Congrats to the #Python folks for merging the first patches to disable / remove the GIL.
An excellent reminder that making deep-level changes of mature programming environments takes time, patience and a lot of very diligent work by smart and conscientious people.
In this case, I think it's taken just under 20 years. A fact I'll keep in my back pocket for the next time anyone wants to complain about how long major changes take in #Java and the #JVM

Results from using #Github #Copilot so far: Coding - modest improvement in the areas where Copilot is useful (boilerplate, low-level implementation, things I would have used SO for) - perhaps 25% decrease in time spent.
Writing (yes, it has started suggesting in my asciidoc files as well): Zero increase in speed, but an increase in quality - as I look at what it's proposing and think: "Good Lord, I can do better than *that*". 1/

@npub1psd…9sr7 @npub1jc0…sldg One particularly annoying manifestation of this that I've seen is among programming languages hastags: Acolytes of one particular language will frequently tag in another language that they want to snark at (often incorrectly and/or in bad faith).
So, what to do? Reply and risk being "I think you'll find..." guy or stay silent and have the quality of discussion on the topic you actually want to read about degrade due to being swamped by ill-informed partisan sniping?
