**Serif** is the best experience (for most people) for long form reading:
Articles, Book chapters, ...
**Sans** is great for shorter, more chopped up types of reading:
Posts, Wiki entries (with all the links etc...), Descriptions, ....
Many are critiquing Serif as inheritance from the printing press and so on.
Plus, a lot of research has gone into maximizing readability.
Lexend — Change the way the world reads. to name just one example.
But you don't see many customers actually preferring those fonts. Readability isn't everything. Serif has a great vibe going for it and fonts like "Lora" are very much readable enough.

For public communities, what makes the most sense?
1️⃣ Let people **follow** that community
2️⃣ Let people request **membership**
For me, it's 1️⃣. Most people will be lurkers anyway and it's silly to list / count them as members. Others will have varying levels of activity, which you can use for ordered lists and more useful "member" counts anyway.
Memberships make sense for private, closed door kinds of stuff. Open door communities are better of just letting people follow them, for free, and then set prices (or other limits) for letting them publish stuff.

They can do whatever they want, without every client having to be compatible with what they're doing.
They do need a way to communicate what they're doing / asking within the client. That's where I'm stuck now. Any ideas?

Time, money and energy that goes into NIP-05 is not being spent on Relays.
This is true during:
- the onboarding of new users
- use of an app that is constantly verifying DNS stuff in the background
Users need Relays anyway and they literally make most "problems" addendums like NIP-05 pretend to fix complete non-issues.

I used "Profile Lists" before and somehow "Categories" or "Labels" has a weird feel to it for people. Although that's obviously what you're doing: categorizing npubs with labels.

Brought up the same poiny after the WoT panel at Nostriga.
Just replace hyped up terms like WoT with what people actually mean with it: your network.
Given the fact that newcomers don't have a network, their network cannot be a valid entry point. So then you're left with someone else's network, which sucks since it's catered to that individual and not to you or some kind of niche interest you have.
Communities however make it the Admins job to cater to those niche interests and serve as perfect entry points, given their focus and interoperability with other overlapping Communities.
Open question to me is still:
What does it technically mean to **belong** to a community?

You want communities/groups to have (and take responsibility for) their own relay, server and fall back options.
Since anyone is inevitably part of multiple overlapping communities you don't really have the whole single point if failure thing.

Yup, exactly.
That key difference is suddenly makes Smart Clients more centralizing and discriminatory than Smart Rrlays.
Smart Relays can be accessed by anyone that has even the lightest, dumbest device, and they have a ton of competition from other Smart Relays that sovereign profiles can take their business to.

That Suspicious Observers guy and his army of doomculters make it very hard to take these things seriously though.
All the censoring in the replies, zero contact with other researchers in the field, faking interviews with Randall Carlson, misquoting nearly every paper he mentions, the constant mentioning of some of the worst books on the topic (Adam and Eve etc), "Eyes Open, No Fear" lmao 😅.
There's truth to his whole narrative (as with any cult leader for that matter) but holy cow, it comes with a ton of scamming.
I prefer you filtering out the relevant nuggets and mixing it with your own, way more humble and curious, research. Thanks for that 😉.
