Reading "Mao: the unauthorised biography" - there were SO MANY opportunities for Chiang to wipe them out both before and during the Long March, when they were strung out, starving, and with no ammunition but what they carried from the start, which was not much. Re Nationalist China, mass-scale civil war was entirely their baby, mostly against the Anhui- and Zhili-aligned provinces whose leadership had dominated Beiyang China. Fair, but the difference is of degree not of kind.
During its worst years, the USSR had foreign troops occupying parts of its claimed territory up to 1924, and Muslim guerillas in central Asia into the 1930s. Then that long-forgotten war with Afghanistan in '29, and interventions in Western China in the 30s.
Communist China had a standoff with Taiwan, scattered cross-border raids out of northern Myanmar, and troops rotating through Vietnam securing the tungsten mines and Ho Chi Minh's rear areas.
Not WW2 levels of military mobilisation, but certainly not what I'd recognise as peacetime...

IIRC, in the 80s there was a Palestinian terrorist leader hiding in Lebanon so paranoid he would only communicate from public pay-telephones.

1. I have quite seriously looked into getting a real fake birth certificate in a particular poor and corrupt Asian country, just in case the West goes full Cultural Revolution.
I'm still looking at AUD$10k even with in-law connections, and the same again for real fake education history.
Returning ex-Swedes needing a real fake identity would be doing this too, plus paying commercial travel, people smugglers and living expenses. There's no way you can do all that and make a profit on $31K euros. Especially not when you could stay in Sweden and collect nearly as much in welfare for free.
2. Ever Closer Union is a motto of the EU. Ceding sovereignty to Brussels bureaucrats, or even other EU countries with irresponsible short-sighted voters was always a terrible idea.
3. I'm not in touch with anyone in Sweden any more, but they have a saying: "shaking my fist in my pocket".
