Good morning.

I value having a flexible schedule due to owning a business. Yes, there can be a lot of work, but I decide when to do it.

I just recovered data from a Lenovo IdeaPad laptop that suffered damaged from a water spill.
The owner may also want to have the laptop repaired. I looked up replacement motherboards and they are available.
If replacing the motherboard, I recommend upgrading from the original Intel i3 to a replacement motherboard that has the Intel i5. It is only a bit more for cost and likely well worth it.

That he burned out is mostly an assumption on my part. Producing that much software in such a short time seems unnaturally prolific.
He could have just decided to move on. His name could have also been a pseudonym and he may have moved onto other projects using a different name.

Dylan Araps was prolific. There was a time about four years ago where I was looking at all the stuff he had done and it was inspirational.
Though, a little demoralizing when comparing what he'd published with what I had.
Now, with hindsight, we can see that he may have burned out. He could have changed his priorities, though, too.

I did a thermal cleaning and reapplied thermal paste for a HP ProBook 455R G6 laptop.
The heat is designed well and can be taken off with just four screws. It is also separate from the fan, which makes it easier to take off.
Reapplying thermal paste was easy and made a big difference. Fan was running all the time before and now hardly at all after the paste was replaced.

On a Lenovo IdeaPad 3 laptop, I had to disable VMD in the BIOS in order for the m.2 nvme SSD to be visible to Windows.
Odd. I wonder how it got changed. Or perhaps the previous Windows installation had set up RAID and it needed VMD enabled. Not sure.

JB Weld is useful stuff. Using it to adhere a DC jack back in place in a Lenovo IdeaPad after it was busted in and the original bracket destroyed.
Also used the heat of a soldering iron to push a brass anchor back into the plastic of the palm rest on the same laptop.
This laptop "experienced a fall" due to an overly energetic dog coming in contact with the charging cable.
I should be able to fix it. We'll see after letting the JB Weld epoxy cure overnight.

Did some fun things with tech today... and had some frustrations.
The website that was supposed to "go live" today didn't. Works fine in dev server and on "live mode" with a different sub-domain... but will not load the css files when the actual final deployed domain name is switched on.
I am not the programmer, but the sysadmin.
Tested the "live" configuration with a different domain name and that works fine.
Due to testing, I think the PHP code logic that considers the domain name has a show stopping bug in it.
Programmer put some logic that changes how the website works based on what the domain name is. Being clever for different "dev" modes... but I wouldn't have done that. I would have had the result be the same, no matter what the domain name so it is predictable.
I documented my testing and emailed the programmer.
We'll see if my hunch as to the cause was right.

The person who requested Ubuntu 24.04 ended up going with Linux Mint Debian Edition, but not after me trying for an hour to get their Brother MFC-J825DW to work on Ubuntu. Brother's Linux installers are great, but Ubuntu must have done something different in the latest version to break it. Never could get the scanner working in Ubuntu.
The Brother installer (downloaded from their website) worked just fine on Linux Mint Debian Edition. Note that you have to log out and back in again after the installer is run before the scanner will be recognized and work.
Another win for Linux Mint and their LMDE version.

I am securely erasing a hard drive in a computer that a customer recycled with me:
sudo shred -v -n 1 --random-source=/dev/urandom -z /dev/sda
Did a live boot to Linux Mint and then ran that command to overwrite the data on the drive, securely erasing it.

I used CloneZilla a lot yesterday to copy disks. It is one way to get around the limitations of the Windows 11 installer.
I am no fan of Microsoft Windows, but most of my customers still prefer or need it for the work they do. I let people know there's the option of Linux, at least.
If you have an installation of Windows 11 where you have already set up a local account and removed the Microsoft account, you can clone the disk to an image or to another disk (computer).
This allows you to have Windows 11 on a computer with hardware "less" than what the Windows 11 installer requires.
So clonezilla and similar tools are quite useful when repairing and refurbishing computers.

I installed Devuan Linux on an HP EliteBook 850 G1 laptop. Cinnamon desktop environment. One program that I like to have on laptops is Power Statistics, which shows the energy capacity of the laptop battery. It wasn't installed, so:

Seems unlikely, as communicating on the cellular network takes quite a bit of energy. So even if "off" is really "low power mode", I'd like to see some experiments that verify what's happening.
This is one of the reasons why the older phones or few available current models with removable batteries may be valuable.

I use a wifi hotspot instead of a phone. It is off most of the time. But, just like a phone, as soon as I turn it on my location is logged on the cellular network.
Most of the data that's been purchased by third parties and analyzed is gleaned from phone apps (Android or iOS), so if I am not using a mobile phone OS and use a Linux laptop instead with VOIP phone software, the data gathered on me is much less than if I used a regular Android phone.

Just had a customer with critical business data work done only on a laptop. The Intel Optane nvme SSD completely died. Isn't recognized at all. Data lost.
If you have anything important, make an extra copy of it now.
In this case, most of her data was being backed up to a cloud backup service and she had made a recent manual backup. Just the most recent data has been lost... but that was very frustrating for her.

Github is making it difficult for you. They only allow access to these generated downloads if you are logged in.
However, there's a work around with a service that acts as a proxy for those who do not want a Github account. Here's the direct link to the Haveno downloads:

Keeping it secure from accidental loss and your own mistakes: have multiple copies in multiple places of any data that is important to you.
For us, much of that data would be encrypted, but for regular people just having a copy of the data would save them from themselves (encrypted or not).

In that understanding, some "AI" is just a subset of software. The parts that work and are useful can be understood as software with more of the steps automated.
But BigTech companies were having a hard time making more sales with "just software". Something new called "AI" ... but really just a slight variation of the software we already had was used to create investor excitement and hype.
My prediction is that hype will cool as little practical value over just regular software is realized. The people who have bought into the "AI" hype are likely to lose a lot of money if they stay invested.
That's my speculation.

Installed Linux Mint Debian Edition on a Dell Latitude E5540 laptop for a customer. Replaced the slow HDD with an SSD, upgraded from 8GB to 16GB memory.
It's working great. Will extend the usefulness of this laptop for a quite a while.

I'm not a fan of the naming conventions that ASUS uses either. The laptop series is "Predator", so they named the app that controls the lighting, fans and viewing sensor information "PredatorSense".

Been working on a thermal cleaning for an ASUS laptop.
Cleaned all the sticky gunk out of the heat sink and fans. Reapplied thermal paste.
It still revs up loud, but I know it is cooling properly. I'll have to find a way to adjust the fan settings in software, as there isn't a place to do that in the BIOS.

Another way to understand the vast differences in capabilities between BigTech AI and opensource AI, is that BigTech can fake the results and make theirs look much better than it really is.

I do think this is great. Good purchase! Pastured eggs are worth paying Bitcoin for!
However, one thing that I am noticing as I read more of the social notes on nostr is that almost everyone is using mobile phones for wallets and purchases.
As someone with experience with tech privacy, this seems to be a major weak point. Mobile phones are notorious for spying on the actions of the user and reporting them. If you mistakenly give a phone app the ability to record your screen (screenshot), then having your crypto seed phrase just visible on the phone could lead to the loss of whatever is in that wallet.
I just can't see crypto-currency as safe to use while using a device controlled by BigTech (Apple, Google, Microsoft).
Let me know your thoughts on this.

Microsoft OneDrive is such a pain to work with.
In addition to Microsoft being able to look at an analyze your files, the syncing and interface for working with OneDrive is confusing.
I'm helping get a customer's data off one drive and saved locally. There's not enough room on his little HP Stream laptop (only 64GB of storage that is not replaceable or upgradeable).
There's no way to just download all the files from the web interface. Have to jump through hoops to manually set the OneDrive folder to an external drive and then force OneDrive to download all the files to that. But it'll crash if uploading and downloading at the same time and it is making " - Copy" versions of all the files and uploading with no way to stop it that I can see.
So I have to wait.
Please don't use OneDrive. Save yourself some headache.

Probably creating division and angst between family members. I've certainly internalized some of this and it becomes easy to become angry at my parents because of that.
That's not always right, because my parents did work hard.
My take on that is that it was more likely for their hard work to pay off than it is for people now (because of the money supply inflation situation).

It's totally okay for people to work on similar nostr ideas and goals. They may approach it from a different angle, or use different technologies.
As long as they know about each other, they will influence each other. If the code is available to look at, they can see how the other dev did something.
It isn't necessary for them to be buddies or be in tight communication.
Also, people like you (story teller of nostr) can help with that process of discovery by writing and talking about projects so that devs are aware of them.

Most "AI" for helping write code is nearly useless. And a lot of it is straight up fake, for scamming investors.
Insist on running it locally on your own machine, if at all, but you'll probably find that trying to use "AI" is a waste of time.
