Yeah, this. Defeating in detail is a military tactic of defeating an army that's split up one piece at a time. (This is why ancient armies, before modern artillery and machineguns, huddled together to the point that a battle with 100,000 troops on each side was on a single field and lasted 1-2 days - any split meant being defeated in detail.)
