The next morning, and I have relayed this already, our Shinkansen was cancelled like the two before it, because of a wildlife incident on the track.

This is so rare that the local news showed up with cameras to film the chaos*

* ~150 people waiting to get rebooked.

We tried to outsmart the queue by rebooking ourselves with new tickets, but ran into a snag after 2/3 tickets purchased. Then we got in line as well and the extremely helpful staff sorted us into the next train no problem.
