@npub1gmx…atcq @npub1hyk…3p33 Absolutely nobody should trust Unity as far as they can throw them.
But what they can't do (mechanically) is go back and edit these game dev's released games. They simply don't have that power/ability. So no 'new stuff' can be snuck in, no gleeful edits or anything.
Most of these games are just smaller indies (not all, Hearthstone exists), and saying 'People should not give these small people money because the big corp is fucking with them' seems...off to me.

Respectfully, I think that saying 'never buy these games that were made with unity' or 'never play them' is the correct take here.
Unity is being shitbags. Absolutely nobody is questioning that. Anyone who is making a game in Unity from this point going forward is going to get a bit of an eye aimed at them.
However, most of these games were made before (WELL before, often) this round of shittiness, and this would harm the indie devs more than anything.

@npub1nxt…055a That was actually the part that affected me the most when I first read it, and has stuck with me sense.
There is no end state. There is no goal. The ever-static now, unchanging always. They don't have a purpose, merely perpetually riding the tiger (I was in love with that metaphor, forgive, I was like 10 when I read it).
But they don't need to because they are never quite letting the balloon touch the ground. The goal is just an ever-eternal this.
It's not cheerful.

@npub1nxt…055a There's a Banks (Culture) quote that comes to mind- 'If there is one thing that empires are not about, it is the efficient use of resources'. We don't know how much effort it takes to actually spy on others. We don't know what resources they have. We do know there are many, many, 'useless' people, without a task to do, in that society
Why not set them chasing their own tails? With automation, the actual needed worker count is low (part of the fear premise of the book). Busywork

@npub1nxt…055a I actually somewhat disagree, though I have held this precise viewpoint previously. I think the concept is that it's not so much 'this is happening to this one person', but instead as 'this is literally happening everywhere and everyone's participating in it'.
Every character in the book is someone in this cycle (most of them, at multiple positions over time). Everyone is waiting for 'someone else' to help them 'fix it', and the passiveness is the perpetuation.
