beans. The seed was a remain from the previous year and grew wild to 2,80m high, with a multitude of flowers coming out of the stem. Really proud of that one. Learning: don’t plan for everything, also let things happen 🌻😊

I wasn’t sure if it would actually grow properly, but we managed to get a few ear of corn 🙌🏻 even if they were quite small and were with sparse kernel. Our soil still need more nutrients I think, preparing compost to remedy it for this year 🤞🏻
Anyway we can now enjoy popcorns 🍿😋
